If you are joining us for the first time, we hope this book answers many of your questions. While it’s difficult to capture the warm, engaging spirit of our community on paper, these pages will give you a sense of what’s in store.

We thank the entire Camp Ramah in California community for building such an inspirational, creative and diverse program. This special annual retreat demonstrates the vision our founders and board members had of offering year- round Jewish experiential living and learning programs.

Camp Ramah in California’s warm, relaxed Passover community draws multigenerational guests from across the country and internationally, and includes singles, couples, families, empty nesters, college students, and grandparents. We welcome new participants every year with open arms, and are also delighted to reunite with friends we see each year who have become extended family.

On Thursday and Friday you will have the chance to familiarize yourself with the campus and participate in some pre-Seder programming.

All meals are served in our Dining Hall, the hub of our campus, which is close to many of our program buildings, library, several conference rooms and many guest buildings.

Yom Tov at Camp Ramah in California is a special time, with services, discussions, study groups, meditations and hikes. Some people choose to dress up for Yom Tov. Generally we encourage everyone to dress and participate as they feel comfortable - our daily dress code is casual. If the terrain is too challenging for you to walk, please let us know and we can arrange for a ride in a golf cart. PASSOVER AT RAMAH

Our first night Seders on Friday evening will be led by a group of our amazing scholars and staff. On Saturday, we welcome you to join either the Family Seder Tableau - a first for our Passover Program this year - or the traditional Seder later that evening. If you are interested in the family Seder Tableau, you must sign-up in advance.

We provide “A Different Night” Haggadah for each guest, and of course each table is set with Seder plates, ritual items and Kiddush cups. We also provide small afikomen gifts for children under age 13.

Throughout the holiday, our schedule includes activities for all levels of experience and knowledge, facilitated by our amazing artists and scholars in residence and helpful, friendly staff. We’ll have engaging discussions, small study groups, children’s activities, sports and games. On Chol Hamo’ed, in addition to group excursions, we will enjoy art projects, ropes course, movies, and so much more. Daily, our team of chefs will create spectacular, mouthwatering buffets and outstanding, personalized service.

Most importantly, don’t worry about a thing. Our staff is ready to assist you and happy to help! Tipping is not required during your stay, but if you’d like to tip, we suggest 5 to 10% of your room stay. Teri Naftalin will have an envelope for you and your tip will be distributed evenly amongst our dinner, housekeeping, and maintenance staff. We look forward to a wonderful holiday experience. To schedule an in spa appointment please contact the spa directly 805-640-1100 Be sure to mention that you are calling from Camp Ramah, the spa is located approximately 2.5 miles from Camp Ramah PASSOVER “A” to “Z” Accessibility: All of our buildings are wheelchair/handicap accessible. If you need any assistance during your stay, please arrange for a ride in our golf cart. Be aware that Los Angeles Area Airports require baggage to be checked in 1 hour prior to your scheduled departure time, and recommends arrival at the airport 60 - 90 minutes before departure. Travel time between Camp Ramah in California and the airports is approximately 1 1⁄2 hours depending on traffic.

Babysitting: We offer babysitting in the sleeping buildings and bunk areas each evening from 8pm- 11pm. Parents wishing to leave children sleeping in their rooms during that time are asked to check out with the staff in the building for that evening and to return by 11pm and check in with the staff person. Private babysitting during other hours can be arranged with sitters, please see Teri for the list of sitters.

Boxed Lunches: For guests going on our Chol Hamo’ed excursions, boxed lunches or snacks and bottled water will be provided for you. For guests going on their own day trips or departing during Passover, pre ordered boxed lunches will be available in the dining room on the requested day. If you need boxed meals and did not preorder, please place your order with a member of the staff. There is no charge for boxed meals.

Business Center: We understand many of our guests must stay connected with the outside world during their stay. We do ask that you be respectful of other guest’s observances during Yom Tov and Shabbat and stay connected in a private area. Our breathtaking Ojai location might pose some challenges for personal, wireless devices, but guests are welcome to use our computers, printer and copier at any time in our Business Center located in the main office. If you require a space to work, our staff will be happy to help you find what you need without distracting other guests.

Candle lighting: We will provide Shabbat and Yom Tov candles for candle lighting in the Dining Hall. Our daily schedule includes candle lighting times. It is most important that you do not light candles in your room!

Cars: The speed limit on campus is 5mph. You are welcome to load/unload your cars close to your assigned building and then return your car to the main parking lot for the remainder of your stay.

Cell phone use: Cell phone signals can be spotty, but for the most part we have good reception with all carriers. Public phones are available in an emergency

Children/Youth Programming:Supervised children and teen programming will be offered by professional educators and experienced counselors. Details on times and locations are available in the program. For parents of children ages 3-18, please attend the Parent meeting the 1st Shabbat morning of camp. If you arrive to camp for the 2nd half of Encampment, please attend parent meeting on Wednesday evening.

Check-in: Check-in begins on Thursday 4/2 from 3 pm to 5 pm, an additional check-in will be on Friday 4/3 from 12pm to 2pm, final check-in will be Tuesday, 4/7 beginning at 3pm. Any special arrivals should contact Teri Naftalin, Guest Coordinator, at [email protected]. Our main office will be staffed throughout the week and our Hospitality Coordinators are available 24/7. Their numbers will be provided in your room. The main office phone number is (805) 646-4301. PASSOVER “A” to “Z” Check-out: Check out is at 10am the day of your departure. All guests must check out at the reception desk of the main office before departure. If you are departing mid-holiday, we welcome you to remain on campus and enjoy the day’s programming, but please vacate your room by 10am on your day of departure to allow us time to prepare for new arrivals. Keys must be returned to the reception desk or a charge of $50 will be assessed.

Clothing: Our atmosphere is casual; however we suggest not wearing jeans on Seder nights. Temperatures can drop quickly in the evenings and early mornings so we do suggest layering your clothes.

Coffee Service: Coffee will be available each morning from 7:30am - 9:30am in the small (Katan) dining room.

Drinking Water: Water stations are available throughout the property.

Driving Directions: Online mapping and navigation systems are accurate. Our Camp address is: 385 Fairview Road, Ojai, CA 93023.

Emergencies/Illness: Out Marp (Health Center) will be staffed with a nurse. Office hours will be posted on the front door of the Marp. In the event of an emergency, call 911. Be prepared to state the nature of the problem and your location (Camp Ramah, 385 Fairview Road, Ojai, CA 93023). For minor medical issues, first aid kits are available at the reception Desk; and in the dining room.

Excursions: Day trips will depart from the Weber Garden (flag poles). Check our daily schedule for specific transportation times. Boxed lunches, snacks and water will be pre-packed and sent with you on all Ramah California outings. **Refunds will not be available if guests miss the designated departure or choose not to go on the excursion.

Food: We are a kosher campus. Please help us maintain our Passover kashrut. All your meals, snacks and beverages are provided. Outside food is not allowed on campus.

Games and Sports Equipment: Sports Equipment can be checked out from the Sports Shed, please see schedule for times. Games can be checked out in the Canteen, please see schedule for check out times. Look for a special Game Check out card in your welcome bag.

Gift Shop/Canteen: Our canteen is located on the side of our dining room. You will be able to purchase sundries & Camp Ramah in California clothing on Sunday and Monday and on all Chol Hamoed days. Look for a special Canteen card in your welcome bag.

Gratuity: (see tips) – Gratuity is not required during your stay, but if you’d like to tip, we suggest 5 to 10% of your room stay. Teri Naftalin will have an envelope for you and your tip will be distributed evenly amongst our dinner, housekeeping, and maintenance staff. PASSOVER “A” to “Z” Heated accommodations: All accommodations are heated. Cabin thermostats are in the common entryway.

Help desk: Our Help desk is located in the main office to answer questions and help you with any room, campus or programming needs. Specific office hours will be posted on the office door. You will also always see our friendly staff around campus - if they can’t assist you they will direct you to someone who can!

Housekeeping: Our housekeeping staff will be in camp throughout the week to maintain all public areas. Should you need in-room cleaning service, please ask our Hospitality Coordinator. We will change bed linens for full- stay guests once during your stay and the cleaning schedule will be posted in advance of the service.

Laundry: We provide a coin operated laundry room. It is conveniently located near the main office building. If you need any laundry supplies, please ask our staff and they will happily help.

Lost & Found: The ‘Lost and Found’ table is located outside the Katan. Please be sure to leave found items or check for lost items at this location.

Luggage Service: If you need any assistance with your luggage upon arrival or departure, please notify our Hospitality team upon arrival and we will help arrange.

Massage Therapy: Massage therapists will be available. A separate flyer with specific information was sent in advance of your arrival and appointments must be made to assure an appointment. Please refer to the Massage page in this booklet for details.

Meals: On Yom Tov and Shabbat, Kiddush is recited before the lunch meal. The buffet line will open thereafter. Parents, please help your children observe this ritual.

Messages: Messages for guests will be pinned onto the board directly outside the Katan. Guests are also welcome to leave messages for one another and request partners for cards or sports on this board.

Parking: Please observe all posted road signs throughout camp. There is a one way only loop around camp to avoid congestion and accidents. All guest cars must be parked in the main lot at the front of camp. NO cars are allowed to drive through camp other than for the loading and unloading of luggage. Any cars left on the road and not in the main parking lot will be towed at the owner’s expense. We must maintain a passable road for emergency vehicles and safety.

Prayers: All participants are welcome to join in daily religious prayer services. Times are listed in the Program Book.

Running/Walking off property: If you intend to run or walk on the road outside of our property, please be aware that there are dogs in the area that might not be as friendly as we at Camp Ramah in California and that the roads are narrow and windy. PASSOVER “A” to “Z” Seders: On the first night of Passover, please find your seat at 7:15pm to help Sederim start promptly at 7:30pm. On the second night of Passover, please see schedule for seating/starting times for the Seder you have signed up for.

Smoking: Smoking is not permitted in any area of Camp. There is a designated smoking area located in the main parking lot near the security gate. A fee will be assessed to rooms or areas showing evidence of smoking or smoke damage.

Swimming: We welcome everyone to enjoy the amazing pools and waterslide we offer at Camp Ramah in California. Pool Hours are posted in the daily schedule.

Teens: Please see the Teen Track listings in the schedule.

Telephones: Telephones are located throughout the campus, in cabins and hotel rooms for your use. Long distance calls require a calling card. To call anyone internally, dial 9 plus the three digit extension for the room you are trying to reach.

Valuables: Camp Ramah in California is not responsible for any missing or lost items. If you are uncomfortable leaving valuables in your room, please leave them locked in your car (at your own risk); or bring them to the reception Desk where they will be locked away in a safe.
