SOURCES OF CAREER INFORMATION FOR CAREER SEEKERS

3.1 Introduction:

Career Information in the form of book, student journal, teacher’s guide, companion website and other valuable tools help palatial career seekers to begin thinking about possible career. There are many sources that provide career information on various aspects of careers. Career information sources are too many and too plenty. They are available in different forms, in different channels and in different media. An attempt is made in the chapter to picturise the career information sources, available for use in the geographical proximity of Haveri District.

3.2 Career Information Sources:

Different definitions of career information, advice and guidance are in use in different countries and among different agencies.

According to Oxford English Dictionary, Career means “An occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress”. According to Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, Career means “The job or series of jobs that you do during your working life, especially if you continue to get better jobs and earn more money”.

Those who are in the process of seeking careers are referred as career seekers who require career information advice and guidance. “Career guidance refers to services and activities intended to assist individuals, of any age and at any point throughout their lives, to make educational, training and occupational choices and to manage their careers. Such services may be found in schools, universities and colleges, in training institutions, in public employment services, in the workplace, in the voluntary or community sector and in the private sector. The activities may take place on an individual or group basis, and may be face-to-face or at a distance (including help lines and web-based services). They include career information

29 provision (in print, ICT-based and other forms), assessment and self-assessment tools, counseling interviews, career education programmes (to help individuals develop their self-awareness, opportunity awareness, and career management skills), taster programmes (to sample options before choosing them), work search programmes, and transition services” (OECD/ The European Community, 2004, P. 10).

As such Career information includes, Job and industry descriptions, Information about employment trends and opportunities, Details about education providers and training, and information about courses, qualifications and the costs involved, Remuneration and financial information, and Computer programmes that assist people seeking information or trying to come to a career-related decision

Career Information helps to focus on what one wants to do for a living. With the help of career Information one can decide his/her career goal. Career information directs and helps to accomplish what one wants to do. It gives details about the possibilities that exist with any career one chooses. It can guide everyone for doing what they want to do in their life rather than just aimlessly drifting from job to job. Career information facilitates better matches between the skills and qualifications, held by job-seekers and those sought by employers. It helps in increasing the efficiency of job searching, so the duration of unemployment is reduced.

Career information enables users to find data relevant to their needs. It helps to make good choices about career goals, and it helps to lay down a plan to achieve these goals. It also focuses on preparing individuals for a stable and linear career.

3.3 Sources of Career Information:

Career information is available in different formats in different channels and in different media. It is available in print as well as non-print media. Newspapers play an important role in the communication of career information. Like the Newspapers, Periodicals, magazines also carry career information quickly and more precisely to the job seekers.

Periodicals are published in a variety of forms. One may divide the periodicals on the basis of their frequency of publication like weekly, fortnightly, quarterly, monthly, Bi-annually and annually.

2) Employment News, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, New-Delhi, Weekly (VI-,1976-).

Employment News was launched, in 1976. The Office of Employment News is headed by a General Manager-cum- Chief Editor.

Employment News Paper is very popular among the youth, those who are seeking jobs in Government Sector. Its prime objective is to provide an effective platform on job vacancies, job oriented training programmes, admission notices relating to job oriented courses and result of recruitment examinations. Newspaper is the oldest and the most widely used medium even today. The purpose for which the newspapers exist is the dissemination of information. In doing so they discharge the obligation to inform the public of latest happenings as and when they happen. Their role is commendable in educating the public and promoting their causes. The newspaper continues to retain its pre-eminent position all over the world even in the face of the onslaughts from television. Basically the need for news and newspaper arises out of the need for information. Newspapers also give much information about career. In the modern living, it is the newspaper which awakens everybody in all areas. Some popular newspapers which provide career information are discussed below.

Samyukta Karnataka a Kannada daily is one of the most popular newspapers in Karnataka. Earlier, Samyukta Karnataka was reporting Employment News of Central and State Governments, Government undertakings, Public Sector and Banking Jobs in India, Staff Selection commission Employment News, UPSC Recruitment, Defense jobs information etc. in a separate supplement named “Samyukta Udyog” which was meant for career information. But it has been stopped now. At present the information about job vacancies is published in the column named “ SK Classifieds” every day. Along with other advertisements, job vacancies in different sectors are published here daily. The information about jobs like salesman, helpers, tailors, workers for MNC companies, teachers, computer operators,

44 accountants, technicians, security guard etc. are given. Usually these jobs are offered to people who have minimum or no qualification.

The Monday supplement “Prajavani Metro” contains a page named “Shikshana Margadarshi”. It contains a column named “Udyogavakash Allali”. It gives details about different jobs and their concerned website names. It also contains an article on different careers, including career opportunities.

The Wednesday supplement “Prajavani Metro” contains a column “Prachalit” which sometimes contains articles on different careers. This is a major kannada language daily newspaper. It carries the supplement named “Namma Mahanagar” for whole week from Sunday to Monday. Every day this supplement contains the column named “VK Classifieds” which provies a sub column named “Recruitment /Job vacancies/other vacancies” which provides

Kannada Prabha is a morning daily News Paper. Daily the column “Prakatanegalu or Mini Jahiratu” brings job advertisements under the sub-columns named “Udyogavakashagalu (Job opportunities) or Bekagiddare(Wanted) or Nera Nemakati” (Direct recuritment).

Career information is covered on every Saturday in its supplement named “Bi-two Coffee”. The supplement contains a column named “Job Dari” (Job News) which gives information about the jobs. It gives job related information like the Number of vacancies, designation of the post, last date to apply and concerned website name.

5. Udaya Vani: Manipal Media Network Ltd, Manipal, (VI-,1971-), www.udayavani.com

Udayavani is a leading Kannada Daily News Paper. This provides information about jobs from Sunday to Monday. The “Udyogavakashagalu” column of classified ads contains job news.

The Tuesday and Wednesday issue of the newspaper contains a column named “Shikshan Margadarshi”. It contains small articles on important topics. These articles have been written for students and job seekers.

6. Vijaya Vani: VRL Group, Bengaluru / Hubballi, (VI-,2011-), web: vijayavani.net

Vijaa Vani is a Kannada-language daily newspaper distributed. It provides job news every day under the column named “Vijaya Vani Classifieds”. The news papers from Sunday to Monday contain job news. It lists jobs related to bakery, MNC company, paper work, training and employment , teachers, computer operators, DTP operators, duty doctors, staff nurse, word boys, carpenter, plumber, security etc.

Wednesday edition contains the column “Vijayavani Appointments” along with “Vijayavani Classifieds”. Both columns provide job news. The column “Vijayavani Classifieds” contains short advertisements about local jobs. The Wednesday supplement “Masti” contains a page named “Udyoga”. This page contains a column named “Kelasa Ide” which lists job vacancies. The same page has “Educare” column which gives answers to the career oriented questions asked by the students. It also contains an article about a career every week.

The Hindu is an English-langauge Indian daily newspaper. It is a national newspaper since 1878.

The job opportunities are published from Sunday to Monday under the title “Classified Mart”. This column has a sub-column named “Situations vacant” which provides information on job opportunities. The Sunday edition carries a separate supplement for classifieds which includes various types of advertisements. The column ‘situations vacant’ lists jobs related to account and finance, call centres, courier, computer, detective/security services, garments etc.

On Wednesday the column “Empower” carries detailed advertisements about recruitments. It gives information about vacancies within the country and abroad. The purpose of this ‘Empower’ column is to provide with information, which brings the vacancy information as well as useful articles.

The Times of India is an -language leading daily Newspaper established in1838. Times of India is the most widely read English newspaper in India.

It includes 8 pages of “Ascent” a supplement which contains career information.

9. The New Indian Express: The Indian Express Group, Delhi, (VI-,1932-), indianexpress.com

The Indian Express is also a leading English newspaper in India. The Monday edition has a supplement named “Education Express” which includes information about different careers and courses.

Career Information is provided under “Job vacancies”.

10. Deccan Herald: The Printers (Mysore) Pvt. Ltd; Bengaluru, (VI-,1948-), www.deccan -herald .ocom

One of the most popular newspapers in the state , started in the year 1948.

From Sunday to Monday the paper publishes the column “classifieds”. It includes advertisements of different types arranged under different sub-headings. The sub-heading “Job Opportunities” lists all kinds of jobs vacant in and outside the country. These consist of jobs related to accounts and finance, jobs in leading MNC companies, simple computer typing jobs, overseas jobs, part-time-jobs, work from home, receptionist/secretary, teachers, professors, architects, medical transcriptionist, data entry operator, female telecallers, jobs of call centres, drivers, marketing executives etc. The “classifieds” column varies in length from half page or full page to four pages.

A separate supplement for “Classifieds” is published on every Sunday which gives advertisements of different jobs. These advertisements have an appeal for wide cross section of readership including average educated layman, homemakers, illiterate persons, college students and scholarly persons.

3.33 Radio:

In rural areas, radios are very familiar. Messages relay from radio stations reach rural youth directly. Career seekers of rural areas are greatly benefitted by the information about career given through radio.

Radio broadcasts career information in a number of programs like Yuva Vani, Sthaliya Prakatanegalu, Udyoga Varte and Mahila Ranga. All India Radio Dharwad

48 broadcasts the Udyoga Varte on every Sunday between 12 – 01 P.M. And it broadcasts Yuva Vani from Monday to Thursday at 8.30 P.M. Occasionally also it announces the employment news.

3.34 Television as a Source of Career Information

In modern days, television has become the popular means of communication.

Following are some of telecast on TV;

i) Yuva Bharat : Yuva-Bharat is a ETV network program for the youth and future opinion makers. It is a “One stop Forum” on career guidance, employment opportunities and counseling for the youth. ii) Job show : India’s first televised Job hunt where we get some of the hottest jobs in the market today. The job show is brought by naukri.com in association with CNBC TV 18, every Saturday at 8.30 P.M. The same programme repeats 11 A.M. and 10.30 P.M. on Sunday.

3.35 Institutional Resource:

1. There is a district employment exchange office at Haveri which provides information on employments. 2. Public Library Even though so many facilities available, the number youth registered in employment cells in very low. As per February 2010, the number of registered youth at District Employment Exchange office, Haveri is 7592 of which 5645 are male and 1947 are female. The number of youth registered at employment exchange bureau of K.U. Dharwad is 114, of which 76 are male and 38 are female. 3. College libraries in the district also provide career information sources. 4. There is also one more Employment Bureau at K.U. Dharwad for Post Graduate students.

3.36 Internet:

Overall internet usage has seen tremendous growth over the last decade. The number of internet users globally rose from million to billions. Internet has become an

49 important source to obtain all types of information like health, education, transport, banking, market, trending, sports, matrimonial, legal, spiritual, entertainment etc including career information. Internet offers many top job sites on career counseling and career information to jobseekers. Some selected websites related to career information are: JobStreet.com, Monster.com, Naukri.com, TimesJobs.com, FresherWorld.com, Career.com, CareerBank.com, etc. These provide details of popular careers including job descriptions, salary statistics, training information, and more. Career development resources help aspiring professionals in their career choices and career changes. A literature search made on Emeralinsight.com and LISTA indicates that a number of studies have been accounted on the use of internet for different purposes. But surprisingly no studies have been reported on the use of Internet for obtaining career information. Hence an effort is made in this article to investigate the awareness and use of Internet for obtaining career information.

Internet is the modern means of communication. It is the advanced means of communication. Internet provides many career related search engines, some of which are as follows.

1. JobStreet.com (www.jobstreet.com)

JobStreet.com is a job portal founded in 1997 at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. According to Forbes it is now Southeast Asia’s largest online employment company. It currently serves about 80000 corporate customers and 11 million jobseekers. The slogan of the firm is “Improving Lives through Better Careers”. The website features a job matching engine name LiNa for jobseekers and a job posting platform named SiVa for employers. The firm also provides other online recruitment products and services.

2. Monster.com (www.monastra.com)

Monster.com is one of the largest job search engines in the world. It was founded in 1999. Its headquarters is in New York, United States. The slogan of the firm is “Your calling is calling” & “Find Better”. It is one of the most visited employment websites in the United States and one of the largest in the world. It one of the most trafficked employment websites in the United States as ranked by Alexa.

Monster is primarily used to help those seeking work to find job openings that match their skill and location.

3. Naukri.com (www.naukri.com)

Naukri.com is an Indian job portal operating in India founded in March 1997. Its headquarters is in Noida. Its slogan is “India’s No.1 Job Site”. It is the brain child of Mr. Sanjeev Bikhchandani and started the company, Info Edge(India). Info Edge is a listed company on the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange of India. Naukri.com is one of the core businesses of Info Edge India. According to comscore, Naukri.com leads the online job market with 70% traffic share. The web has 40 million resumes registered. It publishes a monthly report called Naukri JobSpeak. The report includes hiring activities across different industry sectors, cities and functional areas. The monthly index presents the current picture of the Indian Job Market. It has received many awards and recognitions.

4. TimesJobs.com (www.timesjob.com)

TimesJobs.com is an Indian employment website operating in India and Middle East. It is also a job search engine. It is owned and operated by The Times Group. It is launched in 2004. Its slogan is “ Because you are worth more”. TimesJobs.com is a commercial website. TimesJobs.com has many industry-focused offshoots for corporate jobs.

Career.com is an interactive recruitment advertising site focused on connecting qualified job seekers with employers in the high-tech fields.

7. Careerbank.com (www.careerbank.com)

Career Bank’s career centre offers a variety of available jobs in the industry. This site not only provides an opportunity to find a job on CareerBank but also post a job on it as an employer.

3.4 Conclusion:

The employment news bulletins and newspapers , have proved useful for our young graduates, engineers, scientists and other qualified persons, looking for employment or seeking to improve their prospects. The target groups of these are basically the candidates appearing for competitive exams and interviews. The objective of these periodicals and newspapers is to inform and educate the young people so that they can make an informed decision about their careers.
