Cette double appartenance, bien que peu évidente à gérer au début sans pour autant me rendre schizo (à Bruxelles: tiens vlà la Liégeoise! A Liège: tiens vlà la Bruxelloise!...) n’a rendu ce travail que plus riche en expériences de vie et professionnelles, en rencontres intéressantes et surprenantes, bref, en tout! Mais le risque d’oublier l’un ou l’autre se voit doublé… Tout d’abord, je voudrais remercier le Professeur Jean-Marie Bouquegneau qui m’a accueillie dans son labo au tout début et qui m’a, de ce fait, permis d’accéder aux joies (et aux peines parfois) de la recherche en océanologie. Ensuite, c’est avec plaisir que je remercie ceux qui sont derrière cette thèse depuis sa genèse, mes promoteur et co-promoteur, le Professeur Patrick Dauby et le Dr Claude DeBroyer. Claude, merci de m’avoir ouvert les portes de l’Antarctique, ce furent deux expériences magnifiques qui a elles seules peuvent effacer sans peine les moins bons côtés d’une thèse et la sueur qu’elle a fait couler sur mon front, sincèrement merci !! Ce travail a reçu l’appui financier du Fond de la Recherche pour l’Industrie et l’Agriculture (FRIA) et des Services Fédéraux pour les affaires Scientifiques Techniques et Culturelles (SSTC, Programme antarctique, phases IV et V) OBJECTIVES Objectives The purpose of this work is to assess the ecological roles of amphipod crustaceans in the Southern Ocean and, more particularly, on the continental shelf of the Weddell Sea and the Antarctic Peninsula. Within this ecological study, focus has been made on the significance of amphipods in Antarctic trophodynamics through: - A systematic determination of gut content composition. The amphipods have been chosen because they cover an extremely wide trophic spectrum; from sampling gathering suspension-feeders such as Ampelisca richardsoni to micropredators such as Epimeria similis, as well as scavengers such as Waldeckia obesa. The species considered in this work are representative of the Antarctic continental shelf amphipod community. 1 Objectives - An scan examination of the morphology of the mouthparts and especially of the mandibles in several species, representative of different trophic types. - A systematic analysis of stable isotope ratios -δ13C and δ15N - in all the sampled species in order to estimate and compare their respective trophic position. The isotopic ratios have also been measured in specimens of other benthic groups to investigate the trophic relationships built by amphipods in the Antarctic benthic food web. - The determination of the fatty acid composition in several species of amphipods to delineate the trophic links between amphipods and the rest of benthos. This multidisciplinary approach allows tackling the complex problem of amphipod trophic role in the Southern Ocean from different angles, each adding a particular aspect to overall food web picture. The general introduction and results are presented according to the following framework: Chapter 1: A general introduction puts the scientific question in its global context by summarizing information about the studied ecosystem: the Southern Ocean and the significance of amphipods in Antarctic benthic communities. The second part of this introduction is devoted to the description of the different techniques that have been used to assess benthic amphipod ecological role in Antarctic trophodynamics. Some of the following chapters have already been published in peer-review journals or submitted. 2 Objectives Chapter 2: “A stable isotope approach to the Eastern Weddell Sea trophic web: focus on benthic amphipods”, Polar Biology (2002) 25: 280-287. Accepted 23 August 2013 Three species of marine Amphipoda, Peramphithoe africana, Varohios serratus and Ceradocus isimangaliso, are described as new to science and an additional 13 species are recorded from South Africa for the first time. Twelve of these new records originate from collecting expeditions to Sodwana Bay in northern KwaZulu-Natal, while one is an introduced species newly recorded from Simon’s Town Harbour. In addition, we collate all additions and revisions to the regional amphipod fauna that have taken place since the last major monographs of each group and produce a comprehensive, updated faunal list for the region. A total of 483 amphipod species are currently recognized from continental South Africa and its Exclusive Economic Zone . Of these, 35 are restricted to freshwater habitats, seven are terrestrial forms, and the remainder either marine or estuarine. The fauna includes 117 members of the suborder Corophiidea, 260 of the suborder Gammaridea, 105 of the suborder Hyperiidea and a single described representative of the suborder Ingolfiellidea.

A survey of breeding birds during the brooding stage was carried out from February to April 2000 in the southern portion of Deception Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica. This island supports two Sites of Special Scien- tific Interest (SSSI Nos. 21 and 27). Nine species were found breeding in the study area: Chinstrap Penguin Pygoscelis antarctica (an estimated 6820 breeding pairs at two colonies surveyed), Pintado or Cape Petrel Daption capense (36), Wilson’s Storm Petrel Oceanites oceanicus (3), Antarctic Cormorant Phalacrocorax atriceps bransfieldensis (9), Greater Sheathbill Chionis alba (2), Subantarctic Skua Catharacta antarctica (4), South Polar Skua C. maccormicki (11), Kelp Gull Larus dominicanus (49) and Antarctic Tern Sterna vittata (5). Due to the increasing tourist activity at Deception Island, better information on the location and size of breeding populations is a particular requirement if effective precautionary conservation actions are to be taken.
