Geological Society of America Special Paper221 1988 ABSTRACf The San Juan Islands expose a thick and regionally extensive sequence of Late Cretaceous thrust faults and nappes, referred to as the San Juan thrust system. This thrust system, which straddles the southeastern edge of the Wrangellia terrane of Van­ couver Island, contains important information on the accretionary history of Wrangellia and other, related, far-traveled terranes. Nappes of the thrust system contain a diverse group of rocks ranging from early Paleozoic to middle Cretaceous in age. Based on contrasts in stratigraphy, metamorphism, and geochemistry, we identify five terranes within, and peripheral to, the thrust system. These terranes were widely separated from each other, and also from Wrangellia, until the Late Jurassic: (1) the Haro terrane, an Upper Triassic arc-volcanic sequence; (2) the Turtleback terrane, a Paleozoic arc­ plutonic and volcanic unit; (3) the Deadman Bay terrane, a Permian to Lower Jurassic oceanic-island sequence containing Tethyan-fusulinid timestones; (4) the Garrison ter­ rane, a Permo-Triassic, high-pressure metamorphic unit; and (5) the Decatur terrane, a Middle to Upper Jurassic ophiolite and superimposed arc-volcanic sequence. Thick Jura-Cretaceous clastic units are linked to these older San Juan terranes and to Wran­ gellia, either as directly overlapping units or by the presence of clastic material derived from the terranes. The voluminous amount of clastic material in these Jura-Cretaceous units requires a large, subaerially exposed source region. We infer that this source region was a continent-like landmass, presumably part of continental America (North or Central?). Late Cretaceous thrusting juxtaposed these older terranes and disrupted the Jura­ Cretaceous clastic units. Very low-temperature high-pressure metamorphic assem­ blages, including lawsonite and aragonite, were developed during this event, and formed as a direct result of thrust-related burial to depths of about 20 km. Stratigraphic evi­ dence indicates that structural burial, metamorphism, and subsequent uplift back to the surface all occurred during a very short time interval, between 100 and 84 Ma, with average vertical transport rates of about 2 km/m.y. The Upper Cretaceous Nanaimo Group, a syn-orogenic basin to the north of the San Juan system, contains cobbles of metamorphosed rocks from the San Juan nappes, and therefore records the erosional unroofing of the thrust system. We envision the San Juan system to be a short-lived collision-like orogen, rather than a long-lived subduction complex. This conclusion is based primarily on the diver­ sity of rock units involved and the punctuated nature of the deformation. What remains unclear is the cause of this orogenic deformation. Early Eocene climates were globally warm, with ice-free conditions at both poles. Early 16 Eocene polar landmasses supported extensive forest ecosystems of a primarily temperate biota, 17 but also with abundant thermophilic elements such as crocodilians, and mesothermic taxodioid 18 conifers and angiosperms. The globally warm early Eocene was punctuated by geologically brief 19 hyperthermals such as the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), culminating in the 20 Early Eocene Climatic Optimum (EECO), during which the range of thermophilic plants such as 21 palms extended into the Arctic. Climate models have struggled to reproduce early Eocene Arctic 22 warm winters and high precipitation, with models invoking a variety of mechanisms, from 23 atmospheric CO2 levels that are unsupported by proxy evidence, to the role of an enhanced 24 hydrological cycle to reproduce winters that experienced no direct solar energy input yet remained 25 wet and above freezing.

The buccinid Zaglenum new genus is represented by two new species and the turbinellid Fimbrivasum new genus is represented by three new species. The nododelphinulid Trochacanthus pacificus new species is the first record of this genus in the Western Hemisphere, and the procerthiid Nudivagusl califus new species could be the first record of this genus on the Pacific slope of North America. The xenophorid Xenophora (Endoptygma) hermax new species is only the second known Cretaceous species of this genus on the Pacific slope of North America, and this species establishes that Endoptygma Gabb, 1877, is a valid taxon. The neritid Otostoma sharonae new species is only the fourth known Cretaceous species of this genus on the Pacific slope of North America. The ringiculid Ringicula? (Ringiculopsis?) hesperiae new species is the first Campanian record of this genus on the Pacific slope of North America and the first recognition of this subgenus in this area.

The Cretaceous record of the nuculid bivalve Acila (Truncacila) Grant & Gale, 1931, is established for the first time in the region extending from the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, southward to Baja California, Mexico. Its record is represented by three previously named species, three new species, and one possible new species. The previously named species are reviewed and refined. The cumulative geologic range of all these species is Early Cretaceous (late Aptian) to Late Cretaceous (early late Maastrichtian), with the highest diversity (four species) occurring in the latest Campanian to early Maastrichtian. Acila (T.) allisoni, sp. nov., known only from upper Aptian strata of northern Baja California, Mexico, is one of the earliest confirmed records of this subgenus. ‘‘Aptian’’ reports of Trun- cacila in Tunisia, Morocco, and possibly eastern Venzeula need confirmation. Specimens of the study area Acila are most abundant in sandy, shallow-marine deposits that accumulated under warm- water conditions. Possible deeper water occurrences need critical evaluation. Braje * and Matthew Lauer Department of Anthropology, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA 92182, USA; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 27 June 2020; Accepted: 7 August 2020; Published: 11 August 2020 Abstract: As the number of academic manuscripts explicitly referencing the Anthropocene increases, a theme that seems to tie them all together is the general lack of continuity on how we should define the Anthropocene. In an attempt to formalize the concept, the Anthropocene Working Group (AWG) is working to identify, in the stratigraphic record, a Global Stratigraphic Section and Point (GSSP) or golden spike for a mid-twentieth century Anthropocene starting point. Rather than clarifying our understanding of the Anthropocene, we argue that the AWG’s effort to provide an authoritative definition undermines the original intent of the concept, as a call-to-arms for future sustainable management of local, regional, and global environments, and weakens the concept’s capacity to fundamentally reconfigure the established boundaries between the social and natural sciences. To sustain the creative and productive power of the Anthropocene concept, we argue that it is best understood as a “boundary object,” where it can be adaptable enough to incorporate multiple viewpoints, but robust enough to be meaningful within different disciplines. Here, we provide two examples from our work on the deep history of anthropogenic seascapes, which demonstrate the power of the Anthropocene to stimulate new thinking about the entanglement of humans and non-humans, and for building interdisciplinary solutions to modern environmental issues.

Most of these finds were made in Alberta and British Columbia, but the Yukon Territory can lay claim to at least one tracksite and probably has the potential to yield more sites. The record of dinosaur tracks with skin impressions has increased dramatically, and is now represented by specimens of ankylosaurs, large ornithopods, small theropods and tyrannosauroids. Notable new finds include the first record of sauropods in Canada, evidence of herding behavior in ankylosaurs and the first pterosaur tracks in Canada. First discoveries of track specimens from several formations in western Canada include the Mountain Park Member of the Gates Formation in Alberta, and the Boulder Creek, Goodrich, Kaskapau, Cardium and Marshybank formations in northeastern British Columbia.

Detailed observations at the scale of facies and stratigraphic architecture provide criteria for recognition and interpretation of long-lived slope channel systems, emphasizing a disparate relationship between stratigraphic and geomorphic surfaces. The composite submarine channel system deposit documented is 19.5 km wide and 1500 m thick, which formed and filled over ~15 Ma.
