O THE recent changes in the liturgy herald the beginning of a new era in church music, or for some, a return to the Dpast? The changes certainly make those in charge of music for the liturgy take a closer look at its suitability. That is a positive step. There are many who have long complained that the Church has jettisoned a veritable treasure trove of music since the changes brought about by the Second Vatican Council. The recent changes would seem to have provided a braking sys- tem to what has seemed to many to have been a downward slide in stan- dards in church music, and that can only be a good thing. Of course there has been a considerable amount of singable and Liturgically relevant music produced here in Scotland, but there has also been an incursion of material which has the hint of adver- words. T IS not too often that I find myself in the company of the Slovenian Marxist philosopher, Slavoj Žižek; I do not share his solutions for the problems of the modernI world. Not that I dislike his analysis of the world, far from it. Žižek’s notion of a philosophical con- frontation between materialism and ide- alism is one I share deeply, and like Žižek I, too, feel that we have finally reached a point where this confronta- tion is no longer inevitably predicated towards the materialist. Ever since the collapse of the Berlin Wall, he once stated, our world had become enthralled with Francis Fukuyama’s thesis in his The End of History and the Last Men: history had come to an end and the Siamese twins of capitalism and democracy had won. History had not come to an end, of course, and nasty ‘little wars’ rooted in nationalist desire, ethnic frustration and simpler conflicts over resources were there to remind everyone between 1989 and 2001 that ‘the end of history’ had not been reached. If the attack on the Twin Towers had not convinced people that ideas had survived as a potent weapon, then the decade that followed did: a struggle broke out between what some perceived to be the Islamic ideal of society and others that of democracy. In the process, both the ideals of Islam and of democracy were damaged. However, until the great crash of 2007-8, for most in the West the choice was still simple: the consumption soci- ety that we had created in the 1980s was alive and well, or so we thought, and the idea of a politics of ideas, of a soci- ety based on ideals, had withered on the vine. The Church’s call for restraints, for social justice, for an economics based on the person was barely heard, and seemed irrelevant. In the words of a recent TV pro- gramme, however, the party is over. Žižek has noted this, too, and has argued that the time is right for a return of ideas and ideals to fill the vacuum that has come into existence. He notes the A group of US Catholic activists protest argued for what would soon come to be a very Catholic word—and the crucial urges all to live in solidarity, to over- urgency of the need: across Europe, against the actions of US banks and other called a ‘living wage,’ emphasised the foundation of morals: I only have to say come differences of class. Our weekly series on Children’s Liturgy has lesson plans and activity suggestions for use with young people who are on the path to Christ Each week, Catechists will find readings and Psalm responses, complemented by prayer, reflection, FAITH discussion questions, and activities. Please feel free to use them as you wish The lessons are created by Adorer-theologians using the lens of the spirituality of St Maria de Mattias, which also embraces precious blood spirituality FIRST While this is the starting point for the lessons, readers are invited to approach them however the spirit moves you The Church is concerned with the availability and understanding of scripture for children who have their rightful place in the Church. In light of this SCO aims to provide a useful tool in drawing children closer to KIDS the Catholic Faith what we are doing and follow God. two groups. Gospel Repent and believe the Good News. A reading from the holy gospel according to Mark 1:14-20 After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee and told the Good News that comes from God. He said: “The time has come! God’s Kingdom will soon be here. Turn back to God and believe the Good News!” As Jesus was walking along the shore of Lake Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were fishermen and were casting their nets into the lake. Jesus said to them: “Come with me! I will teach you how to bring in people instead of fish.” Right then the two brothers dropped their nets and went with Him. Jesus walked on and soon saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat, mending their nets. At once Jesus asked them to come with Him. They left their father in the boat with the hired workers and went with Him.
