Breed names are those given in Mason (1996). A World Dictionary of Livestock Breeds, Types and Varieties, Fourth Edition. Wallington, UK. Population size is given for years 1999-2004, according to the different sources. 1. Anatolian The Anatolian buffalo has been raised in Turkey for centuries, originating from Indian migration (7th Century), together with the expansion of Islam. Population size: 110 000 Description: Black in colour, long hair, with variation in tail length and frequent white switch. Height at withers of adult male is 138 cm, body weight is 200-500 kg. Height at withers of adult female is 138 cm, body weight is 200-500 kg. Distribution: Concentrated in the Black Sea region, North of Middle Anatolia, Thrace, Hatay, Mus, Kars, Dyarbakir, Afyon, Sivas. Husbandry: In dairy farms, housing differs from region to region. If grazing is available, the three to five buffaloes owned by the family are taken to graze together with the other buffaloes from the village. Mating and calving occur at the pasture. Generally on the ground floor of each house there are barns to keep the buffaloes in winter. The barns have no windows and the doors are tightly closed. Young animals are never taken outdoors in winter in the cold climates. Buffaloes are slaughtered together with cattle. Milking is done by hand except at the two existing research stations. -

(INDIA) - 243122. ooooo SUMMARY Information on performance parameters of riverine breeds of buffaloes has been examined to identify potential for milk, meat and work. Murrah and Nili-Ravi; the large size breeds, have the highest milk production. Selection based on progeny tests on single herd basis has not yielded desired results. No worthwhile field recording programmes have been initiated. Small herd size and poor economic status of the farmers have been the serious limitations in these programmes. Possible ways for undertaking these have been suggested. The need for undertaking research on develop ment of appropriate methodology for sire evaluation under field conditions has been stressed. Use of multiple ovulation and embryo transfer technique to increase selection response has been suggested. Crossing among riverine and river x swamp breeds has resulted in significant improvement in milk yield and reproduction parameters. Breed comparisons of Indian, Pakistani, Egyptian and European breeds need to be made for developing programmes of improvement. It has been recommended that surplus male calves could be used for quality meat production using feed lot technology. INTRODUCTION The domestic or water buffalo (Babalus bubalis) has descended from the arni or wild Indian buffalo, and is widely distributed throughout Southern Asia. Although water buffaloes were depicted in India and Mesopotamia as early as 2,500 BC, their use as domestic animals for milk, meat and draft seems to be comparatively recent. The domestic buffalo can mainly be classified as river and the swamp type. They belong to the same species but have different habitats. -

The Journal of the Natural Science Council published by this Authority provides a medium for the publication of scientific research papers, and "Vidurava", the quarterly science bulletin contains scientific articles of a general nature which is of interest to the public. There is still a wide gap in the availability of reading material on scientific subjects of local interest. One result of this is that science students confine their reading only to their school- notes and to the few available text books which are mostly published abroad. In an attempt to improve this situation, the Working Committee on Science Education Research of the Natural Resources, Energy and Science Authority decided to publish a series of booklets on scientific topics of local interest as supplementary reading material for students and the general public. -

Read Full License Page 1/16 Abstract Semen production data comprising of 55071 ejaculates of 144 bulls from Mehsana buffalo breed was analysed. The traits under study were semen volume, sperm concentration, initial sperm motility, post-thaw sperm motility and number of semen doses per ejaculate. The objective of the present study was to assess the effect of various factors affecting semen production traits and measure the semen production potential of Mehsana buffalo bulls. Data collected of semen production traits were analysed using linear mixed model, including a random effect of bull along with xed effect of various non-genetic factors like farm, ejaculate number, season of birth, period of birth, season of semen collection and period of semen collection. First ejaculation had higher semen volume and sperm concentration resulted in to higher number of semen doses but semen quality was better in second ejaculation. Season of birth of the bull was affecting semen quality traits. As the period of birth advances semen volume increases whereas sperm concentration decreases which reected in persistent production of number of semen doses per ejaculate. -

At over 100 million animals, India has the highest number of water buffalo in the world, however, the species is found across the globe, including Europe where the Mediterranean subspecies is farmed.
