About the Race Team Joe Barr 200

This is a non-stop 200-mile (320 Kms) UMCA accredited endurance cycling race. The route is designed for the true all-rounder, which means you’ll be climbing, time-trialing, and general road racing in relatively equal proportions. It’s a perfect distance for those new to endurance. You can safely take on the challenge with minimal equipment and two crew members.

“The endurance journey begins with a single pedal stroke and moves forward one pedal stroke at a time” Joe Barr

About Team Joe Barr

Team Joe Barr is a World Endurance Cycling Team. We have raced at home and abroad, through many incredible landscapes, since 2009. We call ourselves The Endurance Experts because together we have overcome immense challenges and setbacks, learning mile after mile what it takes to become UMCA World Champions in the 500-mile category. Endurance is the art of constant motion. We continue to learn as we move forward. We hope you do too.

Notes for the Navigator

The route book is split into 4 columns, each with a corresponding index number for the instruction. Distances are given in miles.

Index Number - For reference only, this is to identify each different instruction. Please reference these numbers if you have a navigation query with HQ. You can also use them within your crew to highlight certain instructions. They should match the ridewithgps index numbers.

Instruction – Read this very carefully then read it again. This will include the direction of turn, roundabout exits, Timing Station (TS) etc, followed by the road name/signage instructions. Play close attention to CAUTION warnings as they are there for your safety

Last – The distance in miles from your last direction index. Do not use this to navigate the whole race. Use only as a reference. Play close attention to entries with low values 0-0.3 as this will indicate immediate following turns which can be easily missed.

Total – The total distance in miles from the race start to the Instruction you are looking at. Use this to navigate utilising the distance from start on your GPS (Bike, in car navigation) and cross - reference using the follow car’s distance/trip. Trip all devices at the start of the race. DO NOT TURN UNLESS INSTRUCTED BY THE ROUTEBOOK. IF YOU MAKE A NAVIGATION ERROR RETURN TO THE POINT WHERE THE ERROR WAS MADE AND CONTINUE ON DESIGNATED COURSE ONLY. DO NOT FOLLOW GPS RECALCULATIONS

NAVIGATION TIPS

 Don’t panic! If you make a mistake a clear head will put you back on the right path quicker.  Forward plan. Get an understanding of the route prior to the race. Reference the routebook with your GPS devices. Make sure all your devices have the latest updates, charging cables the correct maps and route files installed. Plan your stops and bike changes in advance. The rider should have an overall idea of the course. Cross-reference the route on the riders GPS vs ridewithgps to ensure proper transfer, route calculation and settings. If you have time before the race, navigating and/or riding the start and tricky sections will give you a competitive advantage. Visualise a 3d version of the route in your head.  Read all instructions and mileage values carefully, double check, especially when fatigued. Forward plan a few turns ahead & pay close attention to the next 3 turns. Not just the one you are approaching.  Cross-reference the routebook with all your devices and trips. Don’t rely on only one method of navigation. Each device may behave differently. The routebook is the standard. Routebooks can have errors, as we are human. Report any issues referencing the Index No. immediately to ensure a fair race for everyone.  Offline Navigation Internet and phone signal will not be available for portions of the race (and most other races). Devices which rely on online data may stop functioning properly (Iphone apps/RidewithGPS) Your routebook and GPS devices with installed maps are offline solutions and will keep you right. RidewithGPS.com gives an offline option when loading our route. Be sure to install these  Power Ensure all your units and additional equipment have the correct cabling and adapters to use in car power outlets. A correctly powered inverter is an essential piece of kit. DO NOT try to charge your GPS devices from the laptop or built in in car usb ports as this may cause them to lock into an unusable (but charging) state. If you need to charge a device use a power outlet adapter with USB, or the USB ports on the inverter(with adapter). This will power your unit without it thinking it’s connected to a computer and give you full function. This is vital for my next tip.  Double GPS unit HOT SWAP LIFE HACK! Have the luxury of owning two of the same model of GPS cycling computer? Make sure the two units are updated, have the same maps, routes installed, correct settings and are fully charged before a race. Have your rider use one unit (unit 1) and start and navigate (unit 2) in the car and keep it charged. You will have a navigation unit that will work offline and show you the route properly without recalculation (if your settings are correct) and your position. It will also give you the same view as the rider and give you the chance to see errors before they send your rider off course. When your rider’s (unit 1) power is nearly depleted, give them the fully charged and running (unit 2) and charge their unit (unit 1) in the car. When (unit 2) depletes, swap a fully charged (unit 1) in its place and charge and navigate (unit 2) in the car. Rinse, lather, repeat!  Nutrition Eat plenty, eat often and eat right! Yes, coming from the overweight man who ate a box of tic tacs for breakfast during Race Across America. I am so much better since Jillian joined the team full-time! Staying hydrated is equally important. I particularly enjoy Joe’s Trifuel supply to take me through those long nights. Do not rely on Redbull and sugary drinks to carry you through. Once you start crashing and flapping about you run the risk of missing a vital instruction.  Weather Be prepared for the weather, monitor the weather using the Met Office/Accuweather apps. Let your rider and team make decisions on that information  Give Orders That’s right, you are the navigator. The team and rider should be able to rely on you. Cross-reference with them as they may have local knowledge or a different understanding of an instruction. If you and the crew are 100% sure the rider is wrong, then correct them usually followed by the words “Trust me”. Your rider is facing fatigue and wind noise. When speaking with the rider give your orders CLEAR, LOUD, AS AN ORDER, WITH PAUSES.  Take over driving in sections that are easier to navigate. Reducing driver fatigue is essential. Swap often with your driver, if using the double GPS hack you can still follow it when driving. Teaching the crew how to navigate will make this easier. Don’t forget to rest yourself.  Have fun You are also in charge of keeping spirits high for crew and rider. Tell bad jokes. DJ. Impersonate the opposite sex on the side of the road when your rider passes (highly recommended). Be safe, have fun. Ian – Navigator – Crossdresser – Team Joe Barr Map Overview
