Annually Mount Mercy University hosts a variety of music workshops, continuing education opportunities and festivals. Review this list and discover new ways you can help your students excel musically.

Summer Academy | Acquire new skills and techniques to help make your classroom a place where students feel empowered to engage with and grow in their musical talents. Previous sessions have focused on the Orff approach to active music making and music literacy. Earn graduate and/or staff development credit through Grant Wood AEA during our summer academy.

All-State Choral Workshop | Give your high school students a head start on their Iowa All-State Choral Repertoire. Led by respected clinicians who offer exceptional feedback and guidance, our workshop will help your students begin to master the pitch, rhythm and text for each piece. Our workshops are one of the best ways to familiarize your students with these difficult pieces and help them feel confident as they prepare for their auditions.

Chamber Choir Festival | Looking to take your high school chamber choir or larger choral ensembles to the next level? Use our festival to challenge them with high-quality madrigal and chamber music in a fun and musically rewarding atmosphere. Sessions with guest clinicians who provide your groups with professional feedback and all music are provided as part of the festival.

Cedar Brass Festival | Since 2003, the two-week Cedar Brass Festival has been equipping students with new skills through intensive rehearsal and sectional coaching.

Five Seasons Chamber Music Festival | World-class faculty will lead the chamber ensembles which include string and piano; harp, flute and woodwinds; and brass. The week-long festival culminates in three gala concerts.

Five Seasons String Quartet Workshop | Just a week before IHSMA Solo/Ensemble Contest, send your best String Quartet (or two) to Mount Mercy for an afternoon of clinics, professional critique and individual coaching from our resident Five Season Chamber Festival faculty.

39ICDA / ICDASymposium Symposium 2013 2013/ 39 40 / ICDA Symposium 2013 I O W A Composition Commission CHORAL In 2000, the Iowa Choral Directors Association, Inc. (ICDA) and the Iowa Composers DIRECTORS Forum (ICF) began a collaboration to support the composition of new choral music for Iowa association, inc. Choirs. This Collaboration has resulted in the commissioning of nine pieces, all of which have received their premiers at the ICDA Summer Symposium, and which have been made available to ICDA members for their use, without charge, for one year from the date of the premier. The commissioned works are the result of a composition commissioning contest, in which interested composers submit samples of their choral works, along with a text they propose to set. A panel of two representatives from each of the sponsoring organizations selects a winner, who is then commissioned to write a piece which is performed at both the ICDA convention and the ICF festival. The following composers and pieces have been the result of the commissioning process:

Diane Mahoney is Music Director at SS John and Paul Catholic Church in Burlington, Iowa, which includes directing choirs for children and adults. Her choirs frequently sing her music (whether they want to or not)! She accompanies for the Burlington Notre Dame Schools, and substitute teaches in music there and at the Burlington Public Schools.

As co-director of the Shoquoquon Children’s Choir, an honor choir in Burlington for students in Grades 4 through 6, she has recently enjoyed composing songs for them to perform. Sho- quoquon Children’s Choir was started by Deb and Roger Hatteberg 25 years ago, and Deb and Diane are now the co-directors. Diane also sings with the Bel Canto Chorale in Burlington who has performed a few of her songs. Diane and her husband Stan have four adult children, whose poems she has cleverly kept since their grade school days, for an occasion just like this!

Entrants should be willing to travel to the University of Northern Iowa in the late spring of 2015 to hear their piece performed if selected for an award. The ICF will make every effort to have winning compositions performed at an ICF event, but we cannot guarantee performances of pieces by large ensembles. Students can enter a composition into one of four categories based on their grade equivalent: Category 1: 5th grade and younger; Category 2: 6th–8th grade; Category 3: 9th-12th grade; or Category 4: undergraduate college student.

The ICF reserves the right to declare no winners in a category if the judges determine there are no entries of sufficient quality. To sponsor a student composer, please submit a full score of their work with all parts clearly shown and no more than 2 parts on a staff. Scores should follow standard ensemble layout practices, including proper instrumental order and transposition. Scores should be clearly labeled with the title of the composition and the grade level of the student at the time of submission. All marks referring to the identity of the composer should be removed. ICDA Symposium 2013 / 55 Save the Date for the 2014 ICDA Symposium Hosted by Michael Reese July 21-25, 2014 NIACC, Mason City It is with great pleasure and anticipation that I present a sneak-peak at the 2014 ICDA Summer Symposium! The symposium will not only provide clinicians to educate the individual teacher, but will further provide a platform for sharing ideas and techniques that WE use in our own classrooms. We will focus on collaboration as a method to increase productivity in the classroom and also to create a renewed spark for our own intellect. Sometimes we may feel as if we are educating on an island or in a vacuum, but by listening to professionals in music education and then sharing our successes and concerns, we will quickly learn that we are all in this TOGETHER! My ultimate goal is to strengthen our membership by increasing our knowledge of each other... not just K-6th or 7th-12th, but K THROUGH 12th and beyond! Some of the offerings will include a “meet and greet” and discussion on musical theatre with Tony nominated song writers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Performing concert spirituals and a reading session will be offered by composer Stacey Gibbs (he will also provide a NEW SETTING specifically for our symposium!). Jonathan Erwin, an expert in Choice Theory, will provide multiple sessions ranging from ways to empower your students by meeting emotional needs, to staying calm in stressful situations. Other Music Education/Advocacy clinicians will include: Karl Chang; Scott Sandersfeld; Jesse Upah; Laura Lane; Iowa’s own Kelly Truax, Heath Weber, David Law, Alan Greiner, and more to come! Ann Fennell, from the University of Iowa, will educate us on the Lessac Vocal Method for Voice Care/Development and graduate students from the Iowa Voice/Speech Clinic will be present to offer small group sessions on resonant voice production and vocal care. Worship sessions and a worship event will be led by worship leader, recording artist, and former Iowans, Jenn Petersen and her husband Branden (Collin Creek Community Church, Dallas). There will also be sessions presented on Music Technology and Music Literacy. Concerts will include: Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, joined by former Iowan and National Broadway Touring soloist, Whitney Bashor; Crystal Children’s Choir (San Francisco); the Mirandola Ensemble (Minneapolis); Nova Singers (Galesburg); and Breath of Soul (Nashville), featuring former Iowan, Jesse Upah. We will also feature the All-State Jazz Choir, Director’s Chorus, Retired Choir, Commissioned Work, OPUS and All-State reading sessions (featuring the conductor of the 2014 All-State Choir), exhibits, and many Reading Sessions. The “Dynamic Duo” of Jennifer Wagner and Tom Gerking return for ONE MORE SUMMER to co-coordinate exceptional Social Events. That alone is something you can’t miss! Mark the dates July 21st - 25th, 2014, on your calendar NOW! I know you will be educated, enveloped, and entertained. I am looking forward to seeing you at the 2014 ICDA Summer Symposium!
