  • Canadian Airmen Lost in Wwii by Date 1942
CANADA'S AIR WAR 1942 updated 21/03/07 During the year the chief RCAF Medical Officer in England, W/C A.R. Tilley, moved from London to East Grinstead where his training in reconstructive surgery could be put to effective use (R. Donovan). See July 1944. January 1942 419 Sqn. begins to equip with Wellington Ic aircraft (RCAF Sqns.). Air Marshal H. Edwards was posted from Ottawa, where as Air Member for Personnel he had overseen recruitment of instructors and other skilled people during the expansion of the BCATP, to London, England, to supervise the expansion of the RCAF overseas. There he finds that RCAF airmen sent overseas are not being tracked or properly supported by the RAF. At this time the location of some 6,000 RCAF airmen seconded to RAF units are unknown to the RCAF. He immediately takes steps to change this, and eventually had RCAF offices set up in Egypt and India to provide administrative support to RCAF airmen posted to these areas. He also begins pressing for the establishment of truly RCAF squadrons under Article 15 (a program sometimes referred to as "Canadianization"), despite great opposition from the RAF (E. Cable). He succeeded, but at the cost of his health, leading to his early retirement in 1944. Early in the year the Fa 223 helicopter was approved for production. In a program designed by E.A. Bott the results of psychological testing on 5,000 personnel selected for aircrew during 1942 were compared with the results of the actual training to determine which tests were the most useful.

  • South Asians As Medical Scapegoats in British Columbia and the Pacific Coast States, 1900-1924
South Asians as Medical Scapegoats in British Columbia and the Pacific Coast States, 1900-1924 by Isabel Wallace A thesis submitted to the Department of History In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy in History Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (September, 2013) Copyright © Isabel Wallace, 2013 Abstract This transnational study of the first-wave South Asian immigrant experience in British Columbia and the Pacific coast states shows how elected officials at all levels of government, bureaucrats, union leaders, physicians, members of the press, and the general public utilized purported public health concerns to justify South Asian exclusion and disenfranchisement. While all Asian groups living along the Pacific coast faced opposition to their immigration and settlement, India’s subordinate status within the British Empire, and a sustained western association of South Asians with disease, uniquely positioned North American discourse on South Asians at the intersection of colonial theory, Orientalism, and medicalized nativism in the first two decades of the twentieth century. ii Acknowledgements First of all, I would like to thank God for watching over me during this entire process. I would also like to thank my supervisors, Dr. Jeffrey Brison and Dr. Barrington Walker, for their valuable assistance during the thesis writing process, and Committee members Dr. Ishita Pande, Dr. Blaine Allan, Dr. Jane Errington, Dr. Margaret Little, and Dr. Patricia Roy. I would also like to thank Dr. Galen Roger Perras for kindly agreeing to read early drafts of the thesis, and for providing me with guidance with my archival research at Library and Archives Canada.

  • Guide to the Manuscripts in the University of Cape Town Libraries
GUIDE TO THE MANUSCRIPTS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN LIBRARIES CONSOLIDATED VERSION JUNE 2013 ii LIST OF CONTENTS PREFACE . v LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS . vii MANUSCRIPTS . 1 INDEX . 452 iii iv PREFACE GENERAL This guide was compiled from the printed guide and first supplement entitled Handlist of Manuscripts in the University of Cape Town Libraries, which was published during 1968, and three typewritten accession lists. This NAREM edition was assembled and updated in accordance with guidelines laid down by the National Archivist of the Republic of South Africa. The term manuscript is used to cover all handwritten documents whether originals or transcripts, or photographic or microfilm reproductions of such documents. The term is also used to include documents of which the original was typescript. Initially the University of Cape Town Libraries possessed only a very small number of manuscripts. During the 1940s, however, a few large collections of papers and manuscripts were received, such as the Dr. CL Leipoldt Papers and the Sir Walter Stanford Papers. From about 1947, serious attention began to be given to the problem of preserving manuscripts and also of assembling the University archives. From the early 1950s onwards purposeful efforts were made to organize and record these collections. The Archives of the University of Cape Town have of recent years been organized as a separate unit. The bulk of the manuscripts in the University of Cape Town Libraries consists of collections of family papers and other private papers, but miscellaneous documents (i.e. literary and music manuscripts), and even single items, are also included. The manuscripts are mainly of South African interest, but there are a small number of non- South African manuscripts.

To celebrate the re-opening, the National Museum has put together a fun-filled Opening Weekend Carnival that will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 19 and 20 September. Everyone is invited to celebrate the museum’s re-opening at the carnival and to take a refreshed look at Singapore’s history in the new galleries.
