9 1 2 FUND FOR THE ARTS ANNUAL REPORT IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE ARTS, IT’S ABOUT WHAT THE ARTS DO FOR OUR COMMUNITY Mural Artwork by Kacy Jackson CELEBRATING OUR 70TH YEAR WITH YOU - AND BECAUSE OF YOU! LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO How do you measure a year? Not only is that a brilliantly written song from the Broadway hit “Rent,” it’s a profoundly difficult question to answer- unless you’ve had a year like ours! Together, in our 70th year, we have re-examined, re-focused, and re-purposed ourselves into a more inclusive, robust, and capacity building organization, steering your generous dollars into critical operating grants, educational workshops, engaging programs, inclusive initiatives, and fueling impact in every local zip code. Thanks to nearly 15,000 donors, we raised more than $8.4 million in our 2019 campaign. Fund for the Arts and our Arts Partners served more than 2.1 million people throughout our region through more than 700 impactful grants, drove educational initiatives in and out of schools, created new levels of access to art opportunities across Greater Louisville, led diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, and helped build the capacity of our arts partners across the sector. In this report, you will see how we are focusing your dollars on the five priorities of the community’s cultural plan Imagine Greater Louisville 2020: ensuring arts access, building the capacity of our arts and culture community, education, equity, diversity and inclusion, and promoting Greater Louisville as a world-class arts and culture destination. Most importantly, I hope you’ll feel a sense of pride in your contribution, along with our most sincere gratitude for your generosity. Your critical support is the backbone of our work and an asset to our community. This year, the Cultural Pass was used for more than 39,000 visits, with low-income children accounting for 14,000 of those visits. Participation by low-income children increased 44 percent from the previous year. “Cultural Pass gets us out more. You sometimes think ‘Zoo and Science Center.’ We have memberships to the Zoo and Science Center. So it’s, pretty day, the zoo, bad day we go to the Science Center. So, the Cultural Pass offers a lot more. It’s educational. We’ve explored the city more. We didn’t even know what Portland was—we’d never been to Portland. We love the Cultural Pass.” –Katie, mother of 4 CULTIVATION OF OUR CREATIVE PROFESSIONALS We aspire for Greater Louisville to be a magnet for arts and creative professionals, where arts and culture organizations and creative industries, both institutional and emerging, are thriving. We support and cultivate arts and culture organizations and artists to ensure the ability to deliver a greater impact to the community. Fund for the Arts is working to build the capacity of these creative professionals and organizations by creating connections to expertise, networks, board development, and leadership. Fund for the Arts hosts the nationally recognized NeXt emerging leader program to develop a strong pipeline to board leadership within our arts and culture community. In this year, the Fund for the Arts delivered capacity building opportunities such as the nationally acclaimed emcArts Artists as Social Change workshop, Philadelphia Mural Arts workshop and monthly lunch and learn events with local experts in fields from social media to advocacy, board governance to fundraising. In 2019, the Fund for the Arts supported the creative sector financially with grants, scholarships, and earned revenue opportunities. Arts and Culture Grants to Artists, Organizations, Artists 95 Organizations 96 742 Community Organizations and Schools Project grants provided opportunities for artists and organizations to deliver impact across the region, and Sustaining Impact Grants provided critical operating support to 23 organizations, nearly double the number from two years ago. These organizations range from our largest anchor institutions such as the Speed Art Museum, Actors Theatre and Louisville Orchestra to some of our small neighborhood and youth organizations such as River City Drum Corp, Louisville Story Program and Squallis Puppeteers. "We believe that music and performing have enhanced our son's ability to make connections and draw from his experiences. His confidence in these areas has increased with his involvement with the River City Drum Corp., and being placed in an academic and social environment with peers and adults who consistently support, encourage and challenge him." — River City Drum Corp.
