Calming. Accessible. Exceedingly pastoral. Words used by friends and colleagues to describe Bishop Ralph Taylor Alton. Warm and caring. A gentle teacher. A Christian who loved the i \i Church. Ralph Alton, former Bishop of the Indiana Area, passed away Wednesday evening, Sept. 17 in Wisconsin. He was 86. Born in , Alton was the son of a Methodist minister. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University and was ordained deacon in 1928. He men attended Boston University School of Theology and was ordained an elder in 1932. Serving churches in the Northeast Ohio Annual Conference, he began pastoring churches in Wisconsin in 1950.

He led the first party to visit UM universities in mainland China when the Communist government would finally allow westerners to enter the country.
