Teachers and students had to face hard times in the 1930s because of the economic crisis, many children were malnourished. After the second world war the city Eisenerz had an uprising as well as the school. Many people worked on the Erzberg and brought their families to the little town. As a result of the consistent immigration, more and more children visited the school in Eisenerz. To compensate the higher numbers of students, a second school was built – Now there were two primary schools in the centre of Eisenerz - one for the boys and one for the girls. A third one, situated in a district of Eisenerz, called Muenichtal, was attended by girls and boys. In the 1980 the other schools had to be closed, one after the other, that time caused by the very fast declining number of inhabitants of our town and this school remained as the only primary school for the children of Eisenerz and the surroundings. Also, students from Radmer – a little village near Eisenerz - and boys and girls from Vordernberg are visiting our school today. 1.2 Describe the strategy, ambitions, objectives and work in the school in regard to safety. It must be a higher level of safety than average for a school in the country or region. Identity: Our primary school is located in a small town in the mountains. Surrounded by mountains, the ambience of our school is naturally influenced by the certain environment. So sports is basically a very important element for the school and the pupils. © 2016 International Safe Schools. All logos are the property of International Safe Schools. Objectives: The guiding principle of our school “Fit, Healthy and Successful through Live” can be found all over our learning situations. Our dedicated team of teachers is establishing a base for lifelong learning. Values: At the same time respect and tolerance are our highest values. We support the development of social competences in the classrooms as well as through group activities. As a team, we support each other and work together to find the best solutions. Competencies and resources: With modern tuition methods we are making an effort to support all competences and skills of our pupils. Doing so, our focus is still on the development of social competences during school life and all school activities. The contact with parents is very important to us, only then a collaboration of high quality is achievable. So we keep parents, but as well as other external partners as close as possible. Strategies and objectives in regard to safety: If you want to be successful, you have to keep an eye on your health. Sport activities also depend on a healthy body and mind. So our school takes care on this subjects. 1.3 How are the mayor (or similar function of the school) and the executive committee involved? The school is supported by the mayoress Christine Holzweber and the municipality of Eisenerz wherever necessary – and possible – covering financial and staff support. The school principal Andrea Hambammer is supported by engaged teachers, who fulfil the necessary operational functions and work. The Safety Project was created in cooperation with ARGE Verkehrserziehung and AUVA as well as Safe Kids Austria (GROSSE SCHUETZEN KLEINE) which has also worked together with the school for several projects. Besides the normal everyday risks of injury – which concern not only the school, but also the homes of the children – there are other risks depending on the sportive activities, like running, skiing, skating and many other things carried out in our school. In September 2016 the children of the 3rd and 4th grade take part in the traffic safety project of Safe Kids Austria. In a 4-hour workshop, employees of Safe Kids Austria worked with children on topics such as road safety, cycling and the right equipment. Previously, the children were asked to complete a road safety questionnaire. In a workshop, the following topics are addressed: “Are accidents coincidences?”, distractions, safety equipment (cycling helmet, roadworthy bicycle, protective equipment), child car seats, seat belts, traffic signs and rules. On another project day, the pupils “take-to-the-streets” along with the police to observe road users and determine whether they behave correctly (avoiding distractions, wearing seat belts, obeying speed limits, wearing helmets while cycling). In addition, people using transportation are stopped and, if they have displayed incorrect behaviour, the children and police inform them of the potential dangers and ask them to change their behaviour. Afterwards the children were asked again to complete the same road safety questionnaire. As in the picture below, you can see the results of the evaluation: © 2016 International Safe Schools. Although the figures clearly show that the pupils already achieved only a few points in the pre-test for the area cycling. Though there is a significant increase in the post-test, the level of knowledge in this area is low. In the area “Road Signs” the pupils already knew a lot in the pre-test, and were able to further expand their knowledge in the post-test. But the numbers were not significant anymore. According to the figures, pupils increased in all 5 areas, in 4 of them significantly. Conclusion: By taking part in the workshop, observing the traffic, and making traffic stops together with the police, the children can see how important it is to observe the rules and behave correctly in traffic to assure the safety of the whole population. To sustain this level of knowledge about appropriate behaviour in traffic, the topic will be repeatedly addressed and discussed.
