Innovative restaurants beat Covid lockdown blues

While the adjusted level 4 Covid-19 lockdown has hit many Pretoria restaurants, some outlets are adjusting their business models to ease the impact on their businesses. Whether that means putting extra care into their takeaways or outperforming the local supermarket, local eateries are doing what they can to stay afl oat. The owner of three local popular restaurants, Forti Mazzone, was one example of this. Mazzone, who owns Forti Too restaurant in Lynnwood Bridge Centre, Forti Grill and Bar restaurant and Biccs restaurant, said his secret for success was to come up with innovative techniques to meet the changing needs of his customers as a result of Covid-19 restrictions. Downgrades are ‘bad news for residents’ Sinesipho Schrieber Moody’s consistent downgrading of the Tshwane metro’s credit rating due to its weak fi nancial state is bad news for residents, an economic analyst says. “This frequent downgrading might pressure the municipality into raising loan interest rates to attract investors,” said economist Dr Azar Jammine. “This in a worst case scenario could lead to spiralling debt, collapsing service delivery.” The situation has also been made worse by the coronavirus outbreak, further aff ecting service delivery. Jammine is an expert analyst on both South African and international economic aff airs. This warning comes after three medium voltage motors used to run pumps exploded on Sunday, at Rand Water’s Palmiet booster 35 pumping station. Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said Rand Water notifi ed the metro on Monday that the station’s “infrastructure failure” has aff ected its water pumping capacity. “Due to this failure, only 55% of its normal daily water supply volume can be supplied,” said Mashigo. “Rand Water said that if the call to reduce water consumption is not heeded, there will not be suffi cient water to supply municipalities and its reservoirs will run dry,” he said. “Residents within Tshwane’s jurisdiction are urged to reduce their water consumption to avoid possible water shortages. “The metro’s water reservoir levels would also drop and ultimately run dry, a situation that will lead to inevitable water supply interruptions.” To save water, residents must: - Not water or irrigate gardens with a For Illustration. Bulls’ goodbye to well-loved ‘rugby servant’ Koos Venter The Rugby-union (BBRU), as well as various individuals and organisations in the South African rugby community, have been paying tribute to the former president of the Blue Bulls, Boet Fick, who passed away over the weekend. The popular and beloved rugby man, who until fairly recently was still actively involved as a rugby administrator in the game, was 86 years old. Fick led the union in a time of great success on the fi eld and during his era as president, the Bulls dominated SuperRugby with three titles in four seasons. The charismatic, humble, and soft-spoken Nicolaas Hendrik Fick, in rugby circles aff ectionately known as “Oom Boet”, served as president of the BBRU from 2005 to 2010, having deputised before that from 2002. He fi rst became involved in rugby administration through the club ranks in the Far North province (Limpopo Blue Bulls) from the early 1970s, before advancing to the position of Vice President of the Blue Bulls General Council. He then advanced to the top post at the Bulls. After he stepped down as president of the Blue Bulls, he was elected to the SA Rugby Executive, serving for a period of eight years before fi nally stepping down from rugby administration in 2018. After his tenure with the Blue Bulls, he was also appointed Nicole Erasmus (left) in action for the South African women’s hockey team, which she has represented in 48 matches already. lifelong honorary vice president at the union.
