Songwriters and producers from Stockholm have buttressed the careers of Lady Gaga, Madonna, Usher, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, Pitbull, Taylor Swift, One Direction, Maroon 5, Kelly Clarkson, and any number of other artists you’ve probably listened to while dancing, shopping, making out, or waiting on hold over the past decade. (And it’s not just American pop music that has Scandinavian fingerprints all over it: When Azerbaijan won the Eurovision contest in a 2011 upset, they did it with a song written for them by two Swedes.) If Americans are aware of this phenomenon, it is probably because they’ve heard about the legendary Swedish producer and songwriter Max Martin. There are any number of ways to express Martin’s ubiquity, but here’s one: From 2010 to 2011, the pop idol Katy Perry spent an unprecedented 69 consecutive weeks in the Billboard top 10, surpassing the previous record-holder, the 1990s Swedish group Ace of Base, by four months. But the milestone was far more of a testament to Martin’s staying power than Perry’s: Not only did he help produce and write all but one of Perry’s record- breaking string of hits, but he began his career as a producer for Ace of Base.

Stockholm – A scene for creativity The Stockholm music scene. A springboard for superstars! Stockholm is a springboard for Swedish music, and artists based in Stockholm are famous in music circles the world over. In Stockholm, you can find everything from ABBA of the 70s to Robyn - and now the world famous DJ Avicii. Song-writers from Denniz Pop to Redone have filled the hit-lists with smash hits for Madonna and company for the last three decades. How can it be that such a sparsely populated country in northern Europe has taken such a prominent place on the world music scene and why, in particular - Stockholm? Music - a natural part of growing up Perhaps one of the explanations is Swedish society itself. Music is a natural part of children's lives. Aside from the fact that music is included in the school curriculum, there are also a large number of clubs and organizations - most of them non-profit - that make it possible for those who are interested in music to pursue their interests. In Sweden, there is a long and profound musical tradition with celebrated world stars such as opera singer Jenny Lind and Jussi Björling and jazz musicians such as the Esbjörn Svensson Trio and Monica Zetterlund. Swedish choirs are world-class and director Eric Ericsson with his Kammarkör (Chamber choir) is considered to be one of the best choirs in the world. By John Seabrook September 30, 2015 mong the stranger aspects of recent pop music history is how so many of the biggest hits of the A past twenty years—by the Backstreet Boys, ’NSync, and Britney Spears to Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and the Weeknd—have been co-written by a forty-four-year-old Swede. His real name is Karl Martin Sandberg, but you would know him as Max Martin, if you know of him at all, which, if he can help it, you won’t. He is music’s magic melody man, the master hooksmith responsible for twenty-one No. 1 Billboard hits—ve fewer than John Lennon, and eleven behind Paul McCartney, on the all- time list. But, while Lennon and McCartney are universally acknowledged as geniuses, few outside the music business have heard of Max Martin. Max Martin, pictured at the 2015 Grammy Awards, has written nearly two dozen No. 1 songs, for performers including Britney Spears, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift.
