WORLD DAY - DIABETESDAY

World Diabetes Day (WDD)

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is announced by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) jointly. The basis for this focus is the growing menace of the diabetes epidemic in global proportions. WDD became a official United Nations Day in 2006 while first WDD was celebrated in 1991. The day of the year is usually taken as 14 th of November every year. The reason being that November 14 th is the birthday of the Sir who is the co- discoverer of with Charles Best.

WDD is the most expansive awareness program at a global level. It is estimated to reach over a 1 billion people in more than 160 countries. It is anticipated that this will keep the awareness of the menacing epidemic of diabetes in the public and political mindset.

The Objectives of the World Diabetes Day are :

Promote IDF advocacy efforts throughout the year. To be the global driver to promote the importance of taking coordinated and concerted actions to confront diabetes as a critical global health issue.

The official logo is a blue circle which was adopted in 2007. It is the symbol of awareness of diabetes globally. It also underlines the unity of purpose of the global diabetes community facing the diabetic epidemic.

Annually the World Diabetes Day campaign focuses on a dedicated theme that runs for one or more years. The theme for World Diabetes Day 2018-19 is Family and Diabetes.

Past campaigns:

World Diabetes Day 2017: Women and Diabetes

WHY FAMILY AND DIABETES A two-year time frame has been chosen to best facilitate planning, development, promotion and participation. Materials and actions that IDF will develop over the two years of the campaign will aim to: Raise awareness of the impact that diabetes has on the family and support network of those affected. Promote the role of the family in the management, care, prevention and education of diabetes. i. DM has an impact on the patient - apart from diabetes itself ii. The diabetes is also an emotional disorder iii. The emotional health of a diabetic is very closely entwined with family iv. Family itself has much impact from the diabetes of family member v. Family fiances is just one aspect of the devastating story of impact of diabetes on family vi. Some more quantifiable impacts are diabetic persons' disability to function in their day to day roles vii. Some more quantifiable impacts are diabetic persons' diminishing social interactions their day to day lives ix. While the disease of diabetes is understood by everybody the illness of the diabetes ie the socio- psychological impact of the disease on the person and the family is less understood or even appreciated x. Is it necessary ? Yes of course because diabetes in the modern medicine is considered to be a true bio-psycho-social entity

PCDG - DINISA - DIABETES - FAMILY

PCDG started the world diabetes day celebrations in fact 1 month before. That is because PCDG had the inaugural DINISA on October 28th at NUGASEVANA of BMICH. DINISA is a unique concept. It is an acronym for DIyavediya NIroginge S Ayanaya which in English is Diabetes health Patients' Clinic. So the first difference we have from all other initiatives is that diabetes is a disease but no diabetic should ever suffer from an illness due to any impact of the disease diabetes on their lives. The main reason for this shift in focus is because nearly 40-50% of diabetics suffer some form of emotional ill health. It is very obvious that once cannot be emotional in a vacuum. It needs the incubator of the person's immediate environment - family, coworkers, friends and neighbors etc. So the focus of current word diabetes day's theme is quite aligned with what the PCDG has organized through the DINISA which is in fact a 5 year program.
