Richard has very kindly updated this valuable record to include developments which have taken place over the last twenty-five years.     TRANSACTIONS OF THE Monumental Brass Society VOLUME XVII, PART 6 2008 The West family of Hinton Martell, Dorset, and their monuments at Christchurch Priory by SALLY BADHAM MONGST the noble and gentry families who chose burial in the Augustinian Christchurch Priory, Hampshire, in the Middle Ages were those of AFitzherbert and West. Two generations of the West family made testamentary dispositions for their burial there around the turn of the fifteenth century, one with provision for a monument. The aim of this paper is to examine whether any of the surviving monuments, in particular the broken remains of an indent in the Loft Museum at the Priory, can be linked with any members of the West family. The West family Sir Thomas West, 2nd Lord West, was born c. 1321, the eldest son of Sir Thomas, 1st Lord West, and was granted his father’s lands in 1344.1 He was an active knight. In 1344, he accompanied Ralph Gifford, the Justiciar of Ireland, on an expedition to Ireland to impose order on the country, while two years later he fought at Crécy and in the subsequent siege of Calais. He had further experience of service in Scotland in 1355 and 1358; in Gascony in 1359, 1368 and 1370; and in Brittany in 1380. At home, Thomas acted as a commissioner of array for Hampshire and Wiltshire on several occasions from 1346 onwards and was Member of Parliament for Wiltshire in 1364/5. During and after the Peasants’ Revolt, he received several commissions to suppress and punish rebels in Hampshire and Wiltshire.

    Outside West Keeper’s Gallery, introduction on diagonal wall St Albans & Hertfordshire Architectural & Archaeological Society Welcome to this exhibition celebrating our first 175 years We were founded in 1845 and are one of the oldest historical societies in the UK. In 1845 Victoria had been Queen for eight years, the rubber band was patented, and Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s SS Great Britain became the first screw propelled vessel to cross the Atlantic. People were also becoming more aware that their historical heritage was at risk. Our aims were to: • raise public awareness of our heritage and • to actively preserve the crumbling St Albans Abbey church and other Hertfordshire churches. Later we increased our range of interests, and influence, to include archaeology and all 1 aspects of our history - modern as well as ancient, general as well as local. But our original aims are unchanged. They are to Discover, Protect, Innovate and Inform. These are this exhibition’s key themes. Do explore what our Society has achieved on a local and national level. Portrait of James Grimston 2nd Earl of Verulam President and benefactor of the Society 1846-1895. James Grimston was President of the Society for 49 out of its first 55 years. Besides giving the Society its strategic direction, he also preserved the site of Verulamium. In 1854 he purchased the part which lay outside his estate; thereby saving the area from harmful development until it could be properly excavated. He also allowed only those he trusted to excavate. The Grimston family have always been closely connected with the Society: • They donated finds on their land to the city of St Albans.

    Lasting Impressions: Monumental Brass Rubbings Haverford College Libraries http://library.haverford.edu/ , , Lasting Impressions: Monumental Brass Rubbings Haverford College October 26, 2013 to January 10, 2014 his student-curated exhibit, developed in collaboration between the John P. Chesick Scholars Program and the Libraries, Tcelebrates the inauguration of Dan Weiss as Haverford College’s 14th President. The exhibit features a series of monumental brass rubbings made by Maxine and David Cook ’64 in Germany in 1971 and the United Kingdom in 1973. The exhibit also highlights art, artifacts and books from our collections which date from the medieval period. The recent gift made by the Cooks proved to be an excellent frame- work for celebrating this “monumental” moment in Haverford’s history, and we thank them for their donation of the brass rubbings for contin- ued use in teaching and research. We have no doubt that the title phrase: Lasting Impressions will mark far more than the messages found in the rubbings themselves. We congratulate President Weiss on his inauguration; we celebrate the past, present, and future of Haverford College; and we look forward to the lasting impressions yet to come. Introduction onumental brasses were produced in large numbers from the 13th through the 17th centuries and serve as a fascinat- Ming window into the social, political, and religious worlds of those eras. Inscriptions accompanying the engraved figures document the development of language and spelling as well as the religious beliefs of the deceased and their families. The figures themselves illuminate the history of heraldry, the development of genealogy, and the ever-changing patterns of costume.
