If you want to experience the REAL Maldives from a local island, with all it's deserted white beaches that you can roam freely, you should go to Gan! And while you are there, let our top professional dive center take you snorkeling on some of the best dive sites the Maldives has to offer. Gan has miles of deserted milky white beaches, turqouise lagoons, isolated sandbanks, famous surf breaks, coconut plantations, ancient natural forest and a stunning red lake in a forest clearing. The island is linked by bridges to Kadhdhoo and Fonadhoo, providing 16km of discovery from north to south, yet a 3 minute walk takes you from one shore to the other. Aside from the incredible marine life below the surface, Gan provides the total experience for a special and unique connection with the beauty of the Maldives. Location Laamu is an incredibly beautiful atoll south of the capital Male. A 35 minute flight over 5 atolls starts your trip with breathtaking views. This southern part of the Maldives is way less travelled and the island of Gan still enjoys a largely undiscovered status. Staying on a local inhabited island provides a very different, very REAL Maldivian experience, where the locals are eager to welcome explorers. Gan has natural forests, several villages to discover and miles upon miles of deserted milky white beaches. Your resort Honors Residence is a tasteful little boutique hotel of 26 rooms around a pool. You find ooms with the standard of a luxury resort, and economy rooms for those who wants comfort on a budget. The hotel is 2 minutes from the middle of a 4km stretch of the white sandy (and picture perfect) beach. Your Room Rooms come with wooden floors, A/C, king size beds in the lovely deluxe rooms and twin beds in the standard rooms, TV and fridge (You will not find beer in the fridge though, since alcohol is outlawed on all local inhabited islands). The snorkeling sites are picked on a daily basis, depending on the weather and ocean conditions. This is only a selection of the many dive and snorkling sites represented on this particular destination. Laamu Atoll, Gan Island, Maldives Go snorkeling in the Maldives! Itinerary - 5 days & 4 nights - Snorkeling Laamu Atoll Day 1: Arrive Male and take a scenic domestic flight to Kadhdhoo (KDH) airport. The dive center will make your flight booking to Kadhdhoo. You will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel. Cool down in the pool or stroll to the beach until evening time when it is time to check in with the adventure centre to find out the plan for the next days adventure program. Activity starts The day after arrival. Day 2-4 Activity start from After breakfast there will be a boat trip with snorkeling and water Adventure centre activities, lunch on the boat and return mid afternoon. Language If you do not feel like snorkeling, you can join on the daily English excursions, which are planned on a rotating basis from the following list: A trip to one of the thilas, trip by bicycle to the sandbanks, a forest walk, an island/village tour, a hike on the tidal flats, dolphin watching trip and night fishing trips. ... or you could just soak up the sun on the private beach, or chill out in a hammock. It's all up to you! Day 5 Catch the scenic flight back to Male, in time for your international flight out. If you want a longer itinerary, you can add extra days of yoga and excursions upon booking. Transfer Information Unless you have booked a stay in Male or Hulhumale prior to departing to Gan, you only need to walk from the international terminal to the domestic terminal and check in for your domestic flight to Kadhdhoo (KDH). There are multiple flights every day. The Dive Center will book you on the first flight after your arrival, and latest flight prior to your international departure, unless otherwise informed. The Dive center will contact you 2 weeks prior to arrival and provide you with your domestic flight details. The domestic flight is NOT included in the price. Maldives has been conducting censuses since 1911 with the first modern census conducted in 1977. Censuses were conducted every five years since between 1985 and 2000. The 2005 census was delayed to 2006 due to tsunami of 2004, leaving a gap of 8 years between the last two censuses. The 2014 marks the 29th census conducted in the Maldives. Census provides a benchmark data for all demographic, economic and social statistics in the country to the smallest geographic level. Such information is vital for planning and evidence based decision-making. Census also provides a rich source of data for monitoring national and international development goals and initiatives.

Concepts such as vulnerability have emerged as a way of trying to understand people’s risk, despite there being a range of variables that can influence vulnerability and its temporal and spatial dimensions. Drawing from the well-known conceptualisation of vulnerability as a function of exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity, this paper seeks to understand what variables are influencing and shaping vulnerability in Laamu Atoll, the Maldives, and produce a base of knowledge for future vulnerability reduction initiatives. Household questionnaires (n=412) were used on Laamu Atoll to ascertain locals’ perceptions of vulnerability based on livelihood resources, financial security, and climate-change experiences. Results show that peripherality, as a notion that describes the disparities between ‘core’ and ‘peripheral’ islands, is a key factor shaping vulnerability variables on Laamu Atoll. This has prompted an overarching recommendation for peripherality to be considered as a key dimension of vulnerability to climate change and an important consideration for existing and future human development and climate change policy and practice in Small Island Developing States.
