Dr. Carrion is church planter and lead pastor of a thriving church community in the South Bronx in New York City. A scholar and strategist, he encour- aged and spoke to our group about what it looks like to bring contextualization of the gospel to our community. Of the many deep and profound things he imparted to , there was one quote that has stuck with me:

“Te dominant culture cries out, ‘Lord, your Kingdom come!’ Te oppressed culture cries out, ‘Lord, Kingdom !’”

When I look at the dominant headlines of the day, I fnd myself praying, “Lord "He will wipe away every tear from their may your Kingdom come! Set things right.” When I have sufered unfairly at the eyes, and death shall be no more, neither hands of someone else, my prayer has been “Lord, bring justice!” In other words, “Kingdom now!” Tis is the same cry I hear from victims of senseless crimes or shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor those whose family is unjustly targeted because of ethnicity or prejudice. pain anymore, for the former things have We can tell a lot about how we ft into our culture when we think about what our passed away.” — Revelation 21:4 cries to the Lord have been over time. It’s a simple diagnostic tool we can utilize to help us understand whether we are a part of the dominant culture or in the minority. Tis is powerful regardless of which culture we fnd ourselves in. We have an opportunity to accurately refect the gospel to those around us, in their context. As followers of Jesus, we have the unique responsibility of bringing the Evangelion (the good news) to every nation, tribe, and tongue.

Te Kingdom of God is now and it is coming. When we believe that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior, confessing it with our mouths and believing in our hearts, we are born again. When we are born again, the Kingdom of God comes into our lives. Te world has yet to see the Kingdom of God come to full fruition as it will when Jesus comes again to establish His Kingdom rule on Earth. In this perfect reign of Jesus, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4). So it is here, but it is also to come.

For the oppressed culture, we have the opportunity to seek justice, bring awareness to their plight, cultivate peace, ease pains and hurts (socially, economically, emotionally, etc), and seek to sew the shalom of God into their lives. In bringing this to bear on the community, it is a testimony and declaration of the Kingdom that is to come to full fruition in Christ’s second return.

For the dominant culture, we have the opportunity to live into the Kingdom of God by “The Spirit of the Lord is upon seeking those things that He will bring about in His rule and reign. We can advocate for me, because he has anointed and bring awareness to the plight of the oppressed, seek for ways to eradicate health crises, take care of those in need (widows, orphans, shut-ins, the elderly, etc.), and pro- me to proclaim good news to vide pathways for fourishing amongst the “least of these” (incarcerated, homeless, the the poor. He has sent me to poor, the trafcked, those with addictions, etc. See Matthew 25:31-46). When we see the restoration of all people to wholeness and healing, we testify and bring witness to the proclaim liberty to the captive power of God as He moves in the lives of those who are submitted and yielded to Him. and recovering of sight to the Te coming Kingdom of God is one that sparks thoughts of overwhelming peace, joy, blind, to set at liberty those and contentment. I know because I experience it in my own heart as I walk through this who are oppressed, to proclaim life. We have the opportunity to give people a taste of the Kingdom no matter what walk of life they are in. We must walk circumspectly and wise as serpents, asking questions to the year of the Lord's favor.” help us understand how the gospel of the Kingdom will be good news and minister to a — Luke 4:18-19 specifc person or people group. Jesus early on in His public ministry, grabbed the scroll of Isaiah while in the synagogue and read these words aloud: “Te Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the cap- tives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke 4:18-19) Jesus has liberated our hearts, has estalished His Kingdom in our hearts, and will bring liberty to those who are oppressed! May this good news overfow from your heart, causing your hands and feet to accomplish Kingdom work and your lips to declare the good news, so that it may fall upon the ears of all who will listen! To God be all the glory, Amen! Pastor Peter Voorhees 2 PASTOR PETE'S 1:1 CCS Prayer Points 1) For the Leadership Team of CCS as they continue to seek God’s will in leading our congregation for the glory of God and the advancement of His Kingdom.

If you would like to add someone to the list of deployed, please email [email protected]. Need Prayer? “True intercession involves bringing the person, or the circumstance that seems to be crashing in on you, before God, until you are changed by His attitude toward that person or circumstance. People describe intercession by saying, “It is putting yourself in someone else’s place.” That is not true! Intercession is putting yourself in God’s place; it is having His mind and His perspective.” — Oswald Chambers

If you have a prayer request, would you let us intercede on your behalf? Our prayer team is dedicated to praying throughout the week for each request we receive, and all are held in strict confdence.

4 GET INVOLVED What is Love The Neighborhood? Love the Neighborhood seeks the personal growth and enrichment of the families currently residing in a low-income housing complex for the betterment and advancement of their future. By doing this, we pursue a more long-term goal of raising up leaders from within the community to develop and continue community transformation. Love the Neighborhood is grounded in the truth that the church is uniquely capable of afrming the dignity of the poor and enabling them to meet their own needs. We simply help in getting the "ball rolling," so to speak. Te primary goal of developing leaders within the community is to address and fll the vacuum of moral, spiritual, and economic leadership that is so prevalent in poor communities.

In the end, Love Te Neighborhood is about loving people. Love the Neighborhood is about relationships and the prayer is that as we love people motivated by the love God has for them, they will come to see Jesus as the way, the truth and the life, and tell others about Him and not us. Love Te Neighborhood is not an opportunity to hold relationships, services, love, and care hostage until people think, act, believe, or look like any particular doctrine, dogma, beliefs, or value system. Love Te Neighborhood exists to be an expression of our faith and conviction, respecting and valuing those to whom we are able to build relationships.

Are You Loving The Neighborhood? As disciples of Jesus loved by Jesus, we must endeavor to reveal Christ’s love to those around us, and thus must combine our words and our deeds. Love the Neighborhood is an opportunity to reveal the love of Christ to those around us, and I invite you to come with us as we pursue loving our neighborhood.

Neighborhood Recap/Needs: Over the past year and a half God has allowed us to serve and love the Nollwood neighborhood in various ways, and the feedback from residents is that our eforts are greatly appreciated and clearly not in vain. God is always taking the small oferings and doing amazing things from them, and Nollwood is a perfect reminder of this Gospel truth.

However, as we move along into the new year, a crucial need is for mentorship with young boys. Tere are very few male role models in the neighborhood, and the boys are in need of male fgures to time with and look up to.

So, if you are a man, and you have some time during the week in the afernoons/evenings, pray about how God might use you in Nollwood to impact these young men: contact Nathan at [email protected]. It could be something as simple as a game of catch, pick up basketball games or board games. God will take your mere presence and work miracles through it.

Tank you for everything you have done, and let's commit to keep loving the neighborhood!

14 CALVARY KIDS FOYOUTH RMINISTRYGE FORGE IS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE IN GRADES 6 – 12 AND MEETS TUESDAY EVENINGS IN THE MODULAR FROM 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM. “Encore! Encore! Encore! Encore!” Te chant of a people who have seen something life-changing, and want more of it. Tis was the theme at Black Diamond Adventure summer camp 2019, and an idea our students got to explore on a deeper level throughout our time there. As believers, we have the most glorious encore to await! God has cast us in His story, He has created us and has a plan written for how He is going to use us, but this life isn’t the end of the script! We serve a Christ who has defeated death and will return one day to bring us into eter- nity with Him, to live in the new earth. But the encore is not just a future reality that we await; it is a Pastor Josh Lott present reality that we are privileged to live into! God desires to bring healing in our lives, continually working in us to make us more like Christ. As the Holy Spirit walks with us through our trials, we grow stronger in our reliance on Him. Te beautiful part of this is that as we come to rely more on Him, the more we are living into the Kingdom of God here on earth, knowing that we are not the center of the story, but supporting cast that He is using to accomplish His plan. I praise God for the opportunities that God gave us during our week at camp, and I continue to pray that our students were impacted by the Gospel that was preached to us.

In addition to a week of amazing teaching and worship, our students were challenged to push themselves through various adventure and group building activities. Te stu- dents hiked, rappelled, zip—lined, climbed, and American Ninja Warrior’d their way through the week, and pushed themselves to be uncomfortable and to do hard things. We are especially thankful to have had Jessica Parson with us throughout the week, to encourage the students in their relationship with Christ and one another, and for the amazing Christ—like example that she set. If you’re an adult and would like to join us at a future camp, we would love to have you! Teaching Series: ACTIVATE September — God’s Compassion Te word compassion literally means “to sufer with”. What does it mean that the almighty, perfect, and unchangeable God shows compassion to a people who don’t deserve it? We will be addressing this idea, as well as what it means for us to show that same Godly compassion to those who don’t deserve it. October — God’s Faithfulness As humans, we’re not very reliable. But God is. Tat is really good news! He remains the same yesterday, today, and forever, which means that we can trust him with everything in our lives! Join us as we dig deeper into what it means to trust God because he is faithful. Forgiveness If God forgives us, how can we not forgive one another? But sometimes this isn’t easy to do. And sometimes we still bear afer we have forgiven others. We will be exploring what true Christ—like forgiveness is, and how we can share that with the world around us. FORGE 15 Tere is much work to be done in Kitsap County. While it is one of the most beautiful places in the world, it is also extremely lost. We all know this; all we have to do is look out our windows, go to the grocery store, or take a walk downtown. Our community needs a lot of things; but most importantly, it needs Jesus. Which means that it needs you. Kitsap County desperately needs fol- lowers of Jesus who are willing to get their hands dirty doing the things that no one else wants to do. We, the citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven, need to be ready and willing to bring the light of Jesus into STUDENT a really dark world. In His letters to diferent churches throughout the Mediterranean, the Apostle Paul uses the word “ambassador” to describe Christians. An ambassador is someone who lives in a foreign land as a representative of the ruler of his or her home country. If we are ambassadors, that means that Pastor Josh Lott his world is not our home, but we are instead citizens of a greater Kingdom. Tat means that God has strategically placed us in our current location in order to be representatives of Him. “For the moment all discipline seems painful We are to bring His Kingdom to this place in everything we rather than pleasant, but later it yields the think, say and do. If we’re honest with ourselves, that peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who can be difcult. Sometimes we don’t know what that looks like. Sometimes we don’t feel have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11 prepared. We feel awkward bringing up spiritual things with other people because we think it is going to alienate them (or us). But we can’t allow our lack of equipping to keep us from jumping in and sharing Jesus with those who need Him. If you feel like you want to share more, serve more or be able to impact your community in new ways, I encourage you to consider enrolling in the Kitsap School of Ministry (KSM). Tis program exists to give people just like you a solid biblical and ministerial foundation as you go out and share Jesus with our community. I encourage you to take a Tursday evening (6:30—8) to come and sit in on one of our classes in order to experience what it’s like to be a student in the KSM.

Planning & Vision INSTRUCTOR: Pastor Peter Voorhees DATES: October 3 — October 10

Tis course focuses on understanding the dynamics of leadership that involve planning and vision. Leaders share a dream and direc- tion that other people want to share and follow. Te leadership vision goes beyond a written organizational mission statement and vision statement to include successful planning and implementation. Te vision of leadership, and subsequent planning to execute the vision, permeates the workplace and is manifested in the actions, beliefs, values and goals of your organization’s leaders.

16 KITSAP SCHOOL OF MINISTRY STUDENT

E PERIENCE Michael Vest with KSM Enrollee Michael Vest

Whenx did you enroll in the Kitsap School of Ministry? I enrolled in March of 2018.

What areas has Christ "I am the vine; you are the called you to serve? branches. Whoever abides in me

I believe God is calling me to serve young and and I in him, he it is that bears less fortunate people in the community. much fruit, for apart from me you What motivated you can do nothing." John 15:5 to enroll in the KSM?

When KSM was first announced over two years I wanted to enroll but didn’t have the time, or so I thought. I wanted to learn how to better serve the Lord and His people. Finally one day God told me to just do it. I applied and was accepted to KSM. I was amazed at how God opened the doors for me to have time for this class just by taking a “leap of faith.”

What has been your favorite class so far?

It’s hard to pick a favorite class because they are all so fantastic and teach such wonderful things about increasing faith! If I had to pick a favorite class it would be the class taught by Mike Best on the importance of worship. Learning that worship is for God and not for us is just one item of importance I have taken away from his class.

What has been the most rewarding part of being a student in the KSM?

KSM has taught me how important it is to put God first and make time for Him daily, which for me works best soon I wake up (with coffee of course). I have also learned to look for God in everything. Putting God first and constantly looking for Him has definitely been extremely rewarding to me and my spiritual growth.

Beginning Sunday, September 29, 5PM — 7PM Location to be announced on our church website.

Beginning in September!! Once a month TALKS we’ll be gathering together to learn about Te- TED ology, Ecclesiology, and Discipleship (TED) and how it informs our service as servants of Jesus. Why do we do what we do? Why do we do it the way we do it? How does the Bible inform our service to one another? Did you know that Jesus becoming a human being actually informs how we serve other people? Our TED Talks will be bridging the gap of biblical theology (what we know about God), our function as the church of Jesus Christ (our ecclesiology), and our development as followers of Jesus (discipleship) including but not limited to the practical service in loving each other and our community. Tis is for everyone! Bring friends, family, and the people that you serve with. Te last Sunday night of every month, we’ll start with a meal together, have a teaching on a topic, a roundtable discussion, panel Q&A, and end with a fun discussion on how the topic plays out in real life. Dinner will be potluck style, so check the church website for location and to sign up. Next TED Talk is scheduled for October 27th. 19 All I have to do is to be good. Tat was my thought as a young man: just go to church, try to obey the THE rules and I’ll make it. Afer all, God loves us. Well, that just isn’t good enough. God does love us but He is not only righteous but just. We only have to look at the condition of the world when Noah lived (Genesis 6:5) or Sodom (Genesis 19); in both cases, EXPLICIT God could only fnd one righteous man. Te God of justice utterly destroyed the world and the city because of their lawlessness. In both of these cases, man did not have the written Law of God. So, what happened afer God gave the written Law? Te rest of the Old Testament reveals man’s inability to live GOSPEL up to God’s standard of righteousness. Where does that leave me? Where does that leave all of us?

Te sacrifcial system that God gave the Israelites through Moses was in- sufcient to do away with sin, we are unable to completely obey the com- "for all have sinned and fall short of mandments of the Law, and I have failed continually in trying to be good enough meet God's standard of holiness and perfection. In Romans 3:23 the glory of God" — Romans 3:23 Paul tells us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” According to God’s justice, we should all die, but we don’t. Why? Te Law was created to be a tutor to lead us to Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:24). Te Law was also created by God to demonstrate our sinfulness (Romans 3:20) and the need for a Savior. So, what can save us? Te answer is simple - faith in Jesus Christ. When God gave the Law, He told the Israelites (and all of us) not only to follow the Law, but to believe in Him with all their hearts, all of their soul and all of their might (Deuteronomy 6:4). When we consider someone in the Bible like King David, "For by works of the law he was called a "man afer God's own heart" even though he continually sinned in many ways. His repentance and faith in God was just as real and evident following each of his no human being will failures. Te writer of Hebrews makes it clear in Chapter 11 that it is by faith in God and His perfect work that we are saved, not our works, as he describes individuals who found be justified in his sight, rigteousness through faith. When Jesus Christ died on the cross, He became the eternal sacrifce for sin. He took our place on the cross and by faith in Him, we stand righteous since through the law before God; not of our own doing but because the faith we have in Jesus covers us with His righteousness. In Ephesians 2:8-9, Paul says “For by grace you have been saved through comes knowledge of faith; and that not of ourselves but a gif from God; not as a result of works, that no one sin." — Romans 3:20 should boast.” Jesus tells us in John 3:15 “that whoever believes in Him will have eternal life.” I am no longer concerned about my future because I have faith in Jesus Christ and am assured that my name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. I now know that I am a child of God and assured a place in heaven. I also know that I am here on earth to do good works because Paul tells us in Ephesians 2:10 that “we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Tere is great peace and contentment when we walk in this kind of assurance, when we wake in the morning and know that no matter what happens during the day that if God is for us, who can stand against us. What sweet fellowship we can now have with others who share the same contentment, this same assurance and this same Savior, Jesus Christ.

If you don’t have that assurance but want "For we are his workmanship, created in it, the solution is simple. Believe that Jesus Christ, the son of God, died in your place, Christ Jesus for good works, which God was raised from the dead by God and confess that with your mouth! You will prepared beforehand, that we should fnd great peace in that choice. walk in them." — Ephesians 2:10 Rev. Walter Le Couteur Pastor at Lincoln Ave. Bible Church Rev.
