We are going to take a closer look at 3 of these Dance forms: Bollywood, Kathak and Banga. Starting in Lesson 1 with Bollywood.
Bollywood is a popular dance-form used in the Indian films, hence it is also called Filmi dance. Bollywood is often a combination of fusion form or pure forms and encompasses dance styles such as Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Odissi, Garba & Bhangra as well as Belly-dance, Latin, Hip hop, Contemporary and Jazz.
Bollywood is popular in western culture especially because of its use by stars such as Madonna, Shakira, Britney Spears and others who have used Bollywood moves and costumes in their video clips. (https://akademi.co.uk/)
Bollywood dance originated in Bombay, India, which is now known as Mumbai. The mix of the words Bombay and Hollywood inspired the term “Bollywood.”
Bollywood Dance often tells a story and there are certain features that are important. (bbc.co.uk)
• Hand movements These are hand movements that act as a form of sign language to help to tell a story or demonstrate themes such as weather, animals or places.
• Neck and head movements The side-to-side neck movement and the forward-and-back slide - known as the pigeon head - is predominantly an aesthetic part of the dance, but it also adds a sense of fluidity. Eyes follow the hands a lot of the time so move quickly.
• Facial expressions Classical Indian dance incorporates two basic elements - abhinaya (expression) and nritta (pure dance)
• Footwork The bounce that dancers often perform in Bollywood dance routines is referred to in English as the chicken step
• Costume Costume is important in all Indian Dance it accentuates the movements. They are often elaborate and brightly coloured for both men and women. Eye catching jewellery is often worn, sometimes this creates an additional rhythm or sound.
