HERZOG, A. BENNETT HENNESSEY, MICHAEL KESSLER and VI´CTOR H. GARCI´A-SOLI´Z Summary Since their description in the first half of the 20th century by M. A. Carriker, Bolivian Recurvebill Simoxenops striatus and Yungas Antwren Myrmotherula grisea have been regarded as extremely poorly known endemics of the Bolivian Yungas and adjacent humid foothill forests. They are considered ‘Vulnerable’ under the IUCN criteria of small population, predicted population decline (criterion C2a) and, in the case of Bolivian Recurvebill, small extent of occurrence (criteria B1a+b). Here we summarise the information published to date and present extensive new data on the distribution (including the first records for extreme southeast Peru), natural history, population size and conservation status of both species based on field work in the Bolivian Andes over the past 12 years. Both species primarily inhabit the understorey of primary and mid-aged to older regenerating forest and regularly join mixed-species foraging flocks of insectivorous birds. Bolivian Recurvebill has a strong preference for Guadua bamboo, but it is not an obligate bamboo specialist and persists at often much lower densities in forests without Guadua. Yungas Antwren seems to have a preference for dense, structurally complex under- storey, often with Chusquea bamboo. Both species are distributed much more continuously at altitudes of mostly 600–1,500 m, occupy a greater variety of forest types (wet, humid, semi- deciduous forest) and have a much greater population size than previously thought. -

Accepted on 21 May 2014. urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:5BE6C9E6-0E54-497E-84B8-90766A7A5A54, June 2014 ABSTRACT: A new species of treehunter, Cichlocolaptes mazarbarnetti sp. nov., is described from a specimen that for many years had been confused with Philydor novaesi. The morphology of this specimen, collected in 1986 at Pedra Branca, Murici, Alagoas, at 550 m elevation (currently the Murici Ecological Station), suggests its allocation in the genus Cichlocolaptes. The new species differs from P. novaesi by its considerably larger size, heavier body-mass, darker and more uniform forehead and crown, absence of buffy periocular- feathers, and a pale orange-rufous tail that contrasts with the rump and the rest of the dorsal plumage. It also has a flat-crowned appearance and a larger, deeper-based, and generally stouter bill. Behavioral specialization on bromeliads and vocal repertoire also suggest that the new species belongs in the genus Cichlocolaptes. The song of this species is markedly different from that of P. novaesi, and it closely matches that of Cichlocolaptes leucophrus. The new species is endemic to the ‘Pernambuco Center’ of endemism, where it inhabits dense, humid forests in hilly terrain. -

With only 28% of the original vegetation left, mostly fragmented and altered, the Atlantic Forest is a hotspot for bird conservation. We first introduce the extent, vegetation types, and exploitation history of the domain, and the composition and biogeographic affinities of its birds. We then provide an overview of the knowledge gathered so far on the ways Atlantic Forest birds thrive in the often-fragmented landscape, highlighting the landscape features that influence their occurrence and movement behavior. We end with the conser- vation issues affecting the Atlantic Forest birds and the actions hitherto taken to address them, including the establish- ment of conservation units, forest restoration, and rewilding. Brazil North Eastern Mega Birding 27th September to 18th October 2019 (22 days) Trip Report Lear’s Macaws by Stephan Lorenz Trip report compiled by Tour Leader: Stephan Lorenz Trip Report – RBL Brazil – North Eastern Mega Birding 2019 2 Tour Summary Northeast Brazil offers a combination of rare endemics and endangered specialty birds unparalleled anywhere in South America. In addition, this true to the term mega tour took us through some of the most spectacular scenery in the country, from the stark caatinga and inselbergs in the north through the rugged cliffs of the Chapada Diamantina and finally to the lush Atlantic rainforest in the coastal areas of Bahia. In between, we birded in marshy grasslands, thorn scrub, intact cerrado, remnant forests on remote hill tops, montane forest, and finally lush lowland rain forest. Our 5600- kilometre journey offered one the grandest birding adventures anywhere. The birds were even more spectacular than the landscape with the top four sightings as chosen by participants offering a good overview of Brazil’s diversity: 1. Lear's Macaw, 2. Giant Snipe, 3. Blue-eyed Ground Dove, and 4. Banded Cotinga with honorable mentions Giant Snipe by Stephan Lorenz given to Black-and-white Hawk Eagle, Ringed Woodpecker, Hook-billed Hermit, Horned Sungem, Hyacinth Visorbearer, Toco Toucan, Henna-capped Foliage-gleaner, Cipo Canastero, White-bibbed Antbird, White-browed Antpitta, and Blue Manakin. The depth-dependent anisotropic structure of the lithosphere under the Borborema Province of northeast Brazil has been investigated through harmonic stripping of receiver functions developed at 39 stations in the region. This method retrieves the first (k=1) and second (k=2) degree harmonics of a receiver function dataset, which characterize seismic anisotropy beneath 5 a seismic station. Anisotropic fabrics are in turn directly related to the deformation of the lithosphere from past and current tec- tonic processes. Our results reveal the presence of anisotropy within the crust and the lithospheric mantle throughout the entire Province, with the exception of a few stations in the continental interior that lack evidence for any anisotropic signatures. Most stations in the continental interior report consistent anisotropic orientations in the crust and lithospheric mantle, suggesting a dominant NE-SW pervasive deformation along lithospheric-scale shear zones developed during the Brasiliano-Pan African 10 orogeny. -

Nesse sentido, buscou-se entender as dinâmicas ambientais na formação do relevo nordestino. Dessa forma, o artigo de por objetivos reconhecer as mudanças ambientas e caracterizar os macrocompartimentos do Nordeste setentrional. Na condução do estudo foram realizados levantamentos bibliográficos, documentais, cartográficos e trabalho de campo. Tendo como resultados a caracterização dos seguintes macrocompartimentos: Costa do Nordeste setentrional, Planície costeira, Tabuleiros costeiros, Depressão sertaneja setentrional, Planalto da Borborema, Chapada do Apodi e Chapada do Araripe. Foi possível observar que esses macrocompartimentos estão condicionados à diferentes dinâmicas e resultando diferentes feições. Palavras-Chave: Geomorfologia. Caracterização geomorfológica.
