Fall 2012: Building Our Future

s we round out our 75th anni- versary year, we are pleased to Aannounce that School will be raising funds for a small expan- sion on the north side of the building. This expansion will provide the school with a primary classroom on the main fl oor with an adjacent portico and a new science lab upstairs. These two rooms will provide an enhanced learning envi- ronment for our students. Furthermore, adding this additional space will pro- vide us with a classroom for two middle school subjects, math and Spanish. For the fi rst time in fi fteen years, we will be able to have all our middle school stu- dents (grades fi ve through eight) on the top fl oor. Primary classes will move to the the main fl oor. The art lab will also be downstairs, with an adjacent drying lab for projects. The School Advisory Council, the pastor and principal are committed to the two classroom per grade model with the average class size in grades one through eight hovering at 25 students per class. In pre-k our ratio will remain one teacher to eleven students, with our class size around 20. The Kindergarten class will remain at approximately 25, with a teacher and an instructional aide. All Saints School and Parish community take pride in offering a great learning environment for our stu- dents. At 460 students and 35 faculty members (with over 75% holding masters degrees), All Saints is meeting our commitment of quality Catholic education for every child Please Join Us for Our Annual Fund Breakfast enrolled. in the Parish Hall Wednesday, November 7, 7:30 a.m. In order to provide funds for underwriting this proj- Guest Speaker: ect, our Annual Fund Drive will have a kick-off breakfast in All Saints Alumnus Joey Harrington the parish hall under the banner of “Building Our Future.” Tickets: $25 Please join us on November 7th at 7:30 a.m. to hear guest speaker Joey Harrington’s inspirational talk about what attending All Saints School meant to him. For over fi fteen years, the children of All Saints School have had the good fortune of being able to take part in our “Chrysalis” program. This program offers experiential learning opportunities to augment our curricu- lum studies. The study of eighth grade U.S. History comes alive when students fl y to our nation’s capitol and visit the places that they have studied. With our nation’s capitol dome shining in the night, eighth graders visit all of the major memorials from Lincoln to Jefferson in their fi rst night tour. Daily places on the students’ itiner- ary both awe and inspire and serve as a reminder of history. The Air & Space Museum, Smithsonian Museums, Holocaust Museum, Bureau of Engraving, Newseum, National Archives, Ford’s Theatre, Arlington Cemetery, as well as Mt. Vernon are all part of this expansive trip. Our seventh grade program has a fall and spring component. In the fall, seventh graders engage in a four-day spiritual and scientifi c retreat in the mountains at Opal Creek. They study fl ora and fauna, take a water- color class, go on hikes and participate in lab experiments as part of this experience. In the spring, the seventh graders study the oceans and creatures of the deep with a trip to the coast. After a research project, they attend the “Oceans and Motions” program. Participants live in yurts at Newport Beach for three days, study tide pools, travel on the Marine Discovery Boat, collect plankton and crabs, go whale watching, and participate in labs at the Hatfi eld Marine Science Center and Oregon Coast Aquarium as part of this educational adventure. Sixth graders attend outdoor school for a week, studying the natural habitats of animals in and around Oregon. Staying in cabins, breathing fresh air, and singing around a campfi re provide plenty of opportunity for inquiry and interaction. Grade fi ve studies the westward movement by taking a three-day Oregon History trip. Experiencing the Indian “Trail of Tears,” the Discovery Center, End of the Oregon Trail Museum, and panning for gold enable students to feel the warm winds of history and gain an appreciation for our Oregon past. A journey with Lewis and Clark highlights our grade four learning experience in history. Looking down the Columbia River from the Astoria Column or hiking the Cape Disappointment trail in Washington, our All Saints students feel like explorers on the move. A visit to Fort Clatsop and the Maritime Museum encourages our students to think about the vision that President Jefferson had for our nation and how the Louisiana Pur- chase expanded its geographical area. All of these “Chrysalis Trips” enhance our students’ learning experiences and provide them with meth- ods of inquiry as well as interactive lessons that they carry with them when they become alums. All Saints School celebrated its 75th Anniversary in January, 2012.
