Introduction

The history of the Zaehnsdorf Company up to 1947 has been covered by Frank Broomhead in his books, The Zoehnsdorfs (1842–1947), Craft Bookbinders that was published in 1986 by the Private Libraries Association. The year 1947 was chosen as the end date for this book as that is the date that the company passed out of the hands of the family. The company became Zaehnsdorf Limited in 1957. In 1998 the firms of Sangorski & Sutcliffe and Zaehnsdorf joined forces and became the SSZ Ltd. Company. These companies along with Falkiners Fine Papers were purchased by Shepherds which continues the tradition of fine binding to this day. Five years ago, Shepherds sold the remnants of Zaehnsdorf’s own collection of books to a dealer in England who kindly sold them to me earlier this year.

In this collection you will find many books bound by the Zaehnsdorf Company for their own use. In some cases, titles are present in more than one copy. A number of the books contain presentations to various Zaehnsdorf family members. Some are interleaved with notes in pen; some are unique to the company such as the 20th century wage book, the bound volume of letters to the company and the sample book showing their skills at illumination. You will also find numerous books on design and . Each book has a commemorative loosely inserted stating that it is from the Zaehnsdorf reference collection.
