  • Buck Owens Obituary
Obituary of Buck Owens: March 27, 2006 By: Dave Hoekstra Buck Owens was more than a voice in country music. He was an American metaphor for the clarion of possibility after The Grapes of Wrath migration to California. Alvin Edgar "Buck" Owens was a honky-tonk singer, a TV star -- best known for his role in "Hee-Haw" -- and an entrepreneur who owned radio and television stations in Bakersfield, Calif. He was a good soul, one who would fly from Bakersfield to Portland, Ore., as he did in March 2005 to surprise compatriot Merle Haggard, who was opening for Bob Dylan. The depth of the moment was understood. With Mr. Owens standing stage right in a resplendent brown and black cowboy jacket, Dylan took a chance on Haggard's "Sing Me Back Home." Mr. Owens died Saturday at home in Bakersfield. He was 76. On Sunday, CMT.com reported the cause of death as a heart attack. He grew old, but his songs never became tired. In recent years he stopped touring outside of California, but he still managed to capture a new generation of fans that included Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earle and the Bottle Rockets. In the late 1990s, John Soss of Chicago's Jam Productions held an annual Buck Owens birthday party at Schubas that featured artists as diverse as soul singers Otis Clay and Mavis Staples, and country-rocker Jon Langford. Mr. Owens crossed borders he never would have dreamed of as a child when he headed west with his sharecropper parents from the Red River Valley near Sherman, Texas.

  • NEW RELEASE for the Week of January 22, 2021 PRIORITIES & HIGHLIGHTS >> Pre-Order Now!
NEW RELEASE for the week of January 22, 2021 PRIORITIES & HIGHLIGHTS >> Pre-Order Now! ANTLERS "Green To Gold" (ANTI) 87800 LP/ CD ANTLERS "Green To Gold (indie (ANTI) 87800INDIE LP shop version/tan)" March 26 street date. "Green To Gold" is the much-anticipated new album from New York based Indie/Folk band The Antlers. Perhaps what distinguishes "Green To Gold" from the rest of The Antlers' canon is its, well, sunniness. Conceived and written almost entirely in the morning hours, "Green To Gold" is the band's first new music in nearly seven years, and easily their most luminous to date. The brighter outlook emerged, paradoxically, after a succession of ominous events. In 2015, Silberman suffered with an auditory condition that made touring near impossible and he retreated to the quiet of upstate New York to heal. His return in 2017 with a solo album was short lived when he was diagnosed with lesions on his vocal chords, which required surgery and again a quiet rest and recovery period. Singer and primary songwriter Peter Silberman explains. "I took these health obstacles as a sign that I should change course for a little while. I hadn't made a full stop like that since The Antlers began. I think the shift in tone is the result of getting older. It doesn't make sense for me to try to tap into the same energy that I did ten or fifteen years ago, because I continue to grow as a person, as I'm sure our audience does too. "Green To Gold" is about this idea of gradual change".

12 Years Of Recording Dwight Yoakam, Dusty Wakeman 6/16/10 9:39 AM 12 Years Of Recording Dwight Yoakam Dusty Wakeman email print ShareThis rss Ron told me of plans to record a country and cowpunk compilation and asked if I wanted to be the engineer, which, being Texas born-n- bred, I jumped on. Pete Anderson walked in the door and we really hit it off. Dwight was in the process of getting signed and had already released the EP version of Guitars . ., which was creating quite a buzz. They were opening for bands like X, Los Lobos, and The Blasters, and really connecting with those crowds. The plan was to go in and cut four more tracks to complete the album. There was some controversy with the label — Warner Nashville — who wanted Dwight to go to Nashville and work with “the establishment” there. There have been scores of great records recorded there that we all love, but this was the tail end of the Urban Cowboy era, and most everything coming out of Nashville at that moment was pretty wimpy and formulaic. Pete liked me because I was coming from a rock background but knew and loved classic country. He had Dwight drop by Mad Dog to meet me while working on Town South of Bakersfield. I remember Dwight and Pete looking at the 2-track and being impressed with how hot the recording levels were. GUITARS, CADILLACS, ETC. ETC. We were booked into Capitol Studio B for something like three days, as I recall, to cut four tracks: “Honky Tonk Man,” “Guitars, Cadillacs,” “Bury Me” (a duet with Maria McKee), and “Heartaches by the Number.” We were like kids in a candy store — we kept waiting for some adult to come and stop the fun.

In the fair city of Detroit, nestled among the garage- rock nooks and country crannies, lurks the music of Blanche. Husband and wife Dan and Tracee Miller trade intense and haunting vocals over an uneasy sea of pedal steel, banjo, raw guitar sounds, and sparse, driving drumming. The moods created in the songs seem to define Blanche. Some songs are sad and pretty, while others have a powerful, spooky feel. The melodies trick you into singing along with tales of superstitions, garbage picking, fading trust, and feelings of lost hope. The sound combines the intense desperation of the Gun Club, the sincere sadness of the Carter Family, and the creepy playfulness of Lee Hazlewood Intro taken from the biography on the Blanche website which is well worth a visit and a wonderful design. www.blanchemusic.com INTERVIEW BY STEVE RAPID | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RONNIE NORTON Tell us what the secret of Little Amber Bottles is? • Dwight Yoakam
22 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NOVEMBER 29, 2011 BOULEVARD CASINO PRESENTS DWIGHT YOAKAM LIVE AT THE RED ROBINSON SHOW THEATRE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3 Coquitlam, BC – Much had been made that Kentucky-born, Ohio-raised Dwight Yoakam was too country for Nashville when he first sought out his musical fortune in the mid-80’s but the truth is his music has always been too unique, too ruggedly individualistic to fit neatly into any one box. Like the icons he so admires – Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens – Yoakam is one of a kind. He has taken his influences and filtered them into his own potent blend of country and rock that honours his forebearers and yet creates something beautifully new … a sound all his own. Yoakam has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide placing him in an elite class of global superstars. He has twelve gold albums and nine platinum/multi-platinum albums … including the triple platinum This Time. Five of those albums have topped Billboard’s Country Albums charts with another seven landing in the Top 10. More than thirty singles have charted with eighteen reaching the Top 20 including his hits “Honky Tonk Man”, “Please, Please Baby”, “Little Ways”, “I Sang Dixie”, “It Only Hurts When I Cry”, “Fast as You” and “Thousand Miles from Nowhere”. In addition, he has won two Grammy Awards and has earned a staggering twenty-one nominations. Dwight Yoakam will be performing for one night only at Boulevard Casino’s Red Robinson Show Theatre on February 3, 2012. • Dwight Yoakam
2008 Induction Class Dwight Yoakam With his stripped-down approach to traditional honky tonk and Bakersfield country, Dwight Yoakam helped return country music to its roots in the late '80s. Like his idols Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and Hank Williams, Yoakam never played by Nashville's roots; consequently, he never dominated the charts like his contemporary Randy Travis. Then again, Travis never played around with the sound and style of country music like Yoakam. On each of his records, he twists around the form enough to make it seem like he doesn't respect all of country's traditions. Appropriately, his core audience was composed mainly of roots rock and rock & roll fans, not the mainstream country audience. Nevertheless, he was frequently able to chart in the country Top Ten, and he remained one of the most respected and adventurous recording country artists well into the '90s. Born in Kentucky but raised in Ohio, Yoakam learned how to play guitar at the age of six. As a child, he listened to his mother's record collection, honing in on the traditional country of Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, as well as the Bakersfield honky tonk of Buck Owens. When he was in high school, Yoakam played with a variety of bands, playing everything from country to rock & roll. After completing high school, Yoakam briefly attended Ohio State University, but he dropped out and moved to Nashville in the late '70s with the intent of becoming a recording artist. At the time he moved to Nashville, the town was in the throes of the pop-oriented urban cowboy movement and had no interested in his updated honky tonk.
