News from the Auburn Town Hall

Auburn Trail Funding Not Coming in 2017 In August we reported in this space the Town of Auburn had applied to the NH Department of Transportation for funding of a potential multi-use path along NH Route 121 from Eaton Hill Road to Shore Drive. Auburn was one of 54 communities from throughout the state who submitted applications totaling approximately $25.5 million for $5.4 million available through the Transportation Alternatives Pro- gram (TAP). The Town has been notified it was ranked 18th of the 54 communities in this competitive grant pro- gram. Although the Auburn scored well in the TAP process, it was not approved for funding in the 2016 grant round. The NHDOT was able to approve 12 projects for funding in this process. The project submitted by Auburn was a multi-use path that would provide a safe connection for walkers, bicyclists, hikers, runners, snowshoers and cross-country skiers from the center of Auburn to various trails leading around the lake and to other parts of the community. As envisioned by Town officials, the multi-use path would not be connected to NH Route 121, but would be separated for the safety of the users of the path. When the Town entered into the Pay- ment In Lieu of Taxes () agreement with Manchester Water Works in 2014, this potential pro- ject being located on MWW property was included as part of the agreement. Initial cost estimates suggest a total project cost of $679,176, with construction in 2018 or 2019. Grant funds would cover 80% of the project costs ($543,340), while the Town would be re- sponsible for the remaining $135,835. Town officials may re-submit the project for consideration in the next round of TAP funding which is anticipated in 2018.

Changing Seats ......

Last month, we accepted the resignation of Jean Worster as a Trustee of the Library. However, we were happy to appoint Jean to serve as an Alternate Library Trustee after Joseph Forest agreed to move from alternate to full Trustee. Jean has been an active member of the Library Trustees as either a Trustee or Alternative Trustee for nearly the past 10 years. Joe more recently began services as an Alternate Trustee, and is looking forward to more active service as Trustee. Joe will also serve as the Treasurer of the Board of Library Trustees.

ADVANCE NOTICE FROM THE TOWN CLERK’S OFFICE

Dates to AVOID doing a motor vehicle transaction this month: February 17 thru 24th

The State is installing a new driver licensing computer system (VISION) during President’s Day weekend. On Friday, February 17 every town in the state will only be able to produce the Town portion of their registra- tions and all those customers will have to go to a DMV substation to complete them, so you can imagine how long the lines at DMV will be that day! The new system is scheduled to be in place and ready for when we reopen on Wednesday, February 22 but it is a major installation and I imagine there may be a few problems, so you may want to call or go to our website to check the status Wednesday, February 22 thru Friday, February 24.

483-2281 www.auburnnh.us Thank you and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that all goes smoothly! Kathleen A. Sylvia, Town Clerk

Pamela Weeks is the Binney Family Curator of the New England Quilt Museum. Author of the book Civil War Quilts and articles on quilt history, she lectures nationally on quilt-making and quilt history. Pam uses quilts to tell stories of the Civil War, women's his- tory, and industrial history. Quilts tell stories, and quilt history is full of myths and misinformation as well as heart-warming tales of ser- vice and tradition. Quilting is NOT just an American art; nearly every world culture that has cold weather uses quilted textiles.

Pam Weeks weaves world history, women’s history, industrial history and just plain wonderful stories into her presentation. Prompted in part by the material culture at hand, Pam may speak about fashion fads, the Colonial Revival, quilt making for Civil War sol- diers, and anything else quilt related she can squeeze in during her presentation.

Participants are invited to bring one quilt for identification and/or story sharing. Open House—3rd Saturday of Every Month—1pm until 4pm Everyone Welcome www.auburnhistorical.org

Massabesic Seniors News

The Massabesic Seniors have started the New Year in a new location, the Longmeadow Church and we welcomed two new members at our first meeting. A number of us joined the knit/ crochet group at the Griffin Library. One of the first things we chose to do was to help with the Longmeadow scarf project. The project was noticed by the Associated Press who interviewed 2 of our members as well as members of the church. The story (as well as our names and pictures) went world- wide. Chris and Pat were surprised when they each received a box of yarn to help with this project. One was from a person in Florida and one was from Texas. We’ve already started turning this yarn to scarves for 2017. One of the other things our group tries to stress is making sure other seniors are not forgotten. We made over 350 visits to shut-ins and nursing homes in 2016. If you have someone who needs a visit give any of the Mas- sabesic Seniors a call. We have a lot of fun things planned for this year. Come join us!

March 7th is town voting and we wanted to mention a warrant article we will be having on the ballot. To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate the sum of Fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000) to purchase a Radar Message Sign for the Auburn Police Department; and to authorize the Board of Select- men to accept Seven thousand, seven hundred and fifty dollars ($7,750) received through New Hampshire Department of Safety, Office of Highway Safety grant, with the balance of $7,750 to be raised by tax- es. We have already secured a grant from New Hampshire Highway Safety for $7,750.00 to cover half of the cost for the new speed trailer. Our current speed trailer is 17 years old, and can no longer hold a battery charge for very long due to advanced age and maintenance issues. With the new year, we are asking for people to update their information with the police department in case of an emergency. Residents are not required to register home alarm systems, but we can enter the information into our computer system in case of an emergency. If you do not have a home alarm but would like us to have contact in- formation in case of an emergency you can also fill out the form. The form can be mailed in, emailed or dropped off at our Safety Complex. Lastly, we wanted to announce the date for our Annual Auburn Police VS. Auburn Fire Silly Chili Cook off and Com- edy night. This year the event will be on April 8th at the Auburn Village School. We will have more details in the March edition of the of the Crier, but wanted you to mark your calendars!!!
