Sebert Sporting News Vol 3 Issue 4

After the half-term break we were straight into the swing of sporting events and were very busy with a number of different fixtures and activities.

Wake and Shake

We are really pleased to continue our early morning ‘Wake and Shake’ workouts from 8.15 – 8.45 (your child can sign up at any time for next half term).

And don’t forget the lunchtime clubs as well which cover a variety of different sports and activities. All these are run by our coaches and are free to join. A number of children have already enjoyed this, including Lottie from Year 6, who told us, ”It keeps you healthy and is a great way to ‘wake up’ in the mornings before we start lessons!”

Junior Parkrun

We were grateful for Carolyn and Karen from the local Parkrun organisation who came in to talk to all of Key Stage Two about how easy it is to join in the fun at 10 Acre Field every Sunday morning at 9.00am. They explained how the runs worked and demonstrated the activity as well as interviewing Thomas Attwell who told the children about how far he had run over the weeks. It is a great way to stay healthy and challenge yourself at the same time. Around fifty children had already been involved and many were enthusiastic to explore more.

Football

During half term our Y6 lads played in the Champions League football final against Lawshall. It was a freezing cold morning and for the first ten minutes Lawshall battled hard against a well established Sebert Wood team. Final score was a win for Sebert Wood 6-0 with goals from Justin Clarke, Jayden Murphy and a fabulous header by William Van Holland.

Other team members on the day were Sam Crake (GK) Barnaby Hunt, Thomas Hisscott, Alfie Campbell, Jake Young, William Morel and James Turner who were all thrilled to lift the trophy on behalf of the whole team who have played throughout the group stages. George Betson was not available to play on the day, but was part of the team in the build up to the final.

No Limits

A number of children have taken part in King Edward’s No Limits programme, most recently Megan

Giunchi. M egan told us that she had really enjoyed the six week session which included nutritional advice, fitness and health teaching as well as sporting experience and theory. Run by a number of sport and fitness experts for primary children locally, pupils from a number of schools in the area took part and we will be taking advantage of this super extra-curricular opportunity again in the future. Megan was proud to receive her certificate from Mr Dewhurst in assembly.

U12 Badminton

Mr Brooks took four keen, but relatively inexperienced players to their first tournament representing Sebert Wood. An U12 competition, held at KES, they were pitched against schools with older children but started strongly and in their first set of games ( a match) both Chloe Bugg and Shaya Talebpour won their singles and Asha Chandraraj and Helena Peachey narrowly lost the doubles. The next match involved their only loss with only Shaya winning her singles and the outcome being that Stowupland were worthy winners. The girls came back strongly in their next match with both singles and the doubles games resulting in wins and the outcome against Thomas Gainsborough never in doubt. A non-scoring tie against Westley - who had fielded ineligible players - was closely fought but ended with three narrow losses. Our final match was against Horringer and all games were won in comfortable fashion. We finished as runners up in this tournament ; a really great performance and in which it was a delight to see all the girls work together and support each other.

Badminton Club

We have been fortunate to have a guest Instructor, International sports coach Jo Hughes, providing the children of Year 4 with some specialist tuition at Mr Brooks’ badminton club. She has given her expertise to the club which is an ideal springboard into the Year 5 & 6 Saxons Club held at the Skyliner on Mondays (held 4–5pm every Monday – contact Skyliner on 01284 776300).

Swimming Gala

On Thursday 8th March, eight children from Years 5 and 6 represented the school in a Schools Games U11 swimming gala. There were some strong individual and team swims, with Grace Bullingham finishing first in the freestyle, Harry Barnes third in the freestyle and the girls 4 x 25m Medley finishing first. The results were very close across the heats and Sebert Wood finished in second place overall, narrowly failing to qualify for the finals. A very intense and exciting gala with all participants giving their best. A big well done to all involved!

Gymnastics

On March 12th we took three teams to the Spectrum Gym for a competition. After the Gym Club practise, the children were able to perform both body management and floor exercises for the judges, and the day was full of amazing feats of balance and control. Two teams from Year 3 and 4 competed in the morning, finishing in a credible 4th and 5th place and really enjoyed the experience. Year 5 and 6 had to perform a routine to music, which was ‘All that Jazz’, and it was brilliant to watch! They were so excited to finish in third place and receive a bronze medal. Really well done to all who took part, and special thanks to Hannah Palframan, their coach who has worked so hard with them.

Quicksteps Hockey

We have been busy playing hockey recently, with two tournaments at King Edward School. We entered two teams into the Year 5/6 competition, and the skills displayed show the level of enjoyment from the players. In a 4 by 4 match, team work is essential, and this was reflected in passing and awareness of positioning. A third place finish was pleasing, and the children acquitted themselves well.

Year 3/4 was a chance to try out fairly new skills for most of the players, and conquering fears and nerves was a major part this time. The confidence grew as the games progressed, and it was great to see the enthusiasm and commitment from the children. Well done all! Sebert Sporting News Vol 3 Issue 4

Charlotte Holmes has been awarded the "Jimmy Watts rookie girl of the year award" by Suffolk LTA. She is pictured here receiving the award on March 23rd. Congratulations Charlotte!

Harrison Ridgeon recently competed in Culford Sports & Tennis Mini Red Tournament. He won 4 out of 6 matches against teams from Culford, Sextons Manor and South Lee. He came second and won a silver medal!

Great work on the Tennis. Well done!

Netball Club

Year 3 and 4 have spent the past ten weeks being coached by Tracey Butcher from Jetts Netball Club. They have learnt a lot about the game, and the progress they have made is amazing! This complements the existing Year 6 Club, which is open now for Year 5 children to increase the delivery and continuity of netball at Sebert Wood. Thank you Tracey!

Fit Friday

We enjoyed a wonderful Fit Friday at the end of March, with about 250 cycles on site! Helen Ballam and Jane Banns spent the day with us, organising a course through the trees, round obstacles, over log rolls and through slalom gates. The children enjoyed the challenge, and then had speed relays followed by a ‘slow bike race’. A brilliant day which involved children from Year 1 through to Year 6. Our thanks to Helen and Jane, who had as much fun as the children!

And Finally..... Our thanks, as usual, go to Sports Leaders, Sports Mentors and Sebert Wood Staff. We would also like to thank parents for their dedicated support in transporting the children to events and encouraging them from the sidelines – often in

very cold and inclement conditions!
