Island Manager Comments

Greetings Everyone: There is some sad news to report today. We heard on Tuesday that Vic Richards, long time Island Manager and our first Town Manager passed away on Monday afternoon. Vic suffered a heart attack around the 1st of July and never regained consciousness. A memorial service will be held at 9:30 AM on Monday, July 26, at Wagon Hill Farm in Durham N.H. Condolences can be sent to: Mrs. Janet Richards 7 Tuckers Trail Stratham, New Hampshire 03885

Taxes, Taxes, Taxes: We still have $42,156.00 in outstanding taxes for 2004. If you haven’t paid your taxes yet, you have until August 20th when we will be sending lien notices to everyone who is delinquent.

Fire Works: We continue to collect donations for the Fire Works held on the 4th. We are now only $420.00 short so if you haven’t donated and you would like to, we will happily accept your contribution.

Meetings: There will be a BoS /EC meeting on Saturday July 24th, at 9:00AM at the Community Center. The Yacht Club Policy and the Golf Policy will be reviewed at this meeting. This meeting is open to all Islanders. Lake Level: There has been some concern of late about the lake level that has resulted in reduced beach size and erosion at some shore front locations. I have heard some people are saying that the lake level will be raised anywhere from 7 to 12 inches more in August. I don’t believe this is the case. The lake level chart available on our web site shows a steady decline in the level. I have picked a few dates for comparison:

Difference June 20, 2003 –265.20 ft June 20, 2004 –266.08 ft .88 ft or 10.5 inches higher July 20, 2003 –264.87 ft July 20, 2004 –265.49 .62 ft or 7.4 inches higher

This data indicates that the lake level is presently about 7 inches above where it was at the same time last year. This doesn’t help the size of the beaches or the erosion but I didn’t want Islanders to think the level was going to be raised again. The lake level will more than likely be about 7 inches higher than it was last year.

Sebago Lake Poker Party: The Windham Rotary is sponsoring a Sebago Lake Poker Party for boaters on Sebago Lake on August 7th. It sounds something like a scavenger hunt where boaters find cards around the lake. I mention this because there could be a number of boats around the Island looking for clues and cards resulting in an increase in boat traffic. Please be careful on the water. If you would like more information on this activity go to www.sebagolakepokerparty.com.

Police Activity: Again, we had a relatively quiet week on the Island. Keep up the good work.

Have a great weekend and help us make it a safe week for everyone! Wayne

Page 5 With deepest sympathy to the Family of Vic Richards

Frye Islanders,

This is just to let you know that former Island Manager Vic Richards died last Monday afternoon, July 19th, in New Hampshire. Vic never regained consciousness after suffering a heart attack about three weeks ago.

His memorial service will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 26, at Wagon Hill Farm in Durham, NH. Additional details will appear in the Portland Press Herald.

His wife, Janet, is looking forward to meeting Frye Islanders at the memorial service. She commented that Frye Island was a very large part of Vic's life (and he was certainly an important figure in our Island's history.)

If you would like to send a note of condolence, the address is:

Ferry News

We were saddened to hear that Captain Ed Lefebure died on July 13th, 2004 from complications of a very rare cancer. Ed was Captain for the ferry in the 1980’s when Captain Kevin was just beginning here. His stories and inspiring wisdom were always gladly shared with those who cared to listen and he had the knack of making everyone around him feel valued and comfortable. We will miss Captain Ed.

There have been comments made about the ferry being backed up. Fact: With little exception, there are 2 boats running 12+ hours each day. Fact: Because of the building and the fact that heavy equipment / oversized loads are allowed 8:00 am –2:00 pm Monday thru Thursday during high season, we are inundated with large to massive construction vehicles and heavy equipment. These vehicles are not only extremely large but heavy, meaning that we can only move a set number of them at one time. These vehicles take up more space on the access road and boat and make loading and traveling much slower. Fact: The island is in desperate need of another boat and place to dock it, if for no other reason than to keep things moving in the event one boat should break down, which could happen given the excessive use in place now and extra strain on engines pushing so much weight. We have hauled 9,784 vehicles as of 7/19 and for the year to date 28,180 vehicles. That is almost what we hauled for the whole month of June (9,986) and more than Casco Bay Lines hauls on their 12 car ferry in one year!! (around 20,000 –25,000 cars)

Page 6 The ferry crews and boats are working hard to provide safe and efficient service, safety being paramount so pleas be patient. Waiting is a part of life and a huge part of any ferry system nation wide. We actually had an islander get out of his car and yell at a Captain to (“get these boats moving!”) while we were in the middle of a shift change. Rude behavior will not move boats any quicker and only serves to make an upset and distracted Captain at the helm of your boat! This island is extremely lucky to have captains who run in almost anything and though the schedule was revised to accommodate a few late night arrivals, it would be a wise idea for late night people to have a “plan B” in place that does not involve the ferry, i.e.: motel, etc. The State of Maine will not allow us to light buoys in the channel making travel in fog dangerous. There may come a night when the boats could be grounded due to fog or heavy wind / waves etc., so an alternative to ferry travel is a good idea. We do not want to put you, your family, or our crews in danger.

Have a great week! The Ferry Crew

My name is Brian Ryerson. I am currently a mate on board the Frye Island Ferry System, working towards becoming a captain for next year’s season.

I was born and raised in Lewiston, Maine. I’m currently living in Bridgton and am very happily married to my wonderful wife Babs. I went to high school in Lewiston then joined the military. I served some time in the Gulf War and took two years of college in Denver, Colorado. I lived in England, UK for the time that I was enlisted. After I got out I went to live in Montreal. Then after two years in Montreal, I decided that there is no place better to live than right here in Maine.

My hobbies include sailing, boating, flying (when I get the chance), and most outdoor activities. I love being near the water. My best interest however, I can’t say hobby because it’s an expensive interest, is racing. I race a Monte Carlo in strictly street stock

Page 7 races. It’s a lot of fun and frustration. No wins yet, but I am always trying to put people in my rear view mirror on the track.

I hope you all have a great season and hope to see you on the ferry.

My name is Katrina, but a lot of people call me Tia. My hobbies include web design, shaving dogs, and cooking. I like funny movies, all sorts of music, going to beaches, and Disney movies. I’m expecting a little girl in November. Her name is Brooklyn Mae. I live in Raymond and went to Gray-New Gloucester High School.

Page 10 Our Thanks to the Residents of Frye Island Thank you for the bench

On January 9, 2004, our 16 year old son, Michael (and his friend Patrick) were killed by a drunk driver going the wrong way on Route 128 in Manchester-by the Sea, Massachusetts

It is with a heartfelt Thank You that we would like to extend to all of the Frye Island residents who contributed to the purchase and installation of the beautiful bench placed in the Family Park in memory of Michael.

Also, we’d like to thank John & Laura Crosby for facilitating this effort on our behalf and to Bruce and Teresa Lane for the beautiful craftsmanship of the granite bench. Our family is overwhelmed by your generosity, caring words and the support we have received during this difficult time.

Michael was a beautiful person. He loved his family, his school and his church. He was kind, helpful, hardworking, quiet and had a wonderful sense of humor. Michael loved Frye Island and couldn’t wait to get here each weekend to help build our home here on the island side by side with his Dad, his Uncles and Grandfather. We are heartbroken over the loss of our precious son and all of our dreams we had for him that will never be.

Thank you the Town of Frye Island for caring so much, we are ever so grateful for this beautiful memorial.

A new star shines in the sky –Love lives on forever. Sincerely, The Heitz Family
