This is not an encyclopedia of Indian saints. The saints whom I have chosen here have played very important role in educating the Indian masses in Indian Dharma and its culture. I came to formulate this book in my mind when I was writing my book, The Medieval Philosophers of India . I came to realize then that the works of these Acharyas reached among the Indian masses through the life and works of the saints I have chosen here. This is then the genesis of the present book. Now I give the outline of this book. The book begins with the title, Introduction. It tells how the Bhakti Movement began in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu. The next title is Dharma. In it, I have briefly stated the ideas of Swami Vivekananda, Rabindranath Tagore and Sri Aurobindo on Indian Dharma. After having introduced the Indian Dharma, I have taken the life and works of Indian saints. Chapter 1 begins with a map of Assam and it contains the narration of life and works of Assamese saints who gave them their Dharma and culture. Chapter 2 begins with a map of West Bengal and it contains the narration of the Bengali saints. In this manner, we reach right up to the Indian State of Kerala. The saints’ biographes, which are available to us, are full of legends. I have separated out the legends in my text because some might believe or not believe in them. For instance, Vinoba Bhave does not believe that Jnandev and his brothers and sister flew to Chang Dev on a rock on which they were sitting. He believed in some other legends. I have kept some legends for completeness of my work. The readers might wonder what relevance these saints have today in modern India. These biographies suggest that if India wants to keep her Dharma alive, then she wound need to produce saints throughout her existence because the Indian Dharma is not an organised religion. It is a living thing, which is exemplified by her saints and these saints would need to know not only the Indian Dharma but also the modern existing knowledge in all the important branches of learning. Only then, they would have impact on the world. The readers might find that some of the biographies are very short and the others are very long. In this matter I had no choice. Biographies of many saints are not available to me at all. One case that I would like to point out is that of Saint Anandghan of Madhya Pradesh. He was a Jain saint who lived in the forest of Mount Abu in Rajasthan. He wrote extensively. His devotional songs are sung even to this date among the Vaishnavas of Pusti Marg. His poems on Jain thirthankars are recited by Jains. Yet, I could not find enough information about him. For this reason the map of Madhya Pradesh does not find a place in this book. From the preceding narration we should admit that we know very little about some saints. Naturally then, some biographies are bound to be short. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This book was typeset on eight computers in Microsoft Word. The computers belonged to my friends: Sharad Shah, Janak Chauhan, Renu, Chinu, Trupti, and Rohit and to friends in Shishu Milap. Krishnakant helped me in formatting the text, in adjusting the maps in the text and in many other ways. Thanks are due to all these friends. I thank them sincerely here for the help they have given to me. My friend Chinu carefully read the text and I very much appreciate his help and the word thanks is not enough for the troublesome task he undertook. The cost for the publication of this book will be borne by my elder sister, Savita. 5 INTRODUCTION The present book The Medieval Saints of India is a sequel to my earlier book The Medieval Philosophers of India . This sequel complements the previous work. Normally, philosophy is considered an academic subject. But in India, philosophy percolated through the writings of many Indian saints to the masses. It is my endeavor to present here the life and works of these saints and to show how they educated the poor toiling masses. The writings of these saints are not in one single language. They lived in various parts of India and wrote works in their respective regional language. Hence, it is extremely difficult for a person like me to convey the beauty of these works because I am not a linguist. In 1950, the Constitution of India has given official status to some 15 languages including English. Among these, 12 are regional languages of India. These are: Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu. The works of Indian saints are in these languages. Of these 12 languages, I can read and understand four, namely, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi and Gujarati. This means that I have relied on others for information of many of these works. I have acknowledged this fact at appropriate places in my write up. Here, I single out Vinoba Bhave and express my gratitude to him. I referred to Vinoba Sahitya, Vols. 9, 10, and 11 and these helped me much. These are in Hindi. I read the works of many authors to collect material for my book. Among them too, I found Vinoba Bhave to be unique. Here was a man, who liked medieval saints walked all over India and participated in the prayer meetings of the local people and gathered first hand the knowledge of their scriptural books. In this respect, he equaled those saints who traveled all over India as pilgrims for 10 to 20 years. Vinoba Bhave too walked for 13 years with his followers during the Bhoodan movement. I am not blind not to see the difference between a pilgrimage and the walk of Vinoba for the social uplift of the people. Even then, it is true that his heart was in learning regional scriptures with help of local scholars and discusses the spiritual content of each text. In this he was very close to medieval saints. The question then arises: Was Vinoba a saint? This question is difficult for me to answer. I have not seen him even from a distance. His followers have not written a significant biography of the master. Anyway, to write any biography is very difficult. When a biography fails to bring out the true personality of the person then it degenerates into a hagiography. What we have then is his bio data from his followers. They fail to take into account the criticism of his critics. Vinoba’s critics are very eminent men. Acharya Kirpalani, a Gandhian and one of the Presidents of the Indian National Congress called him a “Sarkari Sadhu” (Government-sponsored saint). Another Gandhian, Jayaprakash Narayan (JP) showed ‘great disgust’ when Vinoba Bhave made a ‘mere comment’ like ‘I leave it to God for verdict’. Since then many other have criticized him calling him a pious puritan, a self-righteous man devoid of humor and so on. These are indeed dark words that portray Vinoba as a conceited man and not worthy to be a saint. His critics tell us that Vinoba Bhave was fond of impressing ordinary persons with his vast learning.

He was a 13th century Maharashtrian Hindu saint (Sant - a title by which he is often referred), poet, philosopher and yogi of the Nath tradition whose works Bhavartha Deepika (a commentary on Bhagavad Gita, popularly known as "Dnyaneshwari"), and Amrutanubhav are considered to be milestones in Marathi literature. <b>Traditional History</b> According to Nath tradition Sant Dnyaneshwar was the second of the four children of Vitthal Govind Kulkarni and Rukmini, a pious couple from Apegaon near Paithan on the banks of the river Godavari. Vitthal had studied Vedas and set out on pilgrimages at a young age. In Alandi, about 30 km from Pune, Sidhopant, a local Yajurveda brahmin, was very much impressed with him and Vitthal married his daughter Rukmini. After some time, getting permission from Rukmini, Vitthal went to Kashi(Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, India), where he met Ramananda Swami and requested to be initiated into sannyas, lying about his marriage. But Ramananda Swami later went to Alandi and, convinced that his student Vitthal was the husband of Rukmini, he returned to Kashi and ordered Vitthal to return home to his family. The couple was excommunicated from the brahmin caste as Vitthal had broken with sannyas, the last of the four ashrams. Four children were born to them; Nivrutti in 1273, Dnyandev (Dnyaneshwar) in 1275, Sopan in 1277 and daughter Mukta in 1279. According to some scholars their birth years are 1268, 1271, 1274, 1277 respectively.

During the last part of bis College career, be came under the influence of some great Indian political leaders, especially of Lala Lajpatrai, Sardar Ajitsingh and the Honourable Gopal Krishna Gokhale, and in 1908-9 took an active part in politics. But soon after he was drawn more powerfully to the Arya Samaj. His high place in the M. A. examination would have helped him to a promising career under the Government, but he chose differently. Title of the Project/Purpose: Prepared by: Shri Bipul Ojah “A study of various aspects of Khol: Village- Dalahati A Sattriya Musical Instrument” Barpeta-781301 Assam During the first reporting period I proceeded with my works as per my plan, and took up two tasks mentioned in the plan. One of them was to acquire knowledge of ‘Ga-Maan’, “Chok’, “Ghat” etc. of the main time division (taal) of Khol from the experienced masters and Sattriyas of the Satras belonging to the three main groups. The other task was to prepare the pattern of the time division in a scientific method by maintaining the characteristic features of the Sattriya Khol on the basis of the acquired knowledge. For these two tasks, I first chose Barpeta Satra and the Satras of the Kamalabari group of Majuli, and apart from doing field study there, I acquired knowledge of the Khol from the masters there. In this course I talked to Sri Basistha Dev Sarma, Burha Sattriya of Barpeta Satra, Sri Nabajit Das, Deka Sattriya of Barpeta Satra, Sri Jagannath Barbayan (92 years), the chief ‘Bayan’ of Barpeta Satra and Sri Akan Chandra Bayan, besides several distinguished Sattriya artists and writers such as Sri Nilkanta Sutradhar, Sri Gunindra Nath Ojah, Dr. Birinchi Kumar Das, Dr. Babul Chandra Das etc. Moreover, I studied various ‘Charit Books’ (biographies of the Vaishnavite saints), research books etc. and got various data on the Khol practiced in Barpeta Satra. After completing these works on the Khol of Barpeta Satra, I worked on the time division (taal) of the Khol practiced in the Satras of the Kamalabari group of Majuli.

    INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SCIENTIFIC & TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH VOLUME 9, ISSUE 03, MARCH 2020 ISSN 2277-8616 The Charismatic Authority Of Sankardeva And Routinization Of His Charisma: A Weberian Analysis Bedanta Bikash Bora Abstract: The theory of authority is at the heart of the sociology of Max Weber where he focusses on the historical shifts in the exercise of power. The third type of authority explained by Weber is the theory of charismatic authority where he talks about the charismatic powers of different personalities like prophets, heroes in wars, religious leaders etc; by dint of which they are considered superior to the ordinary people. This paper attempts to experiment this celebrated theory in the life and legacy of Sankardeva, a 15th century polymath who founded the vaishnavism in Assam and propounded a reformed version of Hinduism. His eternal charisma on the Assamese society in many ways corresponds to the theory of Weber. The notion of the recognition of validity of charisma, the concept of felt duty, the emancipator and revolutionary spirit of charisma and repudiation of the past- can be very easily attributed to the charismatic personality of Sankardeva. Weber also talks about the routinization of charismatic personality i.e. the demands placed on the charismatic personality while settling the crisis of succession, validation of the positions of authority, social status and the economic priviledges of the subjects, and the demand of giving it an administrative apparatus; which clearly corresponds to the routinization of charisma of Sankardeva after his death in the form of shifting of the authority to his favourite disciple Madhavdeva and in increasing bureaucratization of the Sattra institutes.

Shah Muntoji Bahmani, Ambar Husain, Chand Bodhale, Shaikh Muhammad Shrigondekar, Alam Khan, Shah Baigh, Bajid Pathan, Latif Shah and Shaikh Sultan are the famous Sufi poets and authors of many books in Deccan. Shah Muntoji Bahmani was the seventeenth century Sufi poet and author. He wrote number of book like, Prakashdip, Siddhsanket, Hindu-Islam Darshan etc. in Marathi. His manuscripts are available at Rajwade Research Center and Shree Samarth Wangdevata Mandir Research Center at Dhule, Maharashtra. Ambar Husain of Daulatabad wrote Ambar Husaini and Samshlok in Marathi. Shaikh Muhammad Shrigondekar (1548- 1618 CE) was another famous Sufi saint from Ahmednager Maharashtra. He was the Guru of Malojiraje Bhosle (the grandfather of Shivaji). His literature; Yogsangram, Pawan Vijay, Bhakti Bodha and Bharud are available today. Alam Khan wrote in Marathi books; Gurumahatmya and Updeshpad. These all Sufi authors from Sixteenth to Eighteenth century made the literature in Marathi language. The proposed paper has the special focus on historical study and review of Marathi literature made by Sufis in Deccan with the ideas of harmonious coexistence within it.

The Photography Archive at the City Palace Museum Udaipur A small slice of Udaipur’s history was uncovered in May 2008 when the City Palace Complex at Udaipur yielded several trunks packed with photographs. Safely maintained over the decades among the various storerooms and inner recesses of the vast City Palace Museum Udaipur (hereafter CPMU), the trunks hold several thousand loose photographs, folios, and framed images, which are currently being catalogued and archived. Numbering more than 15,000 images, these photographs are part of the Pictorial Archives of The Maharanas of Mewar, Udaipur, and are currently housed at the CPMU. A first exhibition of these photographs has already been mounted at the newly restored Bhagwat Prakash Gallery in the Zenana Mahal of the complex. Titled Long Exposure, 1857−1957: The Camera at Udaipur, the exhibition and the study of the collection is gradually revealing an unabashed “native” gaze and perception in what the camera’s lens set out to capture.
