July 2017

Dear Parents / Carers

As we come to the end of term I have pleasure in sharing with you some of the activities in which students have been involved.

Years 11, 12 and 13 worked hard towards their public exams and conducted themselves impeccably throughout. We enjoyed celebrating with them at their Proms at The Barn at Berkeley and at Stonehouse Court Hotel. It seems no time at all since they joined us and it is wonderful to hear of the exciting aspirations they have fortheir futures. Sports Day was a great success last week and this week sees: the Art show over two days - Wednesday and Thursday, our Summer Concert on Wednesday, and Annual Sports Awards Evening on Thursday. Next week we will be hoping to visit many of our year 10 students who have found themselves placements for work experience.

In line with many other schools and public bodies we have reflected on our security over recent months. We have very few incidents of unwelcome strangers during the day and evening but feel that the time is right to improve our site security. From September our Arch entrance (Paganhill Estate) will not be open at all during the school day. Students will still be able to access until 8.50 a.m. and from 3.15 p.m. We will be adding a new gate between the Sports Centre and Reception which will ensure that no one can wander onto site during the day without signing in at reception first.

The end of the school year is a time when we say goodbye and best wishes to staff who are leaving us. In the past month we have said goodbye to Ms Phillips and Miss Crawford who along with Mr Hayden are taking up new projects next year. Mr Thompson leaves us to take up a post at Beaufort School in Gloucester and Mr Hencher at High School. Mrs Tetley retires at the end of term after years of wonderful service to the school and its students.

You will have read too that Mr Rutter retires this year. Mr Rutter has made an immeasurable contribution to since he joined in 1973. In his 44 years at the school his teaching has inspired thousands of young people, initially in PE and in more recent years in Media Studies. His contribution, however, has been far greater than teaching. As Head of House, Senior Teacher and Assistant Headteacher responsible for student welfare, he has championed and protected the most vulnerable and has ensured that children have been safe under his watch. I have been privileged to work alongside Mr Rutter and to learn from him during my time at Archway: his natural empathy with young people, his ability to cut through red tape to provide the best solutions for children and his wise counsel to staff will make him sorely missed. I can honestly say that in each of the schools in which I have worked, I have never come across a colleague who has been held in such high esteem and with such affection by so many. A real pillar of Archway’s community is retiring - we shall miss him and we wish him well.

We have not made any changes to our school uniform for September. Please refer to your child’s planner or the school website if you are unsure. Of continuing concern is the length at which a minority of girls wear skirts: our policy is that skirts should be no higher than 2 inches/5cm above the knee and we have asked Bateman’s in Stroud not to sell skirts shorter than this.

Term will end for students at 2.05pm on Friday 21st July. The contract buses which collect children from site have been advised and will collect at our earlier finish time. Students who rely on using and Marling buses should be aware that they will pick up at 2.25pm.

On behalf of the staff I hope that you have an enjoyable summer.

Yours faithfully

Colin Belford Headteacher

Young Entrepreneurs Competition Miss R O’Bryan

Archway School recently entered the Young Entrepreneurs Competition. This event involved 80 Year 9 students who took part in the first round of the competition which entailed creating an innovative business idea that could be developed and promoted to the business sector. A range of business ideas were produced with students being assisted by business coaches who helped to develop their concepts and create presentations. All students pitched their ideas and were judged by a business panel from GFirst. The winning team then progressed onto the County finals which were to be held at GCHQ. The team worked with their Young Entrepreneurs’ coach and members of Archway School English Department to really develop and refine their presentation. On the day they faced stiff opposition from , , Dean Close and Westonbirt, but their pitch was first class and resulted in them winning the overall final event. The journey Jack, Jake, Oscar, Tom and Jonah went on from product conception to competing in the final was a joy to watch and the skills they have leant will no doubt aid them in their future careers. Archway School is very grateful to GCHQ for sponsoring the Young Entrepreneurs inter-school competition and we look forward to taking part next year to defend our title. Mrs Virginia Martin, Careers Coordinator at Archway School added, “Watching the boys win the Young Entrepreneurs Competition made me wish I had joined Archway years earlier ... I never cried from joy in my last job!” The students were equally thrilled with their winning concept, saying, “Truly amazing experience to be part of, you never learn something until you do it.” Oscar “It was an amazing experience and I found the experience really fun.” Jack “A total joy to be a part of.” Tom

Year 10 Mock Interviews Mrs V Martin

Year 10 rose brilliantly to the challenge of their mock interviews which were held in the school library on the 7th and 8th June. Not only did they complete their application forms to a very high standard but they all conducted themselves in a highly professional manner during the actual interviews. The feedback from the interviewers was very positive and they were impressed at how some Year 10 students already had a clear career pathway that they would like to follow. Additionally, I was very pleased to hear from students about how beneficial they found process. With over 190 taking place over two days, I would like thank students for turning up on time, making sure the whole event ran like clockwork. Following mock interviews students will receive individual written feedback from their interviewer which can be used to update their CVs. Mock interviews are a central part of Archway’s careers programme as they help enhance students’ employability skills. As a result students are given the opportunity to have a second mock interview in Year 12. If you have questions regarding Archway careers please contact me at [email protected] Page 3

Our Untold Stories Miss R O’Bryan Year 13 Student Wins Birmingham University Photography Competition On 9th May 2017 Archway School hosted a morning of talks given by visiting speakers from 3 different minority ethnic groups in : Karen Soo representing the Chinese community, Verona Vidal representing the Afro-Caribbean community and Naisha Hussain and her mother Nasreen Akhtar representing the Asian community. The event was organised by Mrs Ridley-Marshall and Ms Coleman. The talks were based on an original project (entitled Our Untold Stories) initiated by Nasreen Akhtar 17 years ago when she worked for the Gloucestershire Library Service. The original project documented the lives and backgrounds of individuals belonging to the Chinese Community, the Asian community and the Afro-Caribbean community. The talks at Archway focused on the issues of being raised bilingually and biculturally: the challenges, the differences, the advantages. 60 Year 10 students attended the very enjoyable and fascinating talks. Archway school has produced its own Untold Stories booklet which has allowed students who come from a variety of different cultural and linguistic backgrounds to tell their stories.

Archway Afternoon Tea at Calcot Manor Mrs V Martin On Wednesday 28th June Calcot Manor threw open the doors to their 14th century barn to allow Archway School’s Year 9 Food and Nutrition students to create the perfect afternoon tea. On arrival at noon 22 GCSE students were divided into two groups and given either front of house or cooking duties. With assistance from Calcot’s master baker, Matt, students learnt how to make the most delicious carrot cake I have ever tasted! Also on the menu were fruit scones, chocolate cake, macaroons and a selection of quintessentially English sandwiches. Meanwhile, the front of house students were taught how to set up the barn’s beautiful upstairs venue so that it was suitable to host a traditional afternoon tea for 77 guests. Bunting, lavender, white linen and summer flowers transformed the barn into the perfect venue for tea and at the suggestion of the students guests were greeted with a glass of Prosecco (or sparkling water if under 18!). It was lovely to see so many Year 9 parents / carers at the event as well as other Year 9 students. Archway is very grateful to Calcot, Paul Saddler and master baker, Matt, for not only providing Year 9 students with this amazing opportunity but also enabling parents / carers and other Archway students and staff to join in such a special event. A big thank also goes to Mrs Bloodworth for working with Year 9 over the last six months to ensure they got the most out of this event. Both Mrs Bloodworth and I very much look forward to a repeat visit to Calcot with next Year 9s. Page 4 Archway News

Year 13 came away from the morning full of enthusiasm for universities they had not even considered and more assured that all their hard work will result in a secure university place.

We hope now to be able to champion one of these books at a debate, led by students, to be held at the Literary Festival in October. Many thanks to Miss Hurst and Miss Monk from the English department for leading this project, with the support of the Library. In late May the Librarian and Mrs Jowett took a small group of Student Library helpers, together with the two poetry competition winners, to the secondary school day at the Hay Festival. We had a wonderful day, listening to authors including fantasy writer Melinda Salisbury, and author Kim Slater talking about her new book 928 Miles from Home, and soaking up the inspiring atmosphere of the festival during its thirtieth year – see below.

Apprenticeships were also represented as well as seminars on key student interest such as 'The application process for Oxford/ Cambridge' and 'Student Finance'. An excellent start back to Sixth Form. Many thanks to Mrs Martin for organising the visit.

In June we welcomed well-known children’s author and poet John Dougherty to Archway. He entertained the whole of Year 7, reading from his latest collection of books, the Stinkbomb & Ketchup-Face series, and telling anecdotes and reading his poems. He also played his guitar and sang to us! Thanks to John for such an enjoyable and inspiring visit, and thanks too to Becky Buckle (Year 12) for taking some great photographs of the occasion.

Many thanks to all our student Library Helpers, especially our Desk Helpers, for all their hard work in the Library this year! Issue No 26 Page 5

This programme teams a PhD student with a group of students to give tutorials on their specialist subject and at the end of the programme the students write a 2000 word essay which is then marked to degree standard. This time our students are going to study Phylogenetics (family trees of animals by studying the fossil record). Our students had an informative and aspirational day with talks, tutorials and a tour of Pembroke College. The day included lunch in the dining hall at Pembroke College which was a bit like dining in Hogwarts! Page 6 Archway News

Artist Workshop with Tracy Spiers Modern Foreign Languages Department News Mrs H Bullock Mrs K Davies-Brenchley After returning from their exam leave, our Year 12 “Pouf!!!” What a busy 2 terms we have had in the MFL department. Art students enjoyed a workshop delivered by a local artist and illustrator Tracy Spiers. The year 8 and 9 pupils welcomed their French exchange students to England at the beginning of May where they experienced everything “English”. From the Spires of Oxford, the Quays of Gloucester and the Banksys of Bristol to cups of tea and “bangers on the bonfire”. A month later and we have just returned from a scorching time in the south of France. Thankfully, most of the French students had swimming pools and our pupils were able to cool off after a hot day exploring traditional French towns, châteaux, cafés, markets and chocolate factories. A big “merci” for 3 of our students who joined their partners in an inter school competition (canoeing, paddle boarding, cycling, running , Molky, archery and a water obstacle course). Our partner school came 1st in the county overall!! We think everyone who took part in the exchange are “winners” and are looking forward to next year!! Bonnes Vacances!

The students were introduced to Tracy’s previous and current work which ranges from illustration and colouring books to large scale murals. The students put their skills into practice through a drawing workshop led by Tracy in which they drew with a Wimereux Wow! remote controlled car amongst other things! All in all a Mrs H Pomeroy very inspiring morning in the Art department. On Friday 23rd June, 83 year 7 students (and 2 brave Year9s) were taken by the MFL department to Wimereux (near to Boulogne). Our tired and intrepid learners threw themselves into France to practise their language with the locals. A successful visit to the market ensured lunch was bought and the students made full use of their sondage to interview people – many of whom were tourists and informed them that they enjoy visiting Wimereux because of the (that day – windy!) sea air. After a tour of the town a coca was earned – every single student ordered in French from a very patient waitress. All the non-specialist staff on the trip also dazzled locals with their French skills. A quick visit to the hypermarket ensured that our Year 7 have eaten their sugar quota for the year, in one single day. We were waved quite happily away from France and returned as very accomplished linguists. Bravo Year 7! Page 8 www.archwayschool.net

Year 10 English Schools Athletics Track and Field th Cup Success – 8 in the South West Mr C Thompson

Following their success last year in the English Schools Athletics

Track and Field Cup as Year 9s, the Year 10 athletics team has again stepped up their performances.

The first round saw the team travel to the Prince of Wales

Stadium to take on schools from all over the Gloucestershire area, with the winner going to Millfield to take on the best of the South

West. The rules of the event were not so simple, with each athlete of the 14 man squad having to do two events and points were awarded on their performances, not their position. With a few changes to the original team on the day, the team rose to the challenge and delivered a win against some very tough opposition. Nathan Clift

(300 metres and triple jump) scored top out of all the athletes there, with 39 points, Levi Mathews (200 metres and triple jump) gained 38 points and Rhys Hitchings gained 37 points (long jump and hurdles). The trip to Millfield, one of the most prestigious sporting schools in the Country, was an excellent experience for the team. With outstanding facilities, the team worked hard to gain every point Y10 Athletes: Ollie Williams, Aaron Barnes, Levi Mathews, Toby Bruton, Drew Mead Day, Joe Wright, Morgan Griffiths, Rhys Hitchings, Joe Samak, Fabio possible. However, going against top private and grammar schools Caldarone, Ben Bullock, Nathan Clift, Tom Connor-Webb, Steve Mason from the whole of the South West, the challenge was far greater for and Callum Scrivens. the team. Levi Mathews was again a strong performer in the 200 metres and triple jump, picking up 38 points and Rhys Hitchings winning 37 points in his hurdles and long jump events. Overall Archway finished 8th on the day but in the bigger picture, put Archway 8th in the South West; not a bad achievement at all! The District Athletics takes place at Prince of Wales Stadium is 27th June, where the team will look to win the District Title for the 4th year running. Alongside this, all other year groups will look to be successful. Then the focus moves to Sports Day on Wednesday 5th July.

Level 3 School Games County Finals Mr C Thompson

Archway took over 40 students to represent the school in softball, archery and mountain biking at the Level 3 School Games at Hartpury College. With two softball teams, Archway were looking to challenge for the County Title having won it the previous year. Archway 1 were in Pool B and Archway 2 were in Pool A; both pools having strong opposition in which could stand in the way of the final. Archway 2 set the early pace with a convincing 8-1 win over Gloucester , but their success wasn’t to last. A 4-4 draw against Chosen Hill meant the momentum was halted, which showed in the loss to Wyedean (eventual runners up) and a 9-3 loss to Dene Magna. In the other pool, Archway 1 set the standards high with wins over Pittville, Lakers and Severn Vale and saw them tied at the top with Archway 1: Morgan Griffiths, Brandon Clow, Callum Scrivens, Joe Farmors in a winner takes all game. Archway’s experience shone through Wright, Sophie Wathen, Kanyana Mutalindwa, Olivia Selby, with an absolute fantastic display of hitting and fielding against Farmors, Cameron Lewis, Leonie Colley, Harvey Robinson, Issy Smith with an 8-0 win. and Sadie Corbett. th The 5 place playoff game for Archway 2 v Lakers saw the team get back into the swing of things, with a much improved display resulting in a comfortable win. All attention then turned to Archway 1 in the final against Wyedean. Batting first, Archway 1 was limited to four runs, leaving the game wide open as Wyedean came to the plate. Then, in a great defensive display, Archway limited Wyedean to only a single run and by doing so retained their crown. In the archery, the team were hampered by unavailability but the

strength in depth showed. With a number of students competing for the nd first time, they managed to achieve 2 place, losing out to the eventual winners by only a few points. However, two winners on the day were Rhys Hitchings and Clem O’Brien. Rhys won the Passion Award and Clem won the Teamwork Award; award winners were chosen from all competitors for displaying the School Games values. There was also success in the mountain biking. With the Year 8 and 9 teams finishing 4th, the Year 10’s quality shone through with them winning the County Title. In the individual races, Michael Crilley (Year 9) took 2nd place and Aaron Barnes (Year 10), in a strong field of bikers, took 3rd Archway 2: Drew Mead Day, Luke Windle, Steve Mason, place in the individual race. Cameron Atkins, Martha James, Niamh McQuail, Taia Young, A fantastic achievement by all competitors who participated! Lydia Wakefield, Lucy Ashby, Louis De Felice and Alfie Bradshaw. Afternoon Tea at Calcot Manor—Year 9 Food Preparation and Nutrition Mrs S Bloodworth

22 Year 9 students had a fantastic experience working with Calcot Manor to entertain 55 guests at an Afternoon Tea in The Barn at Calcot Manor on Wednesday 28th June 2017. It had all started way back in January when they were given the opportunity to apply in writing to Paul Sadler the Manager at Calcot and express why they should be selected. Each lucky and deserving student received a personal letter from Paul congratulating them on their selection, and from then on preparation work was carried out with great enthusiasm. Invitations to guests were produced, research in to the history of Afternoon Tea, as well as appropriate products and finally practising skills that would be essential on the day. Precision when organising and laying tables On arrival at Calcot the students with greeted by Paul and his team, given the necessary Health & Safety talk and then split in two groups which would swap between Front of House and working in the kitchen. It was then full steam ahead, with the Front of House led by Ollie Counsell being given a blank canvas to set up and decorate The Barn for the Afternoon Tea. Ella Light led the Kitchen Brigade in planning the food preparation. Teamwork was outstanding and they all worked with enthusiasm and a maturity beyond their years. The Front of House team had to decide table layout and design, furnish the room and lay the tables to the high standards that Calcot expect. While they were given a free reign, Paul and his team kept a watchful eye and reinforced their motto of “quality and consistency”. Students were amazed at the use of a thumbnail to measure the correct distance of the cutlery from the end of the table! In the Kitchen Matt the Baker impressed the students with his measurement of 100g – a Sandwich preparation big handful! As the students soon found out, their handful wasn’t necessarily 100g! All students were amazed by the scale and size of equipment and ingredient “bins”. They all got stuck in to making scones, chocolate cake, carrot cake, macaroons and sandwiches. Again “quality and consistency” was the name of the game! Finally everything came together and the time was fast approaching for the VIP guests to arrive – parents, carers, Archway staff and fellow Year 9 students. The room was decorated beautifully, food carefully placed on the cake stands, Prosecco (adults only) and sparkling water carefully poured to welcome the guests. How proud we all were! A huge “Well done” to all Year 9 students, a big “Thank You” to Paul and the team at Calcot and the Accuracy with the Carrot Cake mix! wonderful guests who truly were appreciative, very proud and catered for to the highest possible standard!

“The highlight was working with Matt the Baker and scooping cake mix in to the tins with our hands!” Ella Light Piping the Macaroons “It gave us an insight in to what Catering is like, which could help us in the future” Xantia Chandler “So well planned and professional” Mrs Cox “It was delightful and the tea was lovely” Mrs Ryall “What talent and creativity shown by our Year 9 students” Mrs Marsh Matt the Baker sharing his expertise
