The Community Foundation of Gaston County, Inc. is confirmed in compliance with the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations. We are proud to show this official National Standard Seal, which denotes our achievement in establishing legal, ethical, and effective operating practices that show our transparency and financial responsibility. FROM THE PRESIDENT & CHAIRMAN A Message to our Community Your Community Foundation experienced an exceptional year during 2017 by growing its asset base to over $90 million dollars while fulfilling its mission of “… connecting donors with community needs to enhance the lives of present and future generations.”

The growth of the Foundation over the past 39 years has enabled grants from the Foundation to exceed $96 million to assist many important charitable organizations to achieve their missions and serve our community. Thank you for your continued support and commitment of these many important organizations.

As you begin your review of this report, we’d like to point out a few highlights: • Your gifts (including agency funds) to the Foundation exceeded $9.8 million. • Grants from the Foundation exceeded $8.3 million, a record year for grants! • Investment gains for 2017 were $9.9 million (+13.3%). • We established 18 new funds in 2017, and another record year of new members (54) joined our Next Generation Giving Circle. • During our annual Community Grant cycle, recommendations were approved from the Grants Committee (totaling $682,572) to 31 nonprofit agencies and Foundation initiatives. • Scholarships at the Foundation provided college funds for 118 students. • The Community Foundation RUN event continued its success exceeding $1.3 million, bringing 15-year total to over $18 million for local nonprofits.

The Foundation could not do what it does without the support of our donors, partners, and friends. Through your generosity, we have been able to grant more money in the community than any other time in our history, further enhancing the lives of generations to come. This is a testament to your Ernest W. Sumner Richard K. Craig commitment to our community and we are privileged to act as stewards of the President Chairman of the Board charitable funds entrusted to us. Thank you.

GENERATIONS OF GENEROSITY l 3 l 2017 Allen H. Sims Award

l 4 l COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF GASTON COUNTY 2017 ALLEN H. SIMS AWARD Care. Connect. Contribute. Care, Connect, Contribute was the theme of the night on Thursday, September 21, 2017 for the 28th Annual Allen H. Sims Dinner hosted by the Board of Directors of the Community Foundation of Gaston County. The dinner was held at Gaston Country Club where over 200 donors gathered to hear a report on the Foundation and to honor the recipient of this year’s Allen H. Sims Award. Rick Craig, Board Chair, reported to those gathered that the Foundation collectively granted out $5.5 million in 2016 and awarded the largest grant in the history of the Foundation as a multiyear grant of $1 million to the new Warlick Family YMCA as a major gift to the community. A video showing highlights of the year with the resounding theme of Care-Connect-Contribute served as the program for the evening. Mr. Gene Matthews, Director and Investment Committee Chair, presented the Allen H. Sims Award to Charlton Torrence, Jr. as the 2017 recipient. Mr. Matthews has been associated with Mr. Torrence for many years and was able to give a firsthand account of the many contributions in time, talent and resources given to our community by Mr. Torrence. The Community Foundation of Gaston County is proud to have Charlton Torrence on our team and congratulate him as the 2017 Allen H. Sims Award recipient. Mr. Torrence exemplifies the Sims Award attitude: the selfless act of seeing a need and finding a solution, of caring for a community and making a difference. Born in 1928 at Highland Hospital in Gastonia, NC; Mr. Torrence was educated locally from Victory School to Gastonia High School before attending Darlington Prep School followed by Davidson College where he double majored in economics and business. In 1955 he married the late Mary Elizabeth Mason and together they raised three children: (pictured left R-L) Elizabeth Ring, Catherine, and Charlton K. Torrence III. Today he is also proud of two granddaughters: Sarah and Meredith Giles. If you want to see him smile, ask Charlton Torrence about baseball, specifically a game played in 1945. Young Charlton was an athlete in high school playing football, basketball and baseball. That particular year Shelby had the team to beat, winning the Little World Series. However, there was one team, and only one, with the ability to shut out Shelby that year. The team to do that was Charlton Torrence’s American Legion team and he was the pitcher. He smiles telling of the win and is quick to name his teammates that shut out Shelby, winning 5 to 0. He went on to play football and win the Mid-South championship while at Darlington Prep School and was named Honorable mention All Mid-South. During the summers he played semi-pro baseball. The skills Mr. Torrence learned playing the team sport of baseball transferred to a career in textiles. Starting out during summers with Superior Yarn Mills in Mt. Holly, a variety of jobs taught the young man textiles from the bottom up. Every job was learned from the opening and picker room, card room, spinning and twister room, ball warps and section beams to the yarn testing lab. All these jobs prepared Mr. Torrence for yarn and fabric sales in many capacities and serving as Vice President for Superior Yarn Mills, Clyde Fabrics, Textiles Inc., which went private to become Ti Caro and later sold to Dixie Yarns. His sales territory covered the USA, Canada, Puerto Rico, , France and Israel. In 1989, Charlton Torrence retired from a successful career in textiles. Before launching his career, Mr. Torrence joined the US Naval Reserve. He served our country from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1955 as a lieutenant. With a passion for service to others, a lifetime of civic duty began.

GENERATIONS OF GENEROSITY l 5 l In the late 1950’s Charlton Torrence was a member of the Civitan Club for a number of years. He is currently a member of the Gastonia Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He served seven years as treasurer of Crisis Assistance Ministries and was instrumental in starting an endowment there. For several years he served on the Board of Advisors for Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden along with membership and financial support. The Schiele Museum awarded Charlton Torrence the Bud Schiele Lifetime Achievement plate in 2009. He has served on the Schiele’s Board of Directors and is currently on the Board of Advisors. As a major contributor himself, Mr. Torrence helped to raise 3.2 million dollars to build the new Environmental Studies Center. Currently the Schiele maintains an endowment at the Community Foundation for which Mr. Torrence was happy to be a part. Ann Tippitt, Executive Director of the Schiele, recalls the many times she and Mr. Torrence would meet with a prospective donor and how his gentle manner and approach would yield excellent results due to his sincerity. Each one of us deals with loss in a unique and personal way. As a tribute to his wife and to honor her memory in a way that would give back to others and our community, Charlton Torrence chose to contribute to Gastonia’s Potters House in 1997. Since that time he has supported Potter’s House and continues to work on their behalf. As a Gaston County citizen, Mr. Torrence has been active locally and beyond. He served three years on the CaroMont Health Foundation grants committee, is a lifetime member of the NC Zoo Society, was President of the Combed Yarn Spinners Association, a former director of the Avon and Peoples bonded warehouses and a member of Gaston Country Club. In 2016, Mayor John Bridgman and the Gastonia City Council presented Mr. Torrence with a letter of proclamation for his accomplishments and dedication to our country and citizens of Gastonia and Gaston County. Reverend J. J. Kennedy was one of the first pastors for the First Presbyterian Church in Gastonia and was Charlton Torrence’s great grandfather. With that family connection it is easy to understand why Charlton has been so active at the church over the years. Many remember or at least have heard of Dr. James H. Henderlite who was pastor from 1912-1940. Dr. Henderlite baptized Chartlon with water from the Jordan River. Teaching Sunday school, serving as a and an elder, and serving on a nine person committee to update and rewrite the church history are among the many ways Mr. Torrence has participated at the church throughout his life. Beginning in 1998, Charlton Torrence joined the Board of the First Gaston Foundation and served as treasurer. The work of the First Gaston Foundation is recognized as a game changer for Gaston County and those living here. In 2015, the Board decided to move the First Gaston Foundation to the Community Foundation and create the First Gaston Foundation Fund and Albert Myers Scholarship Fund to effectively preserve the assets and continue to make grants back to the community with considerably less overhead cost. Over the years, Mr. Torrence has seen the advantages of the decision made along with all First Gaston Board members, to protect and sustain the mission of the fund. Currently, Mr. Torrence serves as a Director on the Board to the Community Foundation and has been a fund holder since 1993. When asked, he can be counted on to arrive on time to present grant checks to nonprofits with a cheerful attitude. As you can see, Charlton Torrence has been around the bases a few times and our community is all the better for it. From the baseball field to the world of textiles, community and church service, this is a man you want on your team. l 6 l COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF GASTON COUNTY Allen Harold Sims 1899-1987

After spending his childhood and youth in Gaston and Cleveland Counties, Mr. Sims graduated from college and took an accounting job in a Cramerton mill. He then came to Gastonia as a bank accounting clerk in 1920 and became President of that bank, Citizens National in 1953. Mr. Sims headed a long list of business- related and local community organizations, but was best known for his personal generosity – much of which was anonymously given as college financial aid for many deserving young people. Bequests from his estate and that of his wife, Mrs. Anne Rankin Sims, created the largest unrestricted endowment fund at the Community Foundation. It was that lengthy record of sharing with the community his financial resources and influence that led the Foundation to initiate the Allen H. Sims Award in 1990 to honor other special leaders who have followed a path of generosity with time, influence, and finances to make Gaston County a better place.

GENERATIONS OF GENEROSITY l 7 l NEXT GENERATION FUND The Next Generation of Generosity The Next Gen had a milestone year in 2017. The giving circle had an addition of 54 new members, enjoyed two socials, participated in the Education Foundation’s “Are You Smarter than a Gaston County 5th Grader,” awarded 5 grants, and volunteered at the Community Foundation Run! The Next Gen Fund is a giving circle that allows donors to pool resources and make collective grants to add greater impact to their gift. Because of our members, the Next Gen is continuing to make a difference in Gaston County. The Next Generation fund has granted over $165,000 back into Gaston County over the last 17 years, all while growing the fund to over $264,000. 2017 was particularly special as we had our first transition of a Teens Changing Gaston County member to a Next Generation member. A partnership between the Community Foundation of Gaston County and Gaston County Family YMCA established the program twelve years ago. The TCGC Board meets once a month during the school year to learn about the grant making process, network with nonprofit professionals, and socialize with other teens from around the County. After learning the process of grants and their impact, the Teen Board is able to judge applications from fellow peers regarding service projects. As a follow up to awarding the grants, teens will volunteer with the projects awarded to experience their philanthropy on a personal level. The 2017-2018 Teens Changing Gaston County Board awarded grants to the following youth-led service projects in Gaston County:

GENERATIONS OF GENEROSITY l 13 l FEATURED GRANT Generations of Building Habitat for Humanity began in Gaston County in 1989. The Community Foundation has walked hand in hand with Habitat Gaston since the organization’s inception. Initially it was community leaders at the Foundation that urged the formation of a Habitat affiliate in Gaston County. In the early years, the Foundation sponsored the building of 2 homes on Pryor Street in Gastonia, and provided seed funding for houses in Belmont, Cherryville and Bessemer City. The Community Foundation has provided steady and significant grant funding to Habitat for numerous projects including renovations to the Habitat Restore, the construction of the first house in Dallas, NC and the first house in Ranlo, NC. In 2009, the Foundation joined Habitat in celebrating their 20th anniversary with a $30,000 grant. In 2013, the Foundation partnered with Habitat and awarded $66,000 for the building of the 100th Habitat house in Gaston County. This year, in honor of Habitat’s 30th anniversary, the Community Foundation of Gaston County presented the nonprofit with a check for $37,500 to assist in building its 115th home in Gaston County. “For 30 years, the Community Foundation and Habitat for Humanity have served as longtime partners in the development of Gaston County,” said Ernest Sumner, the Foundation’s President. “The Board of the Foundation is honored to be a participant in the funding for Habitat’s 115th house in Gaston.” The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope. The nonprofit is devoted to building “simple, decent, and affordable” homes. A Christian-based housing ministry that addresses the issues of poverty housing in Gaston County, Habitat Gaston works towards coordinating all aspects of home building: from fundraising; building site selection; partnering family selection and support; to house construction and mortgage servicing. Habitat believes that everyone regardless of race, religion or background should be able to live in affordable housing in which they can be proud. The important work of Habitat in Gaston County is and has been recognized and supported by the Community Foundation. The overlap in history, mission, and the generosity of those involved has created a close connection between these two organizations. The Community Foundation is proud to celebrate alongside Habitat during this milestone anniversary and continue to make our community a better place to live for present and future generations. l 14 l COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF GASTON COUNTY History of Habitat

Hearing about the incredible work of Habitat in surrounding areas, Becky Carter, then Executive Director of the Foundation, began her research and recruited the ideal candidate to act as the first volunteer president and Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity of Gaston County. Johan Newcombe, a well respected community volunteer, was selected to lead the organization. Johan served in this dynamic role from 1989 until 1995. Johan was the major architect of the program in Gastonia and worked closely with Becky Carter and the Foundation to secure the initial funding needed. Johan would later join the Board of the Community Foundation and become President in 1998. To celebrate Habitat’s 20th anniversary in 2009, Habitat built a house in honor of Johan Newcombe (pictured above).

GENERATIONS OF GENEROSITY l 15 l Running for Future Generations Since inception, the Community Foundation Run has brought an astounding $18 million philanthropic dollars to our community. These funds are busy feeding the hungry, supporting the sick and elderly, teaching kids to read, building affordable housing, enriching our lives through the arts and touching the lives of everyone in Gaston County. The magic of a community celebration, combined with ease of giving has made the Community Foundation Run the most visible way for the community to learn about Gaston County nonprofits and their important work.

GENERATIONS OF GENEROSITY l 17 l FEATURED DONOR STORIES Generations of Philanthropy Philanthropy is a verb - a story people tell through their actions, contributions, and the impact they create now and for the future. The Community Foundation has been honored to work with many families throughout the decades who have passed their giving spirit down from generation to generation. The philanthro- pists featured below have followed in their family’s footsteps. These legacies are more than estates, bequests, and charitable contributions - they are the tradition and philanthropic spirit which will be carried on for generations to come. THE CARSTARPHEN FAMILY When Bill Carstarphen joined the Board of the Community Foundation, he followed in the footsteps of his father, J. M. “Bip” Carstarphen, mother, Catherine Ann Pharr Carstarphen and his grandmother, Mrs. William James Pharr. Mrs. Pharr participated as a benefactor of the Foundation in the early 1990’s. “Bip” Carstarphen served on the Board of the Foundation and he was also named the 2009 Allen H. Sims recipient, along with his wife, Catherine Ann. Bill has continued the family’s involvement through the Foundation by participating as a fund holder and Secretary/Treasurer of the Board. Bill and wife, Carol, have shared their experience of generous giving with their children. Bill and Carol’s son, William Carstarphen created a fund at the Foundation during high school to assist students with college tuition. Since William’s return from college, he and wife, Brittany participate with the Foundation’s Next Generation giving circle. Bill believes, “The Foundation has been a tremendous asset for our community over the past 40 years and it has been a blessing for our family to participate and share in its great work.”

THE SADLER FAMILY In Gaston County, the Sadler Family is synonymous with education due to the commitment of Mildred Sadler and Dr. Ed Sadler in the Gaston County school system. Dr. Sadler has served on the Board of the Foundation, as well as, the Grants Committee. Inspiration from his mother, Mildred Sadler, 2015 Allen H. Sims recipient, created the drive to develop two scholar- ships at the Foundation. One scholarship, named for his mother: Mildred J. Sadler Scholarship Fund and the other, William P. and Odessa Swann Phillips Scholarship. Their concern lies with providing the opportunity of continuing education for the following generations. Dr. Sadler and his fam- ily believe: “that one of the safest routes to success is through the acquisi- tion of a college degree. It is for this reason that we have established the aforementioned scholarships in hopes that we might be able to assist with this endeavor.” l 18 l COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF GASTON COUNTY THE CARTER & BARGER FAMILIES Board member, May Barger grew up understanding the benefits of having a family fund at the Community Foundation. Her mother, Becky Carter, served as the first full-time volunteer Executive Director from 1987 to 1994, and she continued to serve on the board for several terms afterwards. In 2001, Becky Carter was honored as the recipient of the Allen H. Sims Award. In 1990, May’s father, Bynum Carter, was one of four who were the first Allen H. Sims Award recipients. He also established one of the first family funds at the Foundation in 1985 and a second fund in 1986 for his business, A.B. Carter. May has continued the legacy of support for the Community Foundation as one of the co-founders of “Run for the Money,” an event now in its 16th year which has raised more than $18 million for local non-profits. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Foundation and participates on the Grants Committee. May and her husband, Carroll, foster the legacy of giving in their children, Josie and Ben. In high school, both participated in the Foundation’s Teens Changing Gaston County Program. May explains her support this way: “In Luke 12:14 it says `to whom much is given, much will be required’ and I try to live with this in mind. Having a fund at the Community Foundation makes it so easy.”
