  • Pixar OnwardReview
Pixar Onward Review By: Michelle Cisneros The latest animated film Onward joins the rest of Pixar’s high ranking and tear-jerking productions. The movie is set in a fictional world whose past was filled with magic and spells, but is now dependent on the convenience of modern technology. The movie focuses on two blue-skinned elf brothers and their quest to get to spend one more day with their deceased father. Ian Lightfoot (played by rising star Tom Holland) is the youngest brother, a shy and timid teen who often compares himself to his late father who had confidence, which Ian lacks. Though never having met his father, we see that he plays an important role in Ian’s life: often wearing his father’s old clothing, has photos of him all over his bedroom, and listens to old cassettes of his voice. Ian’s older brother Barley (voiced by Guardian of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt) is the complete opposite, he is fearless and is often judged by the people around him for trying to bring magic back. On Ian’s 16th birthday, he receives a very special gift from his dad. To Ian and his mother’s confusion (and Barley’s amazement), it is a wooden staff with a magical spell that will allow him to conjure him back till next sundown. After hours of attempting, Ian is able to get only the bottom half of their dad back, from the waistband down. Both brothers agree to go off on a quest in hopes of finding another magic stone in order to get the other half of their dad.

  • Not Your Typical Knight: the Emerging On-Screen Defender
Not Your Typical Knight: The Emerging On-Screen Defender Sean Connery epitomizes the strong, handsome, aristocratic, ath- letic, valiant, and virtuous (almost picture-perfect) medieval knight of the movies whose nobility is shown in scene after scene. This hero is the gentle yet powerful leader who protects and helps those in need and, despite the great odds against him, wins because he represents justice. Over the last two decades or so, depictions of on-screen heroic medieval knights have shifted to include a variety of alternatives. These charac- terizations range from the aristocratic, almost pristine Lancelot of Excal- ibur (1981), to the disinherited Robin, his foreign friend Azeem, and, briefly, an armored Marian of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991), the mercenary Lancelot of First Knight (1995), William Thatcher, the peas- ant squire and would-be knight of A Knight's Tale (2002), an ogre, fight- ing princess, and tallung donkey in the animated tale Shrek (2001), and finally the modern medieval "knights" Buffy, Giles, Xander, and Willow of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television series (1997 through 2003). These changing portrayals of knights and heroes show us on-screen defenders who rarely fit the picture of traditional medieval knights and thus challenge our definitions of what constitutes a knight or hero. The on-screen traditional medieval hero derlves from heroes of medieval literature such as King Arthur, Su Gawain, Sir Lancelot, and Sir Galahad. The medieval heroes are set apart from their enemies by their brawny physiques, their devotions to God, king, and lady, and their fightlng abilities-which are used to promote justlce.

  • Press Release
Press release CaixaForum Madrid From 21 March to 22 June 2014 Press release CaixaForum Madrid hosts the first presentation in Spain of a show devoted to the history of a studio that revolutionised the world of animated film “The art challenges the technology. Technology inspires the art.” That is how John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer at Pixar Animation Studios, sums up the spirit of the US company that marked a turning-point in the film world with its innovations in computer animation. This is a medium that is at once extraordinarily liberating and extraordinarily challenging, since everything, down to the smallest detail, must be created from nothing. Pixar: 25 Years of Animation casts its spotlight on the challenges posed by computer animation, based on some of the most memorable films created by the studio. Taking three key elements in the creation of animated films –the characters, the stories and the worlds that are created– the exhibition reveals the entire production process, from initial idea to the creation of worlds full of sounds, textures, music and light. Pixar: 25 Years of Animation traces the company’s most outstanding technical and artistic achievements since its first shorts in the 1980s, whilst also enabling visitors to discover more about the production process behind the first 12 Pixar feature films through 402 pieces, including drawings, “colorscripts”, models, videos and installations. Pixar: 25 Years of Animation . Organised and produced by : Pixar Animation Studios in cooperation with ”la Caixa” Foundation. Curator : Elyse Klaidman, Director, Pixar University and Archive at Pixar Animation Studios. Place : CaixaForum Madrid (Paseo del Prado, 36).
