ACCREDITED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN THE UNITED STATES Supplement to Bulletin, 1934, No. 17 United States Gffice of Education Statistical Division ACCREDITED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN THE UNITED STATES Supplement to Bulletin;1934, No. 17 JNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR Harold L. Ickes, Secretary )FFICE OF EDUCATION ---------- J. W. Studebaker, Commissioner JNITEn STATES GoVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE - - - W ASBINGTON : 1937 ~or sale by the Superintendent of Documents. Washington, D. C. ---- Price 10 cents SUPPLEMENT TO ACCREDITED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN THE UNITED STATES This supplement has been prepared to be used with Office of Education Bulletin 1934, No. 17, which is the latest complete bulletin of accredited secondary schools in the United States.1 It shows under each State: First, names of schools which should be added to the corresponding lists (both local and regional) in the bulletin; next, those which should be removed whether because of lowering of standards or voluntary withdrawal,· or for any other reason; and last, any changes which should be made in name or address, the listing as it should be at present being shown first, and after that the former listing. Under this heading are shown also the names of those schools which no longer are found on the appropriate regional association list . .An asterisk (*) placed in front of the name of a school indicates that such school is on the list of the accrediting association for that section (name of which association is given at the head of th~ list) as well as on the list of the State accrediting agency, while an "r" following the name indicates that the school is found on the associa tion's list only; "s" means that it is on the State department's list and not on the university's list. Schools for Negro students only are distinguished by an "n" if the information is not already con tained in the name of the school. Similarly, if the information is not already contained in the name, schools for boys are marked "b", those for girls "g." Others are coeducational except in a few cases where the information was not available. This information was particularly lacking for the Philippine Islands. Names of private schools are printed in italics. The following table is of interest as showing number of schools accredited in the several States as of a given date. ·In many cases · the additions and removals for a State quite or nearly balance each other so that for a real comparison reference must be had to the lists. 1 Available from the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, Washington, D. C;• at lli cents per copy. 1 2 ACCREDITED SECONDARY SCHOOLS NUMBER OF ACCREDITED SECONDARY SCHOOLS, BY STATES BULLETIN 1934, No. 17 LISTS UsED IN Tms SUPPLEMENT STATE Number Date of lists 1 Number of schools Date of lists of schools 2 3 4 IS Alabama___________________ June 30, 1934 (1933-34) ____ _ 337 June 30, 1935 (1935-36) _____ 340 Arizona____________________ 1933-34 (1933) _____________ _ 73 1935-36 (1936) ______________ 72 Arkansas.~ ___ :_____________ 1932-33 (1933) _____________ _ 129 1935-36 (1936) ______________ 140 Califomfl\______ --------__ __ 1932-33.. ----------_______ _ 488 1934-35.------------------- 501 Colorado _________ ---------_ 1933-34 (1933) _____________ _ 204 June 1936 (1936) ___________ 214 Connecticut________________ 1932-33 (1933) -------------- 126 1933-34 (1936) ______________ 127 Delaware __________________ 1933-34 (Jan.1,1934) _____ _ 32 1935-36 (Jan. 1, 1936) ______ 35 District of Columbia_______ (Jan. 1, 1934) _____________ _ 29 (Jan. 1, 1936) ______________ 30 Florida ___________ ---------- 1932-33 (1933-34) __________ _ 216 1934-35 (1935-36) ___________ 224 Georgia.-------_____ ----___ 1933-34 (1933-34) ---------__ 420 1935-36 (1935-36) ___________ 453 1935-36 (1936-37) ___________ ~r:o• _ =--=-- -_-_-_-_-_-_-_ -_-_-__--_ ·-_-_-_-_ __ 1933-34 (1933-34) __________ _ 170 168 018 1932-33, 1933-34 (1933) ____ _ 799 1935 (1936) _________________ 815 Indiana __________ --------__ 1933-34 (1933) _____________ _ 833 1934-35 ~1936) ______________ 832 Iowa_______________________ 1933-34 (1933) ________ ------ 1,007 1935-36 1936) ______________ 1, 016 Kansas_____________________ 1933-34 {1933) -------------- 708 1934-35 (1936) ______________ 709 Kentucky __________________ June 30, 1933 (1933-34) ____ _ 648 1934-35 (1935-36) ___________ 645 Louisiana.----------------- 1933-34 {1933-34) __________ _ 439 July 1, 1935 ~1935-36) _____ _ 444 Maine.-------------------- 1933-34 (1933) _____________ _ 249 1935-36 (1936 -------------- 251 Maryland__________________ October 1933 (Jan. 1, 1934)_ 207 October 1935 (Jan.1,1936)_ 209 Massachusetts._----------- 1934 (1933)----------------- 293 1935 (1936) _________________ 303 622 1936-37.
