Labor Government Getting on with the Job of Upgrading Elsternwick Park Thursday, 17 March, 2016 LABOR GOVERNMENT GETTING ON WITH THE JOB OF UPGRADING ELSTERNWICK PARK The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with the job of upgrading the home of Australia’s largest amateur football league, the Victorian Amateur Football Association. Minister for Sport John Eren today announced a $3 million funding package to transform Elsternwick Park into a state-of-the-art football hub the whole community can enjoy. The project will create new change rooms for players, including dedicated women’s rooms, as well as umpires’ facilities. It includes a canteen, public toilets, and ground resurfacing works. The upgrade will create administration offices the growing league needs, and become the home base for the VAFA’s women’s competition that will begin in 2017. Women are joining grassroots footy in record numbers. VAFA clubs Melbourne University and La Trobe University already have women’s teams, and 70 Monash University Students have already flagged their interest in joining a side. The VAFA is planning a women’s match curtain raiser at all senior matches during a round in May. Elsternwick Park will remain the home of the VAFA Umpires Association, but with better facilities for aspiring whistle-blowers to learn their trade. The Labor Government’s investment will create a Women’s Umpiring Academy, for aspiring female umpires to launch their career. Mr Eren also announced the flagship venue would become home to the Old Melburnians Football Club, who have made way from Junction Oval so that construction of the $25 million Victorian Cricket and Community Centre can begin. The Old Melburnians are arriving at Elsternwick Park at the perfect time, as the club begins its first A Grade campaign in five years. Victoria is the home of Australian Rules and the sporting capital of the world, and the Labor Government wants it to remain that way. The Government’s $100 million Community Sports Infrastructure Fund is helping grassroots clubs all over Victoria update tired grounds and build the facilities they need. The project is being delivered in partnership with the Bayside City Council, the VAFA, the AFL, AFL Victoria and the Old Melburnians Football Club. Quotes attributable to Minister for Sport John Eren “Women are joining footy in record numbers. The VAFA is embarking on a women’s competition, and we’re giving players the base they deserve.” “Umpires are an integral part of the game. The VAFA Women’s Umpiring Academy will encourage more young women to pick up the whistle and embark on an umpiring career.” Quotes attributable to Member for Southern Metropolitan Region Philip Dalidakis “At a time when the health risk of obesity is growing, investing in public sporting facilities for our local community has never been more important.” Media Contact: Patrick Lane 0437 884 010 | [email protected] .

To use another overblown metaphor, clubs are also the essential fabric out of which the rich, variegated tapestry of the game’s history has been woven.

Playing For ‘The Big V’ ld Brighton Grammarians Football Club has been well represented at State amateur level. Most of our VAFA representatives have donned the OBig V in comparatively recent times. For the first twenty years after Nick Walsh led the reformation of OBGFC in 1957, the opportunity for our players to represent the Association was limited. Selection for the Victorian Amateurs was largely a privilege offered to the best players in A and B sections. Comparatively few players competing below that level were afforded an opportunity. There were some notable exceptions! Imagine the pride-swelling OBG hearts, when in 1978 both John Priestley and David Shepherd were selected to play against Tasmania. Very few C Grade players were given such recognition. David thinks that John might have kicked five goals and he is pretty sure that at least a couple resulted from passes delivered ‘lace-up’ in the manner to which John was accustomed! In 1981, having just been promoted to B Grade for the first time in our history, the Tonners again saw brilliant full-forward John Priestley selected in the square for the VAFA. Giant ruck- man Tony Gedye and rover Gary Jones were also selected against South Australia and Western Australia. John, who is Old Brighton’s most prolific goal-kicker, booted ten goals against the Sandgropers in the VAFA’s smashing win. Tony thoroughly enjoyed his VAFA Rep. games, yet although he well remembers Priestley’s goal feast, other memories are blurred. He attributes that partial loss of focus to Ross Perrett, University Blacks champion rover, who was Tony’s room- mate in Adelaide! Tony reminds us that Steve Dobbie, a fourth Old Brighton Grammarian, was also in the side representing University Blues.

Playing The club, although not as successful on the field this season with only the 3rd XI making the finals, were still competitive in all XIs. The loss of three keys players during the season from the 1st XI, Will Long due to work commitments, Andrew McGorian due to injury and Riz Chhabra, had a ripple effect through all sides. Cam Christensen did an excellent job as coach of the club and was ably assisted by Mark Quinn and John Watkin. It was great to have Mark and John at the club as they are great role models for the younger players. The second half of the season saw Ben Cavey appointed to assist Cam. Ben fitted into the role very well and was a great asset to the coaching panel.

  • HISTORIC FOOTBALL PHOTOGRAPHS IDENTIFIED: The
HISTORIC FOOTBALL PHOTOGRAPHS IDENTIFIED The Charles Boyles Collection – State Library of Victoria Research by Ken Mansell. May 2010. --------------------------------------------------- CONTENTS Introduction. A Note on Identification. A Note on Competitions. The Boyles Collection Identified. Select Bibliography. Identifications. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION Not quite two years ago, the State Library of Victoria received a donation of hundreds of glass plate negatives that had belonged to the photographer Charles Edward Boyles ( 1888-1971). For a period of over thirty years, through the depression and war years and into the early sixties, Boyles devoted himself to capturing on film the social life of ordinary Victorians. His main preoccupation however was sport, and in particular Australian Rules Football. Boyles became the ‘unofficial official’ photographer of VFL and VFA clubs, taking hundreds of photographs of teams assembled on the benches before matches. His work was not restricted to the elite competitions and he ventured into the suburbs and the countryside to record football life in its entirety. In 2008 his son Harley Boyles retrieved the historic glass plate collection from his back shed when moving house and donated to the State Library. The State Library had already commenced a two-year project to digitise its enormous collection of 40,000 glass plate negatives.1 It has made the Boyles collection available to the public as a digitised online resource. The 225 high- quality digital images of footballers can be downloaded without charge as high resolution files by anyone. We are blessed that most of the images are delightfully clear. A small percentage are blurry, out of focus, or fading. A significant number of the glass plates have some level of emulsion damage – obscuring faces in a few cases – but this does not detract from their historical value and only makes us all the more grateful the glass plates survived at all.
