In Flanders Fields November 2019

Lieutenant‐Colonel John McCrae of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps wrote the following poem in May 1915, aer watching the death of a close friend in Belgium.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, sll bravely singing fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago, We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields! Table of Contents

Teaching Digital Cizenship: Seng up parental controls and privacy sengs

Thank you to all of parents who parcipated in the technology survey and aended the Screenagers parent evening. The response to this event was overwhelmingly posive. Over the course of this year, I will connue to provide resources around this topic. This month, I want to focus on how to set parental controls and create privacy seng on devices. If you have any quesons about this informaon please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

Computer Privacy Take a look at the privacy sengs offered in your browser (usually found in the Tools menu) to see whether you can fine‐tune them to keep the good and block the bad.

Smartphone Privacy Sengs on smartphones vary, but you can ghten up privacy with these precauons: Turn off locaon services. That prevents apps from tracking your locaon. Don’t let apps share data. Some apps want to use informaon stored on your phone (your contact list, for example). Say no. Enable privacy sengs on apps you download. Make sure your teens are using strict privacy sengs on services such as In‐ stagram and Facebook.

Block Websites If you just want to limit what your kids can search for, your best opon is to enable Google SafeSearch in whichever browser or browsers you use. First, you need to make sure your browsers use Google as their default search engine, and then you need to turn on SafeSearch. This is a good precauon to take as soon as your kids start going online and you want to make sure they don't accidentally stumble across something yucky.

Allow me to see what my kid is doing: A full‐featured, third‐party parental control service such as Qustodio or NetNanny will give you a lot of control over all of your kid's devices (the ones they use at home as well as their phones). These can be pricey (especially if you have several kids to monitor), but the cost includes constant device monitoring, offering you visibility into how kids are using their devices. These parental con‐ trols can only keep track of accounts that they know your kid is using.

Monitor my kid's phone. To keep tabs on your tween or teen's phone, your best bet is to download an app such as Bark, KidBridge (formerly TeenSafe), or WebWatcher, which monitor text messages, social networks, emails, and other mobile funcons. To monitor social media, you'll need your kid's account informaon, including passwords.

Turn off Wi‐Fi. There are both hardware and soware soluons to control your home network and your home Wi‐Fi. To name a few popular ones: OpenDNS is a download that works with your exisng router (the device that brings the internet into your home) to filter internet content. Circle Home Plus is a device and subscripon service that pairs with your exisng router and lets you pause access to the internet, create me limits, and add content filters to all devices on your home network (including Wi‐Fi devices), plus manage phones and tablets outside the home.

Can I set parental controls in specific apps, such as Snapchat? To find out if your kids' favorite apps offer any types of restricons, go to the app's sengs secon (usually represented by the gear icon). Some apps go a step further by leng users control their own use of the app. TikTok's Digital Wellbeing features help curb me spent on the app and limit inappropriate videos. YouTube lets you set a reminder to take a break.
