ABSTRACT Taking the use of the logos in Ratzinger’s Regensburg Lecture as its starting point, the thesis expands three horizons in Ratzinger studies. Firstly, it extends the understanding of Ratzinger as the author of a logos theology. Secondly, it shows how the Regensburg theme of the full breadth of reason, represented by the logos, is applied by Ratzinger in a critique of secular modernity. Thirdly, it claims that the logos theology of Joseph Ratzinger can provide a repair of the culture of human rights. The thesis argues that if human rights are set exclusively within the framework of secular modernity, they fall sick and fail to meet the criterion of inclusivity and universality. Set within the framework of a Ratzingerian logos theology, their power is strengthened and their promise of inclusivity and universality restored. The thesis calls for a mutually reparative dialogue about human rights, based on the full breadth of reason, between the three constituencies of Christianity, the religions and secular modernity. The thesis concludes that the Regensburg Lecture, far from damaging the dialogue with Islam, and with secular modernity, opens up a new intercultural bridge based on a mutually enriching engagement with a logos-based culture of human rights. RETHINKING CYNICISM AND THE VALUE OF POLITICAL CRITIQUE by Suvi Maaria Irvine A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland December 2014 ©2014 Suvi Irvine All Rights Reserved Abstract: That Americans have become cynical about politics is often taken for granted in both popular and scholarly discourse. But what does it mean to be cynical? The answer to this question is far from simple and requires an investigation into the concept‟s origins, which reside in the ancient Greek philosophy known as classical Cynicism. Diogenes of Sinope, who remains the paradigmatic Cynic, was an abrasive figure in ancient Athens whose sneers and sarcasm where essential to his commitment to „living according to nature.‟ And for Diogenes, this meant living in accordance with the truth. He distrusted the social and political motivations of his fellow Athenians, and he called them out on their hypocrisy in ways that both amused and aggravated them. But what Diogenes did, above all, was demand room for honesty and the truth in the public sphere. I propose that his example is valuable in the context of contemporary American political culture, where honesty is rare and the truth is regularly disregarded. This dissertation presents an analysis of what cynicism can do for American political culture. I first address the question of what it means to be cynical and assess how much cynicism has changed since the days of Diogenes. While it may not mirror the original in all of its aspects, I argue that at root what it means to be cynical has not changed significantly, and that we can still identify cynics in our midst through their commitment to seeking and sarcastically speaking the truth.

Wishloff: Spe Salvi INTRODUCTION In his very popular book Ishmael, author Daniel Quinn questions the sustainability of our civilization in a thought-provoking way. Quinn does this by asking the reader to consider the early attempts to achieve powered flight, and, more specifically, to imagine someone jumping off in “one of those wonderful pedal-driven contraptions with flapping wings.”1 At first, all seems well for the would-be flyer but, of course, in time he crashes. Menon is a research scholar at the Department of Cultural Anthropology of Utrecht University in the Netherlands. After an eight-year reign overshadowed by controversies, scandals and further alienation of the Church from the modern world, Pope Benedict XVI wins plaudits with the precedent- shattering example of his resignation. The 2010 BBC 2 documentary, Trials of the Pope, has a revealing conversation between the producer and a close family friend of Benedict XVI and his brother Georg Ratzinger. Margarete Ricardi spoke about the Pope’s loneliness in Rome and how he frequently called his brother in Germany, and invited friends to visit him at the Vatican. Perhaps these remarks are helpful in understanding Benedict XVI and his close to eight years at the helm of the Catholic Church. It was not his first stint in Rome. He had spent twenty four years as the Church’s chief doctrinal enforcer before he took up the Chair of St. Peter. But his brilliance as a theologian, his genuine pious humility and deep faith in the centuries-old traditions of the Church did not prepare him for the post he took up in 2005. He tried to be a “teaching Pope” like his predecessor, John Paul II, and avoided getting too involved in the nitty-gritty of Church administration and management. The flamboyant John Paul II could still carry the day with his charisma and love for pageantry. But Benedict XVI is no John Paul II.

To examine Metz‘s sources and how others expand upon his work, I propose a two-part thesis. Part one arises from critical appraisal of sources upon which Metz relies in formulating his idea of memory. While the thinkers Metz draws upon are secular Jewish philosophers, Metz appropriates key notions in specifically theological ways by linking them with the memoria passionis of Jesus Christ and the Jewish religious roots of memory. Furthermore, Metz‘s apocalyptic/eschatological hope for the future differs from secular and postmodern hopes for something surprising, new, and redemptive because Metz advocates real, faith-filled content for these ideas. Part two of the thesis is critical-constructive. Metz‘s idea of memory has the potential to be more than an anthropological category. While reticent to speak of God‘s memory, anamnestic reason becomes a way of speaking about God‘s work of salvation for and with humanity. This becomes clearer when his idea of memory is considered in conjunction with the theology of God‘s memory in the writings of Latin American Candace Kristina McLean liberation theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez.

CBS, juni 2011. Executive summary – The Catholic crisis Several times the Catholic Church has been subject to large scale global media attention. A repeating theme of the media coverage has been sexual abuse of children within Catholic institutions. In March 2010 the Danish Catholic Church (DCC) found itself in the eye of the hurricane, as the Danish Catholic Bishop Czeslaw Kozon stated that the Church was aware of several assault cases in Denmark, but was not obligated to neither investigate them nor report them to the police. Subsequently the Bishop was strongly criticised by various legal experts for the lack of action in the specific cases. This resulted in the media coverage reaching a significant level, and new cases of child abuse within the DCC quickly became the top stories of the Danish press. The following two months, the DCC initiated several actions as an attempt to tackle the criticism. The fact that this crisis, in its basic elements, was an ongoing communication process, makes it a very interesting field of study. An aspect of the crisis, which was given very limited attention by the media, is how the crisis and the DCC’s communicative efforts affected the Danish Catholics. Thus, the objective of this thesis is to investigate the context and aspects of the crisis, the communication produced by the DCC during this period and finally, how it affected the Danish Catholics.

Plato’s views on love and soul turn out to have more in common with early Christianity. Stressing differences between eros and thumos, using Voegelin’s categories to discuss the Platonic Good, and expanding on Heyking’s use of Hermes, I show how tragic culture and true politics can be further enhanced by refining erotic friendship, repudiating Augustinian misanthropy, positing minimum doctrines about soul and city, and basing reason on Hermes rather than Apollo.     Indo-Pacific Journal of Phenomenology, Volume 8, Edition 2 September 2008 Page 1 of 9 Phenomenological Philosophy and Orthodox Christian Scientific Ecological Theology by Allan M Savage Abstract Contemporary philosophy, to be useful to Orthodox Christian theology, must capture the “essence” of the divine and human activity in the world in the scientific sense of Edmund Husserl. Scholastic philosophy is no longer an academically privileged supporter of theology in the interpretation of the universe. In its place, this paper suggests that phenomenological philosophy becomes the unique and transcendent partner, as it were, in the interpretive dialogue. The methodological thinking of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger offers a way of philosophical understanding that is more satisfactory than the traditional scholastic metaphysics in giving meaning to contemporary human experience. A phenomenological eco-theological approach captures the essences of a subject’s immediate and holistic perception of the environment.
