J. C. Ryle’s auto- Obiography is a prime example – it had only been studied by one historian, shortly after the Second World War, and was last seen half a century ago. Although a poor copy of a copy was published in 1975, the original was presumed lost or destroyed. What a delight it was, therefore, to track down Ryle’s manuscript in December 2015 in the private family archive of Teir Serene Highnesses, John Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg and Bettina Princess of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg. I am grateful for their hospitality and permission to publish this critical edition of Ryle’s text, as well as previously unknown photographs from the Ryle family albums and details from the Ryle Family Bible. Other members of the Ryle family have also been of great assis- tance in my hunt for Ryle papers. C. Ryle almost twenty years ago. ANDREW ATHERSTONE Oxford May 2016 xv INTRODUCTION ohn Charles Ryle (1816-1900) was one of the most infuential evangelical clergymen of the nineteenth century. A popular Jplatform speaker and prolifc tract writer, he spent 36 years as a minister in rural Sufolk before his surprise appointment by Ben- jamin Disraeli in 1880 as the frst bishop of Liverpool. Whether in a village parish of 300 people, or the bustling northern metropolis of 1.1 million, Ryle sought to apply evangelical principles to the mission of the church. A lover of Reformation and Puritan theol- ogy, he exhorted congregations to walk in the ‘old paths’ when it came to the gospel message, but to break the shackles of Anglican institutionalism in their eforts at innovative evangelism. His legacy for the evangelical movement, especially in the Church of England, was considerable.1 To understand the early decades of Ryle’s life and ministry, his manuscript autobiography is a rich and unparalleled source. Ryle details his pursuit of academic plaudits and sporting prowess, and the impact of the collapse of the family bank upon his ambitions to enter parliament or establish himself as a landed gentleman. He describes his early friendships, his loves and losses, his experiences as a young clergyman in three diferent parishes, and the deaths of his frst two wives. He ofers a frank assessment of his joys and struggles, and the reasons behind his crucial life choices. Covering 45 years, from Ryle’s birth until his move to a new parish in 1861, his autobiography is essential for a proper appreciation of the man behind the headlines. Written for his children and never intended for publication, Ryle’s narrative reveals the shaping of his life and thought in the years before he reached national and inter- national fame. Biography and Autobiography Te relationship between Ryle’s manuscript autobiography and his mid-twentieth-century biographers is a complex saga in need of unravelling. Te manuscript was inherited by Ryle’s second son, Herbert Edward Ryle (1856-1925), an infuential churchman and scholar, successively president of Queens’ College, Cambridge, bishop of Exeter, bishop of Winchester, and dean of Westminster. When called upon in 1916 to preach at Macclesfeld at the centenary cel- ebration of J. C. Ryle’s birth, Herbert quoted several passages from the autobiography, which he called his father’s ‘memoirs’ – the frst known public reference to this private text.2 It was later amongst the documents lent in 1928 to Maurice Fitzgerald (1877-1963), Herbert’s former chaplain, for his memoir of the dean. Fitzgerald sampled 2 ‘Te dean of Westminster in Macclesfeld: centenary commemoration at the parish church’, Macclesfeld Courier and Herald, 21 October 1916, p. 3. xviii Introduction the autobiography, to illustrate the religious atmosphere of the Ryle home, but was at pains to emphasize that Herbert ‘outgrew’ his father’s evangelicalism, which many by the 1920s believed to be ‘narrow, inadequate, or even distorted’.3 Although J. C. Ryle was largely forgotten during the frst half of the twentieth century, there was an unexpected resurgence of interest in his life and teaching in the decades after the Second World War. His pioneer biographer was Marmaduke Guthrie Clark (1908-71), an evangelical clergyman at Ilfracombe in Devon. Clark had initially encountered Ryle as a teenager, in his frst term as an undergraduate at Keble College, Oxford in 1927, when he picked up a cheap second-hand copy of Knots untied from a bookstall in Holywell Street. Clark was immediately captivated and testifed that Ryle ‘cast his spell upon me’ and strengthened him in evan- gelical convictions, an author ‘to whose writings I owe more than I can say’. When twenty years later, in 1947, he was commissioned by Church Book Room Press to write a brief biography of Ryle for the ‘Great Churchmen’ series of booklets, he approached it as a ‘sacred task’.4 ‘What a tragedy it is today’, Clark wrote, ‘that we cannot see more men of Ryle’s stamp.’5 He hunted for Ryle man- uscripts and, with Fitzgerald’s help, traced Herbert Ryle’s surviv- ing son, Edward Hewish Ryle (1885-1952), custodian of the family archive, then living at Navan, County Meath, in Ireland.6 Te Ryle 3 Maurice H.

The Church in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century held a view of the scriptures which had been taken over from Greek thought in the early Christian centuries and been further reinforced by the Reformation. They thought of God literally breathing the Scripture into the writers of the Biblical documents. The result of this was that the Bible was held to speak authoritatively on all matters whether they related to man’s relationship to God or to the scientific origins of the Universe. The ordinary Christian man and woman in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries regarded the Judaeo-Christian religion as an Historical religion. It concerned the story of God’s historical acts in relation to his people.

The wind and the rain howled across the river from the far banks of that dreadful and wild isle called Thorney with some justification. The little monastic church recently built on the orders of King Sebert stood forlornly waiting to be consecrated the next day by Bishop Mellitus, the first Bishop of London, who would be travelling west from the great Minster of St Paul’s in the City of London. As he drew in his empty nets and rowed to the southern bank he saw an old man dressed in strange and foreign clothing hailing him. Would Edric take him across even at this late hour to Thorney Island? Hopeful for some reward, Edric rowed across the river, moaning to the old man about the poor fishing he had suffered and received some sympathy as the old man seemed to have had some experience in the same trade. After the old man had alighted and entered the little church, suddenly the building was ablaze with dazzling lights and Edric heard chanting and singing and saw a ladder of angels leading from the sky to the ground. Edric was transfixed. Then there was silence and darkness. The old man returned and admonished Edric for fishing on a Sunday but said that if he caste his nets again the next day into the river his reward would be great.

Whitchurch hen Queen Elizabeth I died on March 24, 1603, she left behind a nation rife with religious tensions.1 The queen had managed to govern for a lengthy period of almost half a century, during which time England had become a genuine international power, in part due to the stabil- ity Elizabeth’s reign afforded. YetE lizabeth’s preference for Protestantism over Catholicism frequently put her and her country in a very precarious situation.2 She had come to power in November 1558 in the aftermath of the disastrous rule of Mary I, who had sought to repair the relation- ship with Rome that her father, King Henry VIII, had effectively severed with his founding of the Church of England in 1532. As part of Mary’s pro-Catholic policies, she initiated a series of persecutions against various Protestants and other notable religious reformers in England that cumu- latively resulted in the deaths of about three hundred individuals, which subsequently earned her the nickname “Bloody Mary.”3 John Rogers, friend of William Tyndale and publisher of the Thomas Matthew Bible, was the first of her victims. For the most part, Elizabeth was able to maintain re- ligious stability for much of her reign through a couple of compromises that offered something to both Protestants and Catholics alike, or so she thought.4 However, notwithstanding her best efforts, she could not satisfy both groups.     The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Aptly described by Melvyn Bragg as ‘the DNA of the English language’, the King James Bible went with Britain’s emigrants as her colonies and trading networks became an Empire, so that now its coinages and cadences are heard wherever and however English is spoken. One glorious example: Dr Martin Luther King used its version of Isaiah chapter 40 verses 4–5 in his supreme speech: ‘I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low…’ This global importance has been reflected around the world over the past year. In the United States and in many Commonwealth countries there have been major symposia and conferences, with outstanding exhibitions featuring original 1611 Bibles. Church communities everywhere have celebrated the King James Bible with reading marathons, artistic displays, lectures, and commemorative services. For its own part the Trust has both tried to give as much publicity as possible to all this effort through its website, and itself instigated a press and publicity campaign. It has helped promote major lectures at Hampton Court Palace and Windsor Castle.

    The College and Canons of St Stephen’s, Westminster, 1348 - 1548 Volume I of II Elizabeth Biggs PhD University of York History October 2016 Abstract This thesis is concerned with the college founded by Edward III in his principal palace of Westminster in 1348 and dissolved by Edward VI in 1548 in order to examine issues of royal patronage, the relationships of the Church to the Crown, and institutional networks across the later Middle Ages. As no internal archive survives from St Stephen’s College, this thesis depends on comparison with and reconstruction from royal records and the archives of other institutions, including those of its sister college, St George’s, Windsor. In so doing, it has two main aims: to place St Stephen’s College back into its place at the heart of Westminster’s political, religious and administrative life; and to develop a method for institutional history that is concerned more with connections than solely with the internal workings of a single institution. As there has been no full scholarly study of St Stephen’s College, this thesis provides a complete institutional history of the college from foundation to dissolution before turning to thematic consideration of its place in royal administration, music and worship, and the manor of Westminster. The circumstances and processes surrounding its foundation are compared with other such colleges to understand the multiple agencies that formed St Stephen’s, including that of the canons themselves. Kings and their relatives used St Stephen’s for their private worship and as a site of visible royal piety.

    ABSTRACT In the early nineteenth century, the Church of England faced a crisis of self- understanding as a result of political and social changes occurring in Britain. The church was forced to determine what it meant to be the established church of the nation in light of these new circumstances. In the 1830s, a revival took place within the Church of England which prompted a renewal of the theology and practice of the church, including the Eucharist. This revival, known as the Oxford Movement, breathed new life into the High Church party. A heightened emphasis was placed on the sacramental life and on the Eucharist as the focus of worship. Adherents of the Oxford Movement developed a Eucharistic theology which promoted a closer connection between the elements and Christ’s presence in the Eucharist than did the earlier Anglican tradition. One of the exponents of this Eucharistic theology was Robert Isaac Wilberforce (1802- 1857). The second son of anti-slavery crusader William Wilberforce, Robert was raised in a family of prominent Anglican Evangelicals. At the University of Oxford he came under the influence of his tutor, John Keble, who was one of the four leaders of the Oxford Movement during its heyday. The Gorham case, whose focus was ostensibly the question of baptismal regeneration, turned into a debate on the state’s control over the established church.
