Promovido pela Sociedade Entomológica do Brasil (SEB) e realizado pela Embrapa e Universidade Estadual de Londrina, o evento trouxe como tema principal “Controle Biológico: da academia ao campo, rumo à sustentabilidade”. O evento contou com a presença de aproximadamente 800 participantes entre pesquisadores, professores, profissionais da área, consultores, produtores, estudantes de graduação e pós-graduação. Com uma programação extensa, o Simpósio foi composto por palestras, mesas-redondas, apresentações de trabalhos na forma pôster, além do concurso de estudantes que premiou os melhores trabalhos apresentados no evento e também o Cobiquiz (jogo de perguntas e respostas voltadas ao controle biológico de insetos pragas e doenças). Os participantes tiveram a oportunidade de trocar informações com os diversos profissionais que ministraram as palestras e com colegas que trabalham com agentes de controle biológico de pragas e doenças no Brasil e em outras partes do mundo. Foram apresentados 450 resumos de trabalhos em formato poster, abordando 11 áreas temáticas. Estes resumos estão publicaos neste documento. Mais uma vez agradecemos a todos os participantes, patrocinadores, palestrantes e comissão organizadora, que não mediram esforços e dedicação para que esta edição fosse um sucesso. It is widely distributed in northeast Asia. A novel granulovirus, designated as Matsumuraeses phaseoli granulovirus (MaphGV), was isolated from pathogenic M. phaseoli larvae that dwell in rolled leaves of Astragalus membranaceus, a Chinese medicinal herb. In this study, using next-generation sequencing, we report the complete genome of MaphGV. MaphGV genome comprises a double-stranded DNA of 116,875 bp, with 37.18% GC content.

E-mail:[email protected] ABSTRACT: The caatinga, a thorn-shrub succulent savannah, is located in Northeastern Brazil and characterized by a short and irregular rainy season and a severe dry season. Insects are only abundant during the rainy months, displaying a strong seasonal pat- tern. Here we present data from a yearlong Sphingidae survey undertaken in the reserve Estação Ecológica do Seridó, located in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Hawkmoths were collected once a month during two subsequent new moon nights, between 18.00h and 05.00h, attracted with a 160-watt mercury vapor light. A total of 593 specimens belonging to 20 species and 14 genera were col- lected. Neogene dynaeus, Callionima grisescens, and Hyles euphorbiarum were the most abundant species, together comprising up to 82.2% of the total number of specimens collected. These frequent species are residents of the caatinga of Rio Grande do Norte. The rare Sphingidae in this study, Pseudosphinx tetrio, Isognathus australis, and Cocytius antaeus, are migratory species for the caatinga.

Dahmer3, Celso Omoto4 & Oderlei Bernardi1* Spodoptera frugiperda is one of the main pests of maize and cotton in Brazil and has increased its occurrence on soybean. Field‑evolved resistance of this species to Cry1 Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) proteins expressed in maize has been characterized in Brazil, Argentina, Puerto Rico and southeastern U.S. Here, we conducted studies to evaluate the survival and development of S. frugiperda strains that are susceptible, selected for resistance to Bt‑maize single (Cry1F) or pyramided (Cry1F/Cry1A.105/ Cry2Ab2) events and F­ 1 hybrids of the selected and susceptible strains (heterozygotes) on DAS‑ 444Ø6‑6 × DAS‑81419‑2 soybean with tolerance to 2,4‑d, glyphosate and ammonium glufosinate herbicides (event DAS‑444Ø6‑6) and insect‑resistant due to expression of Cry1Ac and Cry1F Bt proteins (event DAS‑81419‑2). Susceptible insects of S. frugiperda did not survive on Cry1Ac/Cry1F‑ soybean. However, homozygous‑resistant and heterozygous insects were able to survive and emerge as fertile adults when fed on Cry1Ac/Cry1F‑soybean, suggesting that the resistance is partially recessive. Life history studies revealed that homozygous‑resistant insects had similar development, reproductive performance, net reproductive rate, intrinsic and fnite rates of population increase on Cry1Ac/Cry1F‑soybean and non‑Bt soybean. In contrast, heterozygotes had their fertility life table parameters signifcantly reduced on Cry1Ac/Cry1F‑soybean.

Many species are phytophagous and cause injuries to plants, and can thus be defined as agricultural pests. In this study, the anatomy of the female and male reproductive tracts of three important agricultural pests in Colombia is described: Piezodorus guildinii Westwood, 1837 and Chinavia ubica Rolston 1983, found on soybeans, and Oebalus insularis Stål, 1872, found in rice crops. For that, light microscopy techniques were used. Introduction Considering the current state of soybean production and markets around the world, it is readily apparent that it is possible to divide the countries in the world in two halves: producer and consumers’. Consumers’ countries are mainly those belonging to the European Union that have their need for proteins used for animal feeding supplied in their majority by soybean seed or meal imports (Dros, 2004). The majority of soybean production is shared (80%) between four countries: the United States, Brazil, Argentina and China (Dros, 2004). Therefore, if we consider only those countries that may supply their internal needs and exporting either seeds, meals or oils, only the USA, Brazil and Argentina remain as exporting countries (Daydé et al., 2009). In this context, Brazil is currently the world second largest soybean producer (18%) and exporter (19%), with a cultivated area for soybean around 23 million ha and production around 3 ton/ha, reaching yearly a total production of approximately 68 million ton (CONAB, 2010). Worldwide, scientists in different countries are trying to increase both the productivity and profitability of the agricultural sector of their economies, to feed growing populations and to increase the quality of life for millions of people. In recent years there has been a growing concern about environmental changes, and about how we are using the resources available in natural habitats.

Signifi- cant differences in the mean number of moths trapped were found among different geo- graphical areas of the state. A trend was observed where the greatest number of moths was found in the Mississippi Delta, located in the western region of the state. The lowest number of moths was found in the hills located in the eastern region of the state. An annual profile of beet armyworm populations in the western section of the Mississippi Delta also revealed that wide-scale immigration of this pest typically begins at 200 Julian days (mid-July). This date could be used as a benchmark to determine when and if population levels are high enough to have the potential to cause economic damage to crops in the Mississippi Delta.     230 JOURNAL OF THE LEPIDOPTERISTS' SOCIETY GENERAL NOTES A SURVEY OF THE SPHINGIDAE OF SANIBEL ISLAND, FLORIDA Sanibel Island, which lies ca. 3 mi. off the coast of Florida at FOlt Myers, is one of a series of islands that form a chain reaching from north of Charlotte Harbor to slightly south of the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River. The island, which is roughly 12 mi. long by 3 mi. wide at its widest point, is currently suffering considerable habitat destruction from commercial development. However, large areas of relatively unspoiled land still remain. A survey was conducted to obtain data on the Sphingidae of Sanibel Island, inclading the relative abundance and feeding behavior of each species. The recent rapid commercial development of much of the island makes these data, obtained before this latest and largest wave of habitat destruction, especially important. METHODS Two methods of data collection were utilized in making this survey. The pri­ mary method involved observing and collecting specimens as they fed at flowers (mainly sea periwinkle, Vinca rosea), and collecting at lights was used as a sec­ ondary method. Three major sites were used in the primary method. Two of these sites were large open areas, largely covered with V. msea. Both of these sites were within 300 yd. of the Gulf of Mexico but were surrounded by large trees so that ocean breezes, which would influence feeding behavior, were negligible. The third site was farther inland. This site was partially covered with V. msea, but numerous bushes and small trees were scattered over it as well.
