Q: Why did you become a scientist? A: I was always interested in science fiction movies and in each of the movies growing up in the 60s, the scientist was the hero—they saved . Q: What’s one interesting aspect of your job? A: I have the great privilege of working with one of the largest telescopes in the world, right here in New Mexico. We’re working with the 2.4 meter telescope at Magdalena Ridge Observatory to survey the night sky and detect and track objects that could hit the Earth. Q: What advice would you give to young people considering a career such as yours? A: To be an astronomer, you have to like math and science—but remember that it’s a complex study. When I was in school I remember feeling almost every time I took a test that I wouldn’t make it. But if you’re persistent, you can achieve your goals in the end.

INTERVIEWS I ASKED A COUPLE TECH STUDENTS ABOUT THE DATING SCENE HERE (BECAUSE OF COVID DIFFICULTIES AND THE SHEER RATIO OF GUYS TO GIRLS AT THIS SCHOOL). THESE ARE SOME OF THEIR RESPONSES. “THERE’S NOTHING, GIVE UP. HONESTLY, YOUR CHANCES ARE BETTER IF YOU’RE GAY… EITHER GENDER. OH ALSO BE READY TO OUTSOURCE.” -SINGLE ANNON STUDENT “GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. BE WILLING TO DRIVE TO ABQ. TECH IS LIKE THAT MAGIC EIGHT BALL. ‘PROSPECTS LOW’.” -ANNON STUDENT “IT’S POSSIBLE, NOT PROBABLE. YOUR GAME JUST NEEDS TO BE ON POINT. I DO AGREE THOUGH, THE PARTY AND DATING SCENE IS THIN.” -ANNON STUDENT IN RELATIONSHIP “PERSONALLY, I NEVER FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO DATE HERE AT TECH. THERE IS A LARGE QUANTITY OF GUYS HERE AT TECH AND ALL THE GIRLS ARE OF GOOD QUALITY. TECH USED TO HOST A LOT OF IN PERSON EVENTS AND GENERALLY HAS A LOT OF CLUBS TO JOIN AND BE A PART OF, SO IT IS EASY TO MEET PEOPLE. SO, I WOULD SAY THAT MEETING PEOPLE HERE AT TECH IS POSSIBLE, BUT A LOT OF STUDENTS HERE AREN’T INTERESTED IN DATING. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN A NERDIER CROWD YOU WON’T HAVE TROUBLE HERE AT TECH.” -KRISS
