SHORT SYNOPSIS (LOGLINE)

A story of an awakening of an adolescent’s moral consciousness and the discovery of sexuality, depicted on the background of a murder that stuns the population of a small Spanish post-civil-war village and brings to light all of its long and well hidden secrets.

SYNOPSIS

11 year old Andreu, witnesses the last few seconds in the lives of a little boy and his father. The boy’s last word is “Pitorliua”- the name of a mysterious ghost living in the cave in the woods. The local police, investigating the bodies that lie below the cliff in the woods, initially label it an accident but soon change their minds to murder. No-one but Andreu’s father Farriol is pointed at as the main suspect. Andreu’s world begins to fall apart. His beloved father and hero disappears to hide from the police and his exhausted mother is forced to work extra hours in a run-down factory just so they can survive. To keep him safe, Andreu is taken to live on a farm in the country where his grandmother and her daughters- widows of the war- find their own way to make it through tough times with his cousins. Here he is faced with the grim realities of a post-war country for the first time. To cope with his feelings of fear and loss, he creates a fantasy world, made up of his menagerie of birds, local myths and legends and a risky but appealing friendship with a contagious boy living with other similarly infected people in a convent, isolated of the rest of the village. Yet Andreu cannot escape reality for long. When the police make it clear they are not searching for another suspects, he decides to find the real killer to clear the name of his father. As he digs into the town’s secrets he discovers to his horror, how “Pitorliua” and other myths he believed to be only stories, are in fact true, and that they involve the people he loves most. He learns that among the lies and fallen morals caused by war and poverty, no-one remains blameless. Andreu’s father is eventually captured, found guilty and executed for the murders. Following this, Andreu is offered an opportunity to start a new life, when the richest family in town offer to take him in and pay for his education. He might not know how much this offer is related to his father and how it is actually a reward for what his father did for the family but he realizes then, that growing up sometimes means starting a new leaving your family and past behind.
