Harvest Festival was invented in 1843 by a radi- cal Cornish vicar. Traditionally harvest celebrations were regard as both dangerous and pagan by the churches. But this Cornish vicar was determined to make the church take seri- ously the lives of the people – which in his context meant poor rural labourers. So he made a loaf from the first corn and offered it in church in thanksgiving for human labour. Harvest today challenges us to make similarly radical connections. ● Pray for all those being ordained Deacon today, for their families and for the parishes where they will serve. ● Diocese of Southern Ohio (Province V, The Episcopal Church).
