9 x11 10 x23 Historical Background The Battle of the Bulge is commonly regarded the last German offensive in the West. This is not the case. Not only did Operation Nordwind match the much better known Battle of the Bulge in its ferocity, it even came much closer to driving a wedge between the Western Allies than the former ever did! Had it not been for the intervention of Churchill, the initial American plan of not defending against the impending attack, and instead ordering a withdrawal into the Vosges mountains, would have caused a major public rift between the French and American Allies exceeding Hitler's wildest dreams! 11 x10 January 1, 1945. The German Offensive in The Ardennes has come to a standstill. General Patton's third army has been sent North to relieve the besieged 101st Airborne division in Bastogne. This, however, has left the US 7th and French American equipped 1st armies spread dangerously thin further South in the French region of Alsace. Not only does this present Hitler with an opportunity to relieve the pressure on the German forces in the Ardennes, it also opens up the possibility of trapping and destroying a large number of enemy forces and of recapturing Alsace and its capital Strasbourg, which the Germans consider German territory. If The Nazi forces succeed in sending armored forces through the gap, and link up with the forces attacking across the Rhine and a simultaneous break-out from the Colmar Pocket further South, there's a real chance of dealing a severe blow to the Western Allies, pulling off a great propaganda coup and prolonging the war in the West. In the end, despite an initial German advance in some sectors of the front, stubborn Allied defense and poor coordination on the part of the Germans denied the Germans victory. As the German commander, can you do better and capture 12 x20 Saverne and/or Strasbourg before the Russians launch their winter offensive in the East which will force German High Command to halt the offensive? As the Allied commander, can you avert disaster and prevent history from taking a different course? The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn and you are in command. The rest is history!

choosing this option, the Allied player may NOT draw a new COMBAT card. They still do roll two extra dice when 13 x5 Briefing rolling for reinforcements. Both sides take 5 command and 2 combat cards (for each map). The Germans play first. [Winter] Combat card rules are in effect (Actions 25). This map is to be placed side by side with the Blood-Stained Snow RIGHT map. Each map has its own breakthrough Winter weather rules (Actions 26) are in effect. and combat cards deck. Ground reinforcement rules (Actions 28) are in effect for both players. Allied reinforcements enter on hexes 14 x2 Add the following terrain [and units] on the hexes where the two maps join: Second row from the top: curved road marked with an entry (i.e. battle star) marker; German units enter on an eligible Axis baseline hex. On the hex with one German specialized troops unit (Mountain troops); 4th row from the top: Woods hex with one Blood-Stained Snow RIGHT map, the Germans have an additional entry marker (battle star) near the Rhine river American mortar unit; 6th hex from the top: Town hex (Reipertswiller) with a German medal on top worth one as well where they may place reinforcements. Reinforcements must enter on eligible places on their respective temporary medal objective for the Axis forces. 8th hex from the top: straight road hex; 10th hex from the top: maps. town hex (Bouxwiller); 12th hex from the top: Straight road hex; 16th hex from the top: curved road hex. Break-out from the Colmar pocket (Off-map): When the German player is entitled to receiving reinforcements, rather than placing them on the map, he may place a battle star on his medal stand. For every three battle stars thus collected, he may exchange them for one victory medal. 15 x2 Conditions of Victory Road network: Units may only use the road bonus if the roads themselves (i.e. not just the hexes) are physically connected! The side that holds 24 medals at the end of the American turn wins the game. However, the Germans win a sudden-death victory if they either control the town of Saverne OR ALL other towns worth one or more temporary Special weapon assets Late War rules are in effect (SWAs 4) for units thus marked: Anti-tank gun Late War (ASW victory medals at the start of their turn. 5); Mortar Late War (SWA 6); Machine gun Late War (SWA 7). The town of Singling is worth one temporary medal objective to the Axis forces, The town of Wingen two and 16 x4 holding the town of Saverne at the start of an Axis turn results in sudden death and an automatic win for the Axis forces (indicated by a single German medal; you may e.g. use a Russian one instead to distinguish it from the Special Rules other medals). As mentioned above, the town of Reipertswiller, which is situated on one of the hexes where the Flamethrower tank unit rules are in effect (Troops 13). two maps join, is also worth one temporary medal objective to the German forces. German specialized infantry units (Troops 2) are SS mountain troops. In addition to the regular rules, their dice Entry markers (Actions 33) are in effect for the Allied forces and are indicated by battle stars. Allied units can are reduced by 1 only-rather than the standard 2-when battling a unit on a mountain hex. They may also enter a enter on those hexes only. mountain hex from a non-hill hex or retreat onto such hexes from a mountain hex. If the German reinforcement 17 x5 roll should yield specialized infantry reinforcements, however, they CANNOT obtain more SS Mountain Troops, they will have to choose "regular" specialized infantry instead. Make sure to distinguish them in an appropriate way! A Hill is a Hill: [Any] Infantry unit can move onto a mountain hex via a Hills with Woods hex or retreat onto them from a mountain hex. Otherwise, Hills with woods play like regular woods, as per standard rules. 18 x3 Units marked with a battle star are supported infantry (Troops 27(2) and supported armor (Troops 28) respectively. The Blies (3 hexes) and Moder rivers are treated as a frozen river (terrain 47). The Rhein and Saar rivers are impassable! Steep hills ((terrain 13) rules are in effect. 19 x4 Snow-covered mountains: Entering mountain terrain from a lower elevation is a two-hex move. Re-supply rules are in effect (Actions 24) Russian Vistula Offensive: The German units are racing against time. After playing a recon 1 card, rather than drawing two cards and picking the best one, the Allied player may take a victory medal instead.
