Highlights of Board Meetings held in January 2004

January 13th regular meeting

• Warren Hingley, staff and students from Niakwa Place School made a presentation about the national award that they received from NIS (Network of Innovative Schools) with regard to the use of Information and Communications Technology in the school. • The Board of Trustees received as information a list of divisional administrators who attended the Association of School Superintendents’ Symposium on Aboriginal Education and endorsed the creation of a Superintendent’s Advisory Committee for Aboriginal Education. • School Community Initiative Projects - Grants • Victor H. L. Wyatt School received a grant of $1535.00 for Early Literacy initiatives. • St. George School received a grant of $2,000.00 for the Enhancement of Student Social Emotional Wellbeing. • J. H. Bruns, Niakwa Place, Shamrock and Island Lakes Schools received a grant of $2500.00 for their collaboration on their April Parent Symposium. • The Honourable , Minister, Education, Citizenship and Youth, wrote on December 11/03 to thank the Louis Riel School Division for hard work and commitment to the amalgamation transition. • Theresa Oswald, MLA Seine River wrote regarding the Private Member’s Statement given on November 27, 2003 in the Manitoba Legislature in regards to the Community Symposium held on November 25/03. • Ron Guarino, Principal, Dakota Collegiate wrote to honor a Dakota Collegiate staff member (Mr. Dean Favoni) receiving the MSS Volunteer Award (Manitoba Schizophrenia Society). • The Board of Trustees received the report on Playground Structures with CCA wood be received as information. Administration will continue to monitor the play structures to ensure safety; the Board will be advised if remedial work is needed; and information will be communicated as needed to school communities.

The Louis Riel School Division Board meetings are held every first and third Tuesday of the month from September to June in the offices of the Board, 900 St. Mary’s Road, at 7:00 p.m. If, from time to time, Board meeting dates need to be changed, all schools and Parent Committees will be informed. • Diane Plamondon, teacher at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé, and Philippe Habeck, teacher at Collège Béliveau, with students from both schools, gave a presentation regarding the benefits of a French Immersion education. • The report dated January 27, 2004 from the Education and Community Committee regarding the input received from the November 20th “Meet and Greet” for chairpersons of the Division’s schools’ parent organizations was received as information; a summary of the report and feedback from the January 12 Public Budget Meeting will be shared with parent councils. The Education Committee will organize a meeting with representation from parent councils in the spring of 2004 to consult on fund-raising; and student reporting. • The report dated January 27, 2004 for a planning model to continue the Mission/Vision/Motto development process, as requested by the Board of Trustees’ Education and Community Committee, was received as information and endorsed. Information will be sent to all constituent groups; the evening of April 20th is scheduled for a follow-up session for representatives to continue the conversation begun on November 25th. • The Board of Trustees of the Louis Riel School Division and the Pembina Trails School Division will extend the existing Winnipeg Technical College Memorandum of Agreement to June 30th, 2005. On July 1, 2005 the Pembina Trails School Division will become the sole shareholding school division governing Winnipeg Technical College. The Superintendents of the Divisions, in consultation with the Director of Winnipeg Technical College, will draft a special access agreement for Louis Riel School Division students who wish to enrol in Technical Vocational Programming at Winnipeg Technical College beyond July 1, 2005, subject to the agreement of the Boards of Trustees of the Louis Riel School Division and the Pembina Trails School Division. The Chairpersons of the Boards of Trustees and the Superintendents of the Louis Riel School Division and the Pembina Trails School Division will meet, when required, to address issues with respect to the conclusion of the Memorandum of Agreement at June 30, 2005.” • The Board of Trustees received the Superintendent’s Report on the transition of the Mountbatten School students. A parental consultation process was adopted and has been communicated to all Mountbatten parents. • School Community Initiative Projects - Grants • The Operation Ground Force Project at Darwin School was approved, for a grant of $1,575.00. • Support through the Public Schools Finance Board • Additional support of $3,444.00 was received for the additional framing and drywall relative to the Windsor Park Collegiate elevator project; • Additional support of $3,442.00 was received for cutting-off roof fastener penetrations and ceiling repairs relative to the Dr. Penner School gym roof replacement project.
