FEAST DAY OF ST. MARY MAGDALENE St. Mary Magdalene is one of the greatest saints of the Bible and a legendary example of God's mercy and grace. The precise dates of her birth and death are unknown, but we do know she was present with Christ during his public ministry, death and resurrec- tion. She is mentioned at least a dozen times in the . For many years, Mary Magdalene was regarded as a sexually immoral person, but this is not supported in the scriptures. The Gospels agree that Mary was originally a great sin- ner. Jesus cast seven demons out of her when he met her. After this, she told several women she associated with and these women also became followers. What Mary did in her subsequent life, after meeting Jesus, is significant. She was cer- tainly a sinner whom Jesus saved, giving us an example of how no person is beyond Mercy means… the saving grace of God. During Jesus' ministry, it is believed that Mary Magdalene fol- lowed him, part of a semi-permanent entourage who served Jesus and his Disciples. Mary was present when Christ rose from the dead, visiting his tomb to anoint his body only to find the stone rolled away and Christ, very much alive, sitting at the place they laid Him. She was the first witness to His resurrection. After the death of Christ, legend states that she remained among the early Christians and spent the remaining years of her life living in southern France. St. Mary Magdalene's feast day is July 22. She is the patroness of converts, repentant 4 sinners, sexual temptation, pharmacists, tanners, women, and many other causes. We would like to theme the three years with the following broadstrokes. During the first year, look at myself, my relationships and my interactions with God. In the second year, look at the person of Jesus. Who is He, what He did and our calling to discipleship. In the third year, look at the church as a response to our discipleship, and our call to service.

Holy Family Men’s Reading Group

August 16, 2016, 7:00 p.m., Guadalupe Room

We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Even if you do not read the books, you are welcome to join us for wine, appetizers, and good fellowship!

This month will be discussing The Street Lawyer, a legal thriller novel by John Grisham. It was Grisham's ninth novel.

Michael Brock is billing the hours, making the money, rushing relentlessly to the top of Drake & Sweeney, a giant D.C. law firm. One step away from partnership, Michael has it all. Then, in an instant, it all comes undone: Aa homeless man takes nine lawyers hostage in the firm’s plush offices. When it’s all over, the man’s blood is splattered on Michael’s face—and suddenly Michael is willing to do the unthinkable. Rediscovering a conscience, he lost long ago, Michael is leaving the big time for the streets where his attacker once lived—and where society’s powerless need an advocate for justice. But there’s one break Michael cannot t make—from a secret that has floated up from the depths of Drake & Sweeney, from a confidential file that is now in Michael’s hands, and from a conspiracy that has already taken lives. Now Michael’s former partners are about to become his bitter enemies. Because to them, Michael Brock is the most dangerous man on the streets.

Tues, 8-2-16, 7 pm, Guadalupe Rm, to discuss Dorothy Day’s autobiography

We meet monthly, on first Tuesdays, and all books are in the parish bookstore. Even if you haven’t read the book, come make new friends & enjoy wine, snacks, & lively exchange.

Dorothy Day (1891-1980), a devout convert to Catholicism, was a social activist, American journalist, and founder of the newspaper The Catholic Worker with her friend Peter Maurin. They advocated nonviolence, simple living, and aid for the poor. The "long loneliness" is what Day often experienced as a child, young adult, and in her two common-law marriages. Only her conversion to Roman Catholicism and experience in communities with the poor were able to cure her loneliness. Day also argues throughout the book that the "long loneliness" is universal in human experience and can only be cured by community life.
