The varsity eight and varsity four each took the bronze, illustrating Brown’s depth and team approach. The combination was enough to give the Bears 67 points, well ahead of the rest of the field.

At the 2007 NCAA Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., all three of Bruno’s crews made it into the grand finals and captured their fifth NCAA Championship in 10 years. After the season, Murphy guided the crew to a semifinal appearance at the in London, England. To top off the successful 2007 season, Murphy also had one student athlete named to the First Team of the District I ESPN Brown’s 1996 Champs The Magazine Academic All-America team.

Seven-Time NCAA Champions -- 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2011 20 BROWN UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S CREW PROGRAM HISTORY (1974-99) • Brown women’s crew was established in 1974 under the direction of its first head coach, Peter Amram ’61, a Brown graduate who had rowed with the men’s varsity crew as an undergraduate. • Brown was victorious in its first intercollegiate meet, defeating Assumption College, Clark University, and Holy Cross on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., on May 4, 1974. • Two Brown rowers, Betts Howes ’77 and Kathryn Reight ’78, earned gold medals at the U.S. National Women’s Rowing Championships in Long Beach, Calif., on June 20, 1976. Both women rowed in the open four and open eight races for the College Boat Club of the University of Pennsylvania. • Gavin Viano was named head coach of women’s crew in 1979, following Amram’s decision to leave the team to pur- sue other interests. • Brown women’s lightweight fours finished first at the Eastern Sprints on May 11, 1980, marking their first ever Sprints title. The lightweight fours went on to finish third in the College Nationals and sixth in the Open Nationals at the 1980 NWRA Women’s Collegiate & National Rowing Championships held from June 18-22, 1980. • In 1983, the second novice boat became the first Brown women’s shell ever to qualify for the grand finals at the East- ern Sprints. • Four Brown rowers, Ginny Golder ’84, Tina Hartest ’85, Anne So- bieski ’85, and Alexa Lambert ’85, competed in the National Cham- pionships held at Madison, Wisconsin on June 4-5, 1983. • John Murphy became the women’s crew’s third head coach in 1984, coming to Brown after coaching stints at Cal Berkeley and the University of Washington. • The varsity eight captured the Women’s Eastern Sprints Champion- ship for the first time in Brown history in 1988. • Brown women’s crew won its first team title at the Eastern Sprints on May 13, 1990, as the second varsity and first novice boats earned gold medals, the varsity fours took home silver, and the varsity eight and second novice boats won bronze medals. • The Bears’ varsity eight won the first women’s race ever held at the Brown’s 1988 Eastern Sprints Champions Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships on June 5, 1993. • The Bears repeated as IRA Champions in the second annual women’s IRA Championship held on June 4, 1994. The women’s crew had earlier finished second only to eventual national champion Princeton at the Eastern Sprints. • Brown’s varsity eight decisively defeated two-time defending national champion Princeton during the 1996 regular season and went on to win the 1996 Eastern Sprints, the IRAs, and the Collegiate National Championship, becoming the first women’s crew to capture the “Triple Crown” of collegiate rowing. • Brown’s varsity four won the first NCAA Championship, narrowly de- feating the University of Washington on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cor- dova, Calif., on June 1, 1997. As a team, Brown finished third overall. • In 1998, Brown placed second at the NCAA Championship, and won the Eastern Sprint and Ivy Championship. The crew went on to Henley Brown’s 1994 IRA Champions and captured the open eight and club eight titles. • Coach John Murphy’s crew captured the first NCAA Division I Championship in Brown University history after defeating the University of Virginia by a three-second margin at the 1999 NCAA Championship at Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The Bears’ varsity also captured the Eastern Sprint Championship and the Ivy Championship while setting a new course record. Brown’s freshmen and varsity four also won at the Sprints, completing an undefeat- ed season. 21 Seven-Time NCAA Champions -- 1999, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2011 BROWN UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S CREW PROGRAM HISTORY (2000-16) • Murphy’s crew repeated as NCAA Champions, edging the University of Washington by 3.9 seconds to capture its second NCAA title in as many years in 2000. Brown defeated Washington by four points to earn the title. Addition- ally, the Bears’ varsity and second varsity also captured the Eastern Sprint Championship and Ivy Championship, as both eights finished undefeated seasons. • The Bears captured their fourth straight Eastern Championship in 2001 after posting an 11-1 regular season record. At the NCAA Championships, Brown placed third despite losing five members of the varsity eight boat from the pre- vious season. • Brown won its third national title in four years at the 2002 NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., after going undefeated during the regular season. The Bears placed first in the varsity four grand finals and second in both the varsity and second varsity eight grand finals, defeating defending champion Washington by four points in the final standings. Brown was the only school to qualify all of its crew for the grand finals. • In 2003, Brown claimed second place at the NCAAs with strong performances by the varsity four and second varsity eight. Both crews earned first place, allowing the Bears to finish just two points behind Radcliffe in the overall stand- ings, despite the varsity eight placing seventh overall. • Brown captured its fourth national title in six years at the 2004 NCAA Championhsips in Sacramento, Calif. The Bears won both varsity eight races while the varsity four placed third. With the win, the Bears became the winningest program in NCAA Championship history. The team also won the Eastern Sprints Team Title, recording first place victories in five of seven races. • Brown women’s crew assistant coach Phoebe Murphy was named the National Assistant Coach of the Year by CRCA. She was previously named the 2005 New England Region Assistant Coach of the Year after helping the Bears to a third-place finish at the 2005 NCAA Championship. • The Collegiate Rowing Association (CRCA) announced its All-America teams for the 2006 season, which included Brown seniors Deborah Dryer and Gillian Almy, both First Team selections, in addition to junior Rachel Dearborn, a Second Team honoree. The three were all part of Brown’s varsity eight, which placed third at the NCAA Champion- ships and second at Eastern Sprints. • In 2007, Brown claimed its fifth NCAA championship on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., with a com- bined 58 points. The Bears placed second at the EAWRC Sprints, behind the , who eventually went on to win the varsity eight race at the NCAA Champion- ships. The crew went on to compete at Henley, claiming the Sports Council Cup after taking first place at the 2007 Henley Women’s Regatta. • In 2008, the Bears took a record sixth championship at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. Brown used excel- lence across the board to win the title, taking first in the second varsity eight and third in both the first eight and Brown’s 2011 NCAA Champions the varsity four to amass 67 points, easily holding off second-place Washington, which had 59. • Brown continued its amazing run of top-five finishes, placing fifth overall in the team standings in 2009. The Bears were just 14 points from being on the podium, and only 17 away from first place in an extraordinarily competitive field. Brown was led by the second varsity eight, which placed fourth overall. The varsity eight took fifth, while the four took second in the petite finals, good for eighth overall. • In 2011, Brown secured its seventh national title by the slimest of margins, as the Bears ended in an 85-point tie with Stanford for the team championship. Bruno’s performance in the varsity eight race made the difference however, as Brown finished ahead of the Cardinal by .05 seconds to claim its third title in five years. • After placing 14th in 2012 and seventh in 2013, Brown came in third place at the NCAA Championships in both 2014 and 2015.
