Kirby Manià 4 Abstract This thesis adopts a contrapuntal reading of Johannesburg through the work of Ivan Vladislavić. While it evaluates the dominant and pervasive readings of the city in current and historical scholarship, carefully considering the way in which its gold-mining origins have shaped a city that is dominated by a culture of surface, violence, and socio-historical amnesia, it ultimately aims to show how Vladislavić’s fiction subverts and challenges these prevailing means of perceiving Johannesburg. As part of inaugurating a depth reading of the city, Vladislavić sets about defamiliarising both the textual and urban landscape as a means of engendering a momentary state of lostness. The experience of lostness means that habitual markers are no longer able to guide or provide comfort to the textual and urban navigator. As a result, lostness dislodges accustomed ways of seeing, reading, and writing the city, thus allowing for both textual and urban rediscovery to ensue. The abandonment of conventions of meaning allows Vladislavić to render the city afresh. What his depictions reveal are the less commonly noticed aspects of Johannesburg city-life – in other words, what lies beneath its culture of surface. This depth reading uncovers a variety of palimpsests of both an urban and natural variety. Moreover, in this process, nature, something we tend to view as peripheral to the urban environment, is exposed and shown to exist in the shadows of the postcolonial city – haunting culture. This revelation ultimately deconstructs Johannesburg’s often paranoid culture of surface and proffers the ameliorative alternatives of natural flow, provisionality, and flux. Kirby Manià 5 Dedication: La Città d’Oro I dedicate this thesis to my late grandmother, my Nonna, who left post-WWII Italy eight months pregnant with my father to come to South Africa for a better life. Three weeks after arriving in Johannesburg she gave birth to my father. At the time she spoke no English, had very little money, no home, a toddler in tow, and another baby on the way. She came to join my grandfather, who, in putting his wartime aeronautical experience to good use, had found factory work, first in Port Elizabeth and then Johannesburg. Having experienced fascist Italy for most of her life, and upon arriving in a country mired by its own despotic, segregative politics, she decried this move from one dictatorship to another. It was something she held against my grandfather for all of his life, and the rest of hers. My grandparents were decidedly working-class, and while many white middle-class women of the time lived a life of leisure, my grandmother worked many long hours as a seamstress (sewing clothes for wealthier women) to help support the family. She taught herself English, and many years later, regaled my sister and I with colourful accounts of embarrassing linguistic misadventures – all drenched in the musicality of her thick Bolognese accent. She had always wanted to study further to become a teacher, but war and Italian gender-politics insisted that she leave school at the age of fifteen to find work to help support her parents. And so it seems that both education and the English language were important tools for success – at least from her vantage point. In retrospect, it makes sense that I have dedicated my life to both the field of education as well as the academic pursuit of English Literature. On her deathbed, just over a year ago, she told me that she did not want her death to interfere with my doctoral studies. It was an unexpectedly selfless thing to say at the time, but completely in character for a woman whose life evinced her admirable magnanimity, compassion, verve, and resilience. For these reasons, she has always been, and continues to be, an inspiration to me.     1 TIME TO TALK: LITERARY MAGAZINES IN THE PRETORIA- JOHANNESBURG REGION, 1956 TO 1978. Michael Gardiner INTRODUCTION Between 1956 and 1978, in the region of Pretoria and Johannesburg, numbers of literary magazines were published, many devoted to poetry. It was during this period as well that university Departments of English were faced again and again with the question of whether to include attention to South African literature or not. Furthermore, this period of South Africa’s history saw the rise and smashing of internal political resistance to the gathering and intensification of apartheid. And this history is reflected to an extent in the micro-histories of the literary magazines of this period. My interests in exploring literary magazines from this period are literary, political and personal. The personal aspect is based upon knowing first-hand many of the people mentioned here, and I have read much of what they have written subsequently. The group with which I am least acquainted is that which formed around the magazine Wurm, but a core of which became involved in Ophir and Izwi. Of the editorial figures involved in this study, Nat Nakasa, Jack Cope, Ridley Beeton, Bill Maxwell-Mahon, Barney Simon and Guy Butler are no longer alive. Mike Kirkwood now lives in Britain, and Walter Saunders lives in France. Both are readily accessible. This discussion refers in varying degrees of detail to The Purple Renoster, Contrast, Unisa English Studies (because of its attention to contemporary South African poetry), New Coin Poetry, The Classic, Wurm, Ophir, Kol and Izwi, plus the abruptly terminated Donga and its even more abruptly terminated successor, Inspan.

Licking the Stage Clean or Hauling Down the Sky?: The Profile of the Poet and the Politics of Poetry in Contemporary South Africa Kelwyn Sole Poetry and Political Issues after 1994 It is easy to presume that literature plays something of a minor public role in a postcolonial context such as South Africa, and thereafter to assume that, within the domain of literature, the importance afforded poetry must be marginal. This has a degree of accuracy. In a relatively undeveloped publishing and reviewing environment, there is certainly a socially less “well-defined marginal position … (and) clear space” from which poets write than exists in metropolitan countries; a fact that causes local poets some despondency.1 However, it can be suggested that one of the paradoxical consequences of this has been that poets regularly take on a social position that would be regarded as unusual in those developed countries where the relative autonomy of the “poetic space” is circumscribed by the expectations and pressures of the literature industry, which has in effect acted to limit the scope of poets’ role as active and meaningful social agents. One of the most puzzling, if compelling, aspects of recent poetry in Eng- lish in South Africa has been the way in which it has engaged with, reflected upon, and tried to influence ongoing processes in the country’s wider sociocultural and political life.

    "The Heart in Exile": South African Poetry in English, 1990-95 LEON DE KOCK WITH IAN TROMP A X XLTHOUGH THE YEARS of democratic transition in South Africa, 1990-95, have seen rapid changes in political and intel• lectual life, these years have also been witness to the after-effects of a demented national life under apartheid. VVhile politicians scurried about at the World Trade Centre, bartering rights for privileges, ordinary people and the country's institutions strug• gled to develop new modes of feeling and action. The country's poets also vigorously sought a bigger, less embattled space in which to work the perceived new realities into changing forms of expression. While it may be true to say that inspiring transforma• tions have indeed occurred, it is also trae that no one in South Africa escaped apartheid and its deep scarring of cultural life— neither liberals nor radicals, nor people of any other inclination. For many decades, supposedly liberal departments of English silently colluded with the "regime" by firmly repressing a full, open representation of the nation's literary life on their sylla• buses, preferring instead to maintain narrowly Anglocentric and politically "neutral" curricula, while so-called liberal newspapers ran "Africa" editions for black readers, full of crudely sensa• tionalized stories depicting what they imagined was the "town• ship life" they never bothered to discover for themselves. Even the progressive, left-wing intelligentsia who promoted the cul• tural boycott of the 1980s, and those of us who imagined we were working from within to undermine the system, somehow co• operated in the construction of a suffocating intellectual life defined by the most cramping of dualisms.

About the poet Lionel Abrahams (11 April 1928 – 31 May 2004) was a South African novelist, poet, editor, critic, essayist and publisher. He was born in Johannesburg, where he lived his entire life. He was born with cerebral palsy and had to use a wheelchair until 11 years of age. Best known for his poetry, he was mentored by Herman Charles Bosman, and he and later edited seven volumes of Bosman's posthumously published works. Abrahams went on to become one of the most influential figures in South African literature in his own right, publishing numerous poems, essays, and two novels. Through Renoster Books, which he started in 1956, he published works by Oswald Mtshali and Mongane Wally Serote heralding the emergence of black poetry during the apartheid era. In 1986, he married Jane Fox. That year, he was awarded honorary doctorates of literature by the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Natal.

Resistance writing aims to break down the assumed division between art and politics. and in this view literature becomes an arena of conflict and struggle. This dissertation examines certain aspects of the poetry of Mongane Wally Serote in order to explore the relationship between aesthetics and resistance in his writing. Over the last two decades, Serote has made a significant contribution to the development of South African literature, and his work has important implications for literary criticism in South Africa. Chapter Llooks at some of these implications by discussing the concept of resistance literature and the main issues arising from the debates and polemics surrounding the work of Serote and other black political writers. Perhaps the most important here is the need to construct a critical approach to South African resistance literature that can come to terms with both its aesthetic qualities and political effects.
