Research Interests During the past years at Oxford University I have focused my research along three main directions: (i) the understanding of the equation of state (EOS) of highly compressed matter, as found in interior or giant planets and in the crust of old stars, as well as in inertial fusion energy experiments; (ii) the development of novel experimental techniques to simulate cosmological shock waves in the laboratory; and (iii) the possibility of using a combination of different light sources such as ultra- intense and free electron lasers to experimentally test the coupling of gravity and quantum mechanics. I have been leading the x-ray scattering work to study the microscopic properties of warm dense matter, and in particular I have been using such techniques to look at the atomic correlations arising in warm dense hydrogen, lithium and carbon. We have also measured, for the first time, self-generated magnetic fields in laboratory shocks and related them to -galactic structure formation. Our group is internationally regarded as one of the major player in the field. Through my secondment at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and the participation in the HiPER program (the EU proposal for a fusion facility) I have been active in the inertial confinement fusion community and put forward the work on the hydrogen EOS. So far, most of the experimental work has been conducted at large scale facilities (both nationally and oversea). In the near term, I plan to fully commission a small-scale laser laboratory here in Oxford to carry on basic research – especially on points (i) and (ii) above – in order to provide the necessary preparation and readiness for the limited access at large-scale laser facilities. The work on EOS/Fusion energy and laboratory astrophysics has been funded by research grants from the UK Research Councils and the European Research Council, as well as collaborations with AWE plc. and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (US).
