Walker, Clinton LumberKing: 18-year-old right-hander became the first 1 st -round draft pick to make his first professional start for the LumberKings since right-hander (Texas Rangers’ 1 st rounder in ’07) when he started on 5/5 at Peoria and allowed four runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out five over 4.0 innings in a loss. Seattle’s 1 st -round pick (43 rd overall) in 2010 out of Yucaipa High School (CA), Walker went 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA in four relief outings in the AZL last year but had not started until Thursday night…he’s rated the #4 prospect in the system by Baseball America . Beavan is still the last 1 st -rounder to win his debut as a LumberKing…he did it on 4/29/08 vs. Great Lakes at Alliant Energy Field (6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 K)…Beavan would go on to a 10-6 record, 2.37 ERA in 23 starts that year. He’s now with the triple-A Tacoma Rainiers and is 1-0 with a 4.98 ERA in six starts.

Snowman is Quality Again: Even though he fell to 1-3 on the season, right-hander Forrest Snow delivered his team-leading third quality start on Wednesday in Peoria…he yielded three runs on nine hits over 7.0 frames, walked none and struck out six. The former Clinton closer is 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA over his last two starts, each 7.0-inning efforts…he earned his first pro win with his first career complete game on 4/29 at Wisconsin, limiting the Rattlers to a run on five hits while striking out seven in a 6-1 victory. His other quality start came in Beloit on 4/12 when he tossed 6.0 no-hit innings in a no-decision (1-0 loss).

Against the Bees / Oakland Affiliates: Maurer faces the Bees for the second time this season tongiht…he gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits and struck out six over 4.0 innings in a start against them on 4/10 and did not factor in the decision…the LumberKings fell, 4-3 in 10 innings. His only other outing against an ’ affiliate came in Game 2 of last year’s MWL West Division Championship Series against then-A’s affiliated Kane County (9/12/10)…he tossed 1.1 scoreless, hitless innings to help force a decisive Game 3.

Lone Win in Relief: Maurer’s lone win this season came in his only relief outing to date, 4/16 vs. Kane County. He relieved right-hander Fray Martinez and came on with a 4-0 deficit, then limited the Cougars to just a hit while striking out four over the final 3.0 innings. Maurer received benefit of the win as the LumberKings scored six runs in the fifth inning to win, 6-4.

About 2010: The right-hander returned from a lengthy stint on the disabled list (right shoulder tendonitis) on 8/13/10, joining the AZL Mariners and going 0-1 with a 1.64 ERA in four games, all starts. He was promoted to Clinton, where he went 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA in two relief appearances…Maurer walked none and struck out six over 4.1 innings. He then appeared four times in the playoffs for the Kings, going 0-1, 10.80.

Maurer Down Under: Maurer spent his winter playing for the Adelaide Bite of the Australian Baseball League alongside former LumberKings’ catcher Brandon Bantz . In nine starts for the Bite, he went 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA, 12 walks and 51 strikeouts in 48.0 innings. 23-year-old left-hander James Paxton (0-1, 4.50) makes his second start and appearance for the LumberKings in game two of this series with Burlington tomorrow afternoon. Paxton, Seattle’s 4 th -round pick in 2010 out of independent ball (pitched for the University of Kentucky from 2007-2009, then passed on supplemental 1 st -round selection by Toronto in ’09) made his long-awaited professional debut for the LumberKings on 4/27 vs. Peoria and took the loss despite making a quality start…he allowed three run on five hits including a two-run HR by Greg Rohan, walked four and struck out six over 6.0 innings in Clinton’s 7-2 loss to the Chiefs. Paxton then missed his second start. Tomorrow will be his first time facing both the Bees and an Oakland Athletics affiliate.
