One year before that, the great Sera Mey Kensur Rinpoche Lobsang the most perfect Guru devotion, you Tharchin arrived in New Jersey and resided just 10 minutes from need look no further than H.E. What are the chances that I would end the years as he shows us a glimpse up in faraway distant America and live ten minutes away from one of of his incredible loyalty, respect and the greatest living masters of this century? I believe I collected very good merits from my previous life to be able to live so near such a commitment to two of his Gurus, from great master! In 1970s USA, the Dharma was not very mainstream his earliest childhood to today. and teachers were very rare indeed. How lucky was I?! I always rejoice at this fact and am amazed at my good fortune! When I started receiving teachings from Sera Mey Kensur Rinpoche Lobsang Tharchin, I found out that he had met H.H. Pabongka Rinpoche in Tibet and received teachings from him. Kensur Rinpoche was a very devoted disciple of H.H. Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche and H.H. Zong Rinpoche. He was also was a great Abbot of Sera Mey Monastery – he successfully uplifted the educational standard of the whole monastery and paid off all their huge loans during his tenure. Understandably, he earned great respect from everyone at Sera Mey. When I received my initiations from Kensur Rinpoche Lobsang Tharchin, I was determined to do the sadhanas and practices that I continue up until now. I am forever grateful to him. In later years, when I entered Gaden and was going to be a monk, Kensur Rinpoche Lobsang Tharchin was very pleased and said I was doing the right thing. Wow! He said I was doing the right thing! You have no idea what bliss I felt upon hearing his words. I trusted him completely and without question. As a child I would try to visit Kensur Rinpoche as often as possible in New Jersey, but I was deathly afraid of him. I saw him as an enlightened Being and I was just a cockroach or a nothing and felt so scared to disturb him. 05 The 24-hour Lamrim LIBERATION Recitation Retreat: A first for Kechara and a first in Malaysia. IN THE PALM OF

By Tenzin Losang In July, Kechara House witnessed yet another historical event – Malaysia’s first YOUR HAND and largest 24-hour Lamrim recitation. Kechara’s 24-hour Lamrim recitation was a heart-warming event that saw round- the-clock effort by Kechara members and friends who came from all over Malaysia and abroad to recite the Lamrim. In all, over 560 participants were involved. And to top it all off, the event was also witnessed and endorsed by the Malaysia Book of Records – officially making it Malaysia’s very first 24-hour Lamrim event. The Lamrim Chenmo or The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment was written by based on Lama Atisha’s 11th-century text A Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment. However, the rich history of the Lamrim did not just emerge in the 11th century; it goes all the way back to the time of Buddha Shakyamuni himself 203 down, 7797 to go! whose teachings became the foundation of Atisha’s classic text. Under the request of his Guru, Trijang The Lamrim text used at Kechara’s 24-hour Rinpoche, who would later become the junior tutor to the 14th , edited the entire teaching into a book, which would later become known as Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand. The Lamrim is said to contain the essence of the Buddha’s 84,000 teachings, making it an ideal guide for modern-day people with busy lifestyles. In fact, the Lamrim has the entire “roadmap” one needs to achieve Enlightenment. Having a copy of it literally means having the entire set of instructions to reach Enlightenment in the palm of your hand! Since the Lamrim contains the entire path to Enlightenment, reciting it is said to be very beneficial. Lamrim recitation blesses the person who recites it, the surrounding environment as well Founder of as other beings who listen to the recitation. the Gelug The benefits of reciting the Lamrim are so vast that H.E. The team had to use their imagination to visualise the completed “blinged up” White Tara so they could proceed to place the crystals on the most appropriate BLING parts of the statue. Jewel Offerings and Inner Peace

There’s far more to this project than just making Tara look pretty. Far from being just an outward decoration, it represents a very profound practice of offering to the Three Jewels. In the case of the “blinged up” White Tara, the significance of making these jewel offerings is related to wealth – both inner and outer riches. Precious offerings such as the crystals will bring forth outer wealth and inner peace (which is, after all, a different kind of wealth!). Meritorious acts like this will ensure that a person will be reborn in an environment with everything he or she needs. This option of offering jewels on Buddha statues was first inspired by our own Guru when Tsem Rinpoche offered Swarovski crystals onto his personal statues. This inspired his students to do the same and jewel offerings have been a tradition ever since. There is no doubt that beautifying a statue is indeed a pleasing and meritorious act. Do drop by KSA if you’re inspired to uncover the deeper nuances of spirituality through artistic expression or to beautify your own Buddha images. You never know what hidden talents and creativity you may unleash! For more information about KSA’s services and products, please visit www.kechara.com/ksa or call +603 7880 6768.

10 The Great Masters

In the Gelugpa tradition of Buddhism, there have been many great masters who have taught the way of the Buddha. Our lineage has seen some of the greatest teachers who have compassionately shared the Dharma solely for the benefit of all sentient beings. Some of these masters include:

H.H. Pabongka Rinpoche

Pabongka Rinpoche was widely known throughout Tibet for his incredible teachings, Rinpoche and his late Guru H.E. Kensur which he imparted to both Sangha and laypeople. Jampa Yeshe. Rinpoche is known He started out humbly with such little academic throughout the monastery for serving his prowess that his peers would often call him “dull”. Think about it – Zong Rinpoche was among the first generation without a Guru to advise us, how can we of courageous Lamas to bring Tibetan Buddhism know when we’re making mistakes when to the West. By his kindness and guidance, many we don’t even have the experience to know centres, teachers and practitioners have arisen what we’re doing in the first place?! Gurus throughout the modern and Western world; are absolutely essential in developing and many of today’s most radiant teachers in the sustaining our spiritual practice. Even world, including our very own Guru, H.E. Tsem Lord Buddha developed his practice under Tulku Rinpoche, studied under him. As a direct the guidance of Gurus, so if he needed disciple of Trijang Rinpoche, Zong Rinpoche was instruction in his spiritual practice, it is safe among the great elites that came out from Tibet to say that we all do! to share the teachings with the world. Almost all the practices we now have in Kechara House are directly from Zong Rinpoche. H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche is an integral part of the lives of Kecharians. Here, six of them share what he truly means to them.

Wee Sock Wan, Kechara Care My first contact with Rinpoche was through his teachings on the Internet. This was almost two years ago and I found his teachings to be very inspiring. In particular, I am moved by how much concern he puts into the welfare of others, his generosity and his genuine selflessness. This inspired me to get involved with Kechara and its activities. Soon after that, I became a full-time staff of Kechara Care in March 2011. I feel Rinpoche embodies the true qualities of a Bodhisattva in the sense that he practises unconditional compassion for all sentient beings. What also amazes me is his ability to teach Dharma to people in a way they can truly relate to, no matter what their level of spirituality is. He is a master at creating scenarios and examples that we all find familiar to illustrate his points clearly. Although I have been serving Kechara as full-time staff for only a few months, through Rinpoche’s blessings and teachings, I have learnt to be more patient and caring. My experience at Kechara so far has led me to become more aware of the needs of others.

JP Thong, Liaison and Director of Operations, Tsem Ladrang Years ago, I was given a copy of Why I Make Myself Unhappy. It is a book by Rinpoche and what I read made me want to learn more about him and his teachings. This led me to Kechara to attend a Dharma talk by Rinpoche. What struck me most at that talk was how logical and eloquent Rinpoche was in explaining his views. I saw the wisdom in him and wanted to learn more, so I became more and more involved with Kechara. I feel Rinpoche is a true personification of compassion. No matter how difficult or stubborn his students may be, he never gives up on them. His love and care for his students is unconditional and he is constantly thinking of creative ways to help his students change for the better. I find this quality very rare and precious. Since coming under his guidance and care I have become more patient and approachable – this is what my friends tell me. I have learned to let go of issues that have bothered me tremendously for many years and have come to believe that unconditional love and care is not impossible to develop, as exemplified by Rinpoche himself.

Girlie Ooi, Administrative Manager, Kechara Paradise SS2 When I first heard about Rinpoche 10 years ago, it didn’t occur to me then that Rinpoche was more than just your ordinary monk. Later, I started to learn more when I attended some of his teachings and my perception began to change. I began to realise his passion for helping the homeless and needy, his loving kindness and his reverence for his teachers. Moved by these qualities, I began to see him as my spiritual guide. One of the things that I find inspiring about Rinpoche is the fact that he did not come over to Malaysia on a religious conquest to convert as many people as possible. He came to help people become better human beings and just to help their lives. Whether they wanted to become Buddhists or not was an entirely different matter altogether. Rinpoche teaches universal values that can be applied by anyone, no matter what religion or creed they belong to. I think one of his most valuable advice to all of us is to forgive, move on with our lives and not to be weighed down by unnecessary baggage. If we learn to live like this, our lives would be less of a burden and so much more fulfilling. Tho Guan Choon, Volunteer My interest in Tibetan Buddhism started during a trip to Tibet a few years ago. When I came home, I was interested to learn more and searched the Internet for Tibetan Buddhist centres in Malaysia – this was how I found Kechara. The first time I ever saw Rinpoche was at an appreciation dinner at Kechara Oasis for volunteers. I was amazed to learn that he had been a fashion model before and his style of teaching was very unique, not what I expected from a spiritual teacher. However, due to lack of knowledge I had some reservations about “Guru devotion”. Guru devotion made me think of blind faith practised by personality cults but as I got more involved with Kechara, I began to realise that it is the opposite of what I thought. Guru devotion does not enslave one to a teacher, it ensures that one receives spiritual guidance and knowledge in the most effective way. Before getting involved with Kechara, I always expected spiritual practitioners to be “perfect” in some way. Rinpoche’s teachings have taught me that nobody’s perfect and that we have to accept the flaws of other people and just get along to the best of our abilities.

Jeffrey Yee, Volunteer Before I discovered Rinpoche and his teachings, I was a rather obnoxious young man with a lot of angst and bad habits. My world then was full of shallow aspirations and I sought happiness in all the wrong places. I was just the typical young man trying his best to earn a living and pay off loans. It all began to change when I started visiting Kechara to catch up with a good old friend of mine, Ethan Chu of Kechara Care. Ethan passed me a copy of the book Peace, a compilation of short teachings by Rinpoche. Peace opened my eyes to the wealth of teachings that Rinpoche had imparted to his students. The book has since become a real anchor in my life, providing me with the guidance that I needed, so badly. One of the things that impressed me most about Rinpoche is how innovative he is in bringing Dharma to others. He does not merely teach by saying, “… because Buddha said so”; he explains everything logically and clearly and backs it all up with solid facts. He will not hesitate to depart from traditional methods in favour of more contemporary ones to reach out to people who prefer a more modern approach to spirituality.

Albert Ratchaga, Manager, Kechara Paradise 1 Utama I first came into Rinpoche’s fold when I became a part-time staff at the Kechara Paradise outlets several years ago. At that time, my involvement with Kechara was solely on a professional level as I was looking to fill an employment gap. In fact, when I got my job confirmation, I remember telling my manager that I would serve the three months in my contract and then leave! Soon after I started working, I was lucky enough to have breakfast with Rinpoche and a few other people. At that time, I regarded Rinpoche merely as an employer but soon began to realise that he wasn’t like any other employer that I’d worked for. I saw that he truly cared for his staff; he gave more than he took. These qualities intrigued me and after some time I began to see Rinpoche as a spiritual guide and not just as an employer. I must confess that before my involvement with Kechara, I was a man driven mainly by selfish motivations. Almost every act I did was to fulfill some sort of selfish need that I had, including hanging out only with people I felt were “useful” to me. But all that has changed ever since I met Rinpoche and learned about his teachings. He has inspired me to be more generous and to abandon my selfish tendencies. I have learned that life isn’t just about pursuing material wealth, that there is a much deeper meaning to it.

FROM THE SPONSORS… Datuk May Phng The greatest inspiration for my sponsoring of Kechara and the Ladrang is the work of H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche whose teachings can benefit many people to become better people and create better spaces wherever they are. Eventually, these teaching create a better world of peace with universal love and care. This is Rinpoche’s eventual goal in his quest to build Kechara World Peace Centre. I also feel that the ultimate reason for anyone to sponsor the Ladrang is faith in Rinpoche’s teachings, which will greatly benefit others since the Ladrang is a space of service to mankind and all life forms. In sponsoring the Ladrang, one lets go of selfishness which I believe is the major cause of dissatisfaction and utter unhappiness. To rid ourselves of such unhappiness, we should contribute in any form to our Lama’s Ladrang, be it skill, time or financial assistance.

Madam Lim Han Nee My monthly contribution to the Ladrang is a very small one. In fact if I had money, I would sponsor every department of Kechara. I choose to sponsor the Ladrang because it is the household of Rinpoche, which sees to Rinpoche’s every need directly. It is in the Ladrang that Rinpoche and all his assistants plan for the whole Dharma organisation’s growth; this is synonymous with the growth of Dharma through the spread of Rinpoche’s Dharma teachings and all other projects.

Angel Lee It’s an honor for me to contribute to the Ladrang, the head quarters of the organisation. If there is no Ladrang, there is no organisation. Sponsoring the Ladrang is equivalent to sponsoring Rinpoche and His house whole. I think that it is good for everyone to promote the Ladrang, and share what it stands for.

IN MEMORIAM It is with much sadness that we announce the passing away of H.E. Kensur Jampa Yeshe, one of Tsem Rinpoche’s Gurus of Gaden Shartse Monastery. Kensur Rinpoche was one of the very last of the great teachers from the old generation that came from Tibet. His Eminence Kensur Rinpoche is a renowned Dharma scholar and highly realised meditation master. He was known to hold his vows very strongly and under his abbotship of Gaden Shartse, the excellence in Buddhist studies grew throughout the monastery. At the age of 82, Kensur Rinpoche entered clear light while in a hospital and remained in death meditation for a number of days. He was brought back to Gaden Shartse where many monks recited prayers and sacred texts continuously, 24 hours a day. Representatives from Kechara also travelled to Gaden to make offerings and prayers on behalf of H.E. Tsem Tulku Rinpoche. Back at home, Kechara members also did several Menlha and Drolchok pujas, requesting Kensur Rinpoche’s swift return to us, to continue to turn the wheel of Dharma. We continue to make our sincere prayers that Kensur Rinpoche – and all great masters like him – will continuously return among us to teach. May we always have the great fortune to be connected to qualified, compassionate teachers.
