KAUAI’S HINDU MONASTERY 107 Kaholalele Road, Kapaa, HI 96746 Phone: 808-822-3012 Email: [email protected] Website: http://www.himalayanacademy.com/monastery/about Kauai's Hindu Monastery, or Kauai Aadheenam, is a traditional South Indian style monastery/temple complex on the island of Kauai. It was founded in 1970 by our Gurudeva, Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami (1927-2001), 162nd Jagadacharya of the Nandinatha Sampradaya’s Kailasa Parampara, which extends back 2,200 years and beyond, to Maharishi Nandinatha and his eight disciples—Sanatkumara, Sanakar, Sanadanar, Sananthanar, Sivayogamuni, Patanjali, Vyaghrapada and Tirumular. In recent times the power of this lineage was passed through Siddha Kadaitswami (1804-1891) to Satguru Chellappaswami (1840-1915) and then to Siva Yogaswami (1872-1964), who ordained Gurudeva as his successor in 1949 with a tremendous slap on the back. Yogaswami instructed Gurudeva to “go ‘round the world and roar like a lion” and “build a bridge between East and West.” Gurudeva’s Kauai monastery, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, has become a powerful pillar supporting a robust spiritual bridge joining India and America. From this small monastery Gurudeva did indeed roar like a lion—in his travels worldwide, his legacy Master Course Trilogy, his acclaimed international quarterly magazine Hinduism Today and the many other extensive outreach efforts of Himalayan Academy, the teaching and publishing branch of his organization. The echoes of his roaring become ever stronger as time passes. Introduction The earliest description of the origin of the four varnas from different limbs of the Primeval Being (purusa) occurs in the Purusasukta hymn of the Rigveda, which is admittedly of a later date and is an interpolated section. However, it is only in the later Vedic period that the varna system, with its taboos and restrictions effectively emerged. Interestingly, outside the four fold varna system there existed other social groups, often controversially designated as the “fifth” varna who were relegated to the lowest rung of the social ladder. They were viewed in sastric prescriptions as offsprings of pratiloma unions (between higher varna female and lower varna male) and were severely reprobated by law givers. As will be seen they were at the receiving end of all types of social ostracization. 2. The Untouchables The caste system undoubtedly forms an unique feature of the traditional Indian society. This system of social gradation has invariably given rise to the question of untouchability and the isolation of certain occupational groups from the mainstream of the society. They were moreover, condemned to live outside the normal habitat of the Aryan people. 2.1 Terms Denoting Untouchables Various terms such as Antya, Antyaja and Antyavasayin have been used, not always uniformly, to denote these lowest castes, whose contact came to be regarded in varying degrees as defiling. The terms Antya and Antyaja have been generally used appellations for the lowest castes such as the Chandalas. 2.2 Indication of Untouchability 2.2.1 In Vedic Society In the early Vedic literature several of the names of castes that are spoken of in the Smritis as Antyajas occur. -

Shankar 2004 ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the theme of dance imagery in south Indian temples by focusing on one aspect of dance expression, namely, the 108-karana sculptures. The immense popularity of dance to the south Indian temple is attested by the profusion of dance sculptures, erection of dance pavilions (nrtta mandapas), and employment of dancers (devaradiyar). However, dance sculptures are considered merely decorative addtitions to a temple. This work investigates and interprets the function and meaning of dance imagery to the Tamil temple. Five temples display prominently the collective 108-karana program from the eleventh to around the 17th century. The Rajaraja Temple at Thanjavur (985- 1015 C.E.) displays the 108-karana reliefs in the central shrine. From their central location in the Rajaraja Temple, the 108 karana move to the external precincts, namely the outermost gopura. In the Sarangapani Temple (12-13th century) at Kumbakonam, the 108 karana are located in the external façade of the outer east gopura. The subsequent instances of the 108 karana, the Nataraja Temple at Cidambaram (12th-16th C.E.), the Arunachalesvara Temple at Tiruvannamalai (16th C.E.), and the Vriddhagirisvara Temple at Vriddhachalam (16th-17th C.E.), ii also use this relocation. -

Pancha Bhuta Kshetras • Refers to the five Shiva temples dedicated to Lord Shiva – Each representing the manifestation of these five prime elements. – The five elements are believed to be enshrined in the five lingams. – Lingams symbolize the divinity of Shiva. – Each of the five lingams representing Shiva in the temple have five distant names based on the elements they represent.
