Fifth Field Watersheds OP230 A watershed is a drainage area surrounding a network of streams and their tributaries, including water above (surface water) and below (groundwater) the earth’s surface. Gravity and topography are significant factors in the determination of a watershed as these components determine how and where water will flow. Water channels, flowing downhill, join with other water channels to create a common drainage network. These networks are watersheds and their smaller divisions are managed by the help of local watershed councils.
JACKSON Watershed councils are tax exempt organizations required to represent stakeholders located within a particular watershed. CREEK The Councils bring local stakeholders together to work toward watershed protection and restoration through collaborative programs, outreach and education. Watershed programs focus on decreasing pesticides, soil erosion mitigation, keeping livestock away from the streams and, predominantly in urban areas, managing the impacts of storm water runoff. Whether rural or urban, Jackson County watershed councils also work on wetland management, riparian management, irrigation management, erosion and sediment control, fertility and pest management and animal management as well as fish passage issues and restoration of habitat.
