The FRONTIER NEWS is published quarterly and dedicated to ex-employees, friends, family and fans of the “old” Frontier Airlines which “died” on August 24, 1986 and was “buried” on May 31, 1990. It is a non-profit operation. All income goes into keeping the NEWS going. Opinions expressed in this newsletter are those of the author and not the editor or the publication. Publishing dates are October for Fall, January for Winter, April for Spring and July for Summer. Articles and photos are welcomed and subject to editing and space requirements. We cannot pay for such items but will give credit as appropriate. All submissions should deal with the “old” Frontier Airlines. Especially welcomed are stories of personal experiences with a humorous slant. Many thanks to BIS station agent Ken Wolbaum for All airline employees have a treasure trove of such sending a box of FL memorablia which included a lot of stories. You can see all of them, over 1500 pages total, at http://FAL-1.tripod.com/FL_News.html Anyway, Phil was constantly encouraging and complimenting my efforts. He was alway giving me money to take care of expenses and was a great booster of our enterprise. By the Aug 2017 reunion Phil’s fight with cancer was taking it’s toll and he asked me to move the reunion back to FYV. Then last year in Aug he was unable to attend. Published by the Master Executive Council for the information of the ALEA membership on Frontier Airlines. JULY/AUGUST 1982 IN MEMORIAM James D. Booth, RNOOO, June 12 in Dallas from cancer. Jim was 36, a station agent and senior station agent since 1974 in AIA, HOT, JAC, DEN and RNO. Stephen N. Sallee, DENRK, June 14 in Denver from an accident at his home. Mike was 26 and had been a reservation agent since 1977. Frank E. Bazadier, MCIOO, July 13 in Kansas City from a heart attack. Frank was 67 and a porter from 1967 until his retirement last January 15. Our condolences to their families and friends. SHORTHOPS June Wood, DENJJ, 15—year rotable inventory controller, retired March 5. She was #5 on K group seniority. Earlene Boilers, DENAR, 17—year lead accounting clerk, retired July 1. She was #5 on L group seniority. Martin Bunjes, DENID, 12—year mail clerk, retired June 4. He was #19 on K group seniority. Best wishes to them. Ken McIntosh, former Council #45 Chairman and 14—year CPR station agent, has resigned from the company to go into private business. Any gun and/or safety incidents should be reported to Walt Hatfield, PHXOO, with copies to Eddie Mondt, MCIOO, Quent David at ALEA HQs, and me. Accounting asked that the word be passed to the field that it helps their job enormously if all ticket and miscellaneous coupons are attached together face up and facing the same way. Any items, articles, input, etc., you feel deserve a place in the Newsletter are appreciated. Just drop me a note with the info and I’ll use it if I can. Births, retirements, airline parties, deaths, and awards are a few possibilities. Keep in mind the Newsletter is bi—monthly and requires at least a month lead to timely items. RUMORS The most persistent and widespread rumor I’ve encountered lately is the one where I’ve gone “completely ALEA,” working in Chic-ago, no longer going to be Master Chairman, etc. One part is true — I am “completely ALEA” though not in the context of the rumor. The rest is untrue. I’m still a station agent based in SAN. The duties of Master Chairman make it impossible to work a station shift and still do an adequate job for you. Therefore, I’m on payloss most of the time and do not cover a shift at SAN but devote full time to being Master Chairman. I have no desire to work in another ALEA position. Home #1 is still outside FYV. Home #2 is SAN. Home away from home is the Ramada Inn on Smith Road in DEN. Home #3 is a FL B737. RETIREMENT AND PENSIONS The Retirement Board which was established under the new Agreement met for the first time June 29. ALEA was represented by Board Members Gary Mueller, STLTT, Charles Wilson, DENOO, and me. The company representatives were John Blue, Cal Wolfe and Don Hatfield. John Blue gave us a detailed sunnnary of how and where the ALEA pension funds are invested. We have $13,000,000 in assets invested in various bond and real estate markets. Average yield is 101/2—11%. In 1982 the company will put an additional $1,500,000—$2,000,000 into the fund which is kept fully vested. FL does not borrow money from our pension fund. It is administered by Central Bank of Denver. Approximately 27 retired ALEA members currently draw a pension. The company now furnishes us with a monthly recap of pension payments and other related information that we did not receive before establishment of the Retirement Board. The annual pension statements will be out in August. Retain your statements; they are important documents. Your 1981 accrual was 1.6% of your gross earnings. For instance, if you made $20,000 total in 1981, your accrual was $20,000 x 1.6% equaling $320 which divided by 12 means you accrued $26.67 per month toward your pension. At that rate, in 10 years you would have $266.67 pension accrued. As you make more money, more goes into the pension. Additionally, this year the rate increases to 1.75%. Verify your figures when the statement arrives. MASTER EXECUTIVE COUNCIL The MEC will meet in DEN August 24-25. The agenda includes election of the 1983 Negotiating Committee. Any members interested should already be campaigning. The surveys will be out in the fall. SYSTEM BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT The Four-Man Board will meet August 9-13. ALEA representatives will be Board Chairman Ed Hatfield, OMAOO, and Barb Wood, DENTT, Council #73 Vice Chairman. About 22 cases are scheduled, including two terminations. The Three-Man Board will meet August 31 for three days. Five cases are planned which will clear all pending arbitration cases. Ed Hatfield will represent ALEA and A. Langley Coffee will be the arbitrator. STATION VISITS Since the first of the year, I have visited 24 stations, including LAX, MCI, STL, JLN, LAS, FSM, OAK, SMF, ATL, GJT, SEA, FAR, CPR, SAN, DEN, SLC, HOU, LEX, ICT, FAT, LBF and DRO. As my schedule permits, I’ll continue the visits. They give me an opportunity to meet you and get your input. They give you a chance to get some answers to questions and know who is representing you. We both benefit.
